Hey guys,
Im wondering if u\'s can help me out a little, im looking to find out the value of a gen 3 rx7, rough looking body work, wheels needing refurded, interior has alot of wear and the engine needs a rebuild and its been sitting stationary outside for several months.
considering perfect examples are being sold for around £5k and highly modded ones being sold for around £7k, one needing alot of work cant be worth very much

There was one which someone posted on here from the pistonheads website, was also oop north.  That needed a rebuild and was advertised for £1,500 IIRC. :)

seriously?? there was a mint one that just sold on ebay for £2150, surely one needing alot of work would be worth alot less than that

Ah but how mint was it? Did you actually go and look at it? A complete mutt can often look quite nice in photos. I agree tho, the RX7 market has gone for a sh*t.

I think another way to look at this in terms of value is think how much it\'s gonna cost you to put right and get into tip-top condition.

Rebuild: £3,500 (max)
Respray £1,500 (for same colour)
Wheel refurb: £200??

Total: £5,200 to put right.

So saying it was a pretty mint car for sale with a rebuild you could expect to pay around £7k right?? But you might go a bit higher safe in the knowledge that the work has been done to a high spec and to a standard you choose..

Sooo.. I would offer £2k maximum for this car and leave £5,000 to get it looking and running nice.

Very bad for those selling - but very good for prospective buyers such as myself.

Like most things its just a question of timing.. oh alright then.. luck.

over £7k! :2eek i wouldnt even consider that lol theres several rebuilt (by reputable companys), repainted cars going for around £5,000, one local with 330bhp, so theres no way would i pay over 7k, go through all the hassle and the risk of buying a spares or repair, then have a car that id be lucky to sell for 5k, the only reason id take on a project would be to save money, not be left out of pocket lol.

the cheapest ive been quoted is £2950 for a basic rebuild so its would be £3,000 Min and about £5,000 max i believe? (altho i could be wrong) if any of the major parts are damaged

also the interior needs replaced, its been sitting a while so risk of seized brakes, suspension, rott etc

As I said. It depends if you want a car with problems.

If the car is in good all round condition with a fresh rebuild I don\'t think £7k is an unreasonable price.

I\'d rather spend £7k for peace of mind than £5k and be a bit worried all the time about what is ngonna go wrong next.

Its a hard question you ask, but I\'d say Rob was pretty much right. You cant expect to buy a car for £7k drive it a year or 2 and not lose money. Also looked at from the other end if you had a car that needed a rebuild how much would you let it go for £500- 1000 so that someone can make a profit, or would you sell it for scrap and earn £3-4k from parts.
Its only worth what you are prepared to pay for it, or how desperate the guy is to rid.
Good luck there do seem to be plenty around at £1500 to £2k

i understand what your saying (even tho my current car has went up in price since i bought it :chat ) but i dont like the idea of spending a min of £7k (prob closer to £8k by the time u count storage, mot, tax etc) on a car that i could buy for £5k. Ive seen quite a few with blown engine for around £2k but this ones local so would make things easier, and everyone like an easy life lol reaslitically even if i bought it for £500 i wouldnt be able to make a profit on it. id prob break even (if i was lucky) but it would save me having to take a loan :D

at the end of the day its a none runner which needs a fair bit spent on it, i couldnt justify spending anything more than i could buy one for thats running with T&T.

if i cant get this one ill definetly keep looking, ive wanted a RX7 for a very long time! just never thought it would be relistic untill i was over 25

If your too cheapskate to buy a good one (which fetch £8,000+ generally imho) then you simply wont be able to afford to run it, we are not talking about a honda civic here mate but a thoroughbread sports car. Hate to be brutal but im trying to be honest.

I think the bottom line here is whatever you choose to do it aint gonna be cheap.

To buy, maintain, run and insure any car of this type costs and thats all there is to it.

The cars may be getting cheaper but they\'re also getting older and even with a rebuilt engine there are a lot of other parts that will be reaching the end of their life.

Most ppl on here will own up the RX costing more than they budgeted for.

Good luck but be carefull...

"then have a car that id be lucky to sell for 5k,"

I think if you\'re already thinking of the resale value you may be making a mistake. Whichever route you go it\'ll cost and cost again.

I\'m sure I\'m like most others and don\'t keep a tab. It costs what it costs and if I ever have have to part with it I won\'t be doing any sums because it will have been worth every last penny.

Be warned you can\'t run a rex on a shoestring, unless you park it up and use it a couple of days a month and after you start to drive it you can\'t stop.

What sort of quote have you got on insurance?

Slightly off topic, but I\'ve heard that RX7\'s aren\'t too comfortable for tall people, any truth to this? I\'m around 6\'2", won\'t be too much of a squeeze for me will it?

Hoping to get up to Jimmy\'s in Norwich at some point to have a proper look at a decent Rex, (they have a nice black Type R up there) but it\'ll save me a journey if I\'m going to be too tall for one! ;)

Cheers,

Ben

Im 6\'4" they are hopeless. Mine has a modified steering column to give me enough room, I have had ones with standard interiors but I needed a 280mm steering wheel just to fit in it. The main problem is the steering wheel just sits too low for anyone over 6 foot. Having skinny or short legs would help, I have neither :D

I\'m just 6ft and have no problem at all but I know some ppl on here have made alteration to seat runners.

Doh.. Guess I should have thought of that before I made my mind up about getting one! :Giggle

Probably worth a trek up there I suppose, its around 70 miles according to the AA road map from Suffolk, which\'ll be a nice run on my bike either way.

I was set on a Nissan S15 Silvia, until I heard a modified Rex near Cockfosters on my way to work, the burble of his exhaust gave me chills! :chat

I\'m about 6\'2", 18st, rugby player build rather then a fatty (apart from the little \'pot\' in the middle ;) Average leg / body ratio I would say.. - Not that I play rugby btw, or any sport in general, unless you can call playing the Xbox360 a \'sport\'.. :p

We\'ll see, if its not too much of a squeeze I have no objections to getting a 280mm steering wheel, had to do that with my old Mini years ago - that giant bus drivers wheel was awful! :driving

Thanks guys :Thumbs-up

I think the bottom line is when buying a Fd or any car for that fact, you tend to get what you pay for. With the occasional bargin to be had, i would tend to agree with most people that if your buying an FD and thinking of resale value then your going down the wrong route already, when i sold my FD after 2years of owning it i\'m scared of thinking how much i lost!! (not that i\'m to fussed though, best car to own i recon!)

I will openly admit that the cost of running the Fd totaly caught me off gaurd! and thats why when i come to resale my Fd i was only going to sell it to someone who i knew could maintain it (which i did!).

just my thoughts though

I think FleaBay is to blame for alot of these cheap RX7\'s! also a lot of traders are bringing in cheap FD\'s from Japan and then not spending the time to make sure they are up too spec, they just seem to be after a quick couple of quid!

I do truely believe that 99% of the time you get what you pay for, from previous experience of owning an Fd i would rather spend £7k on one and not have to keep repairing it, then £5k and keep repairing it. Mind you not to say that a £7k one won\'t go wrong.

At the end of the day i always kept myself a kitty of £1k for breakage\'s on the FD. But i suppose everyone has to learn in their own ways.

Best bet is to sit back relax and wait for a good one to come up for the right money, bearing in mind running costs/insurance/unforseable circumstances.

I waited the best part of a year waiting, buying autotrader, scouring the web and eventually got one from Japan with very very light damage on drivers door. Had no miles, no mods (one of the things i wanted in particular), really low miles and immaculate inside and out.....bar the prang. All sorted and on the road well sub 5k.

Bargains exist but I must admit I had slight panic when I noticed comment on perfect examples for 5 and high spec for 7!!! Looks like i\'ll be keepin mine another while then!!!

MMMM where are these 5k cars with engine rebuilds by reputable companys? i keep hearing about them and i\'ve not seen one yet? To me it does not make sence at all, why spend 4k on a rebuild then sell it for 5k if its a nice car?

Being an Fd owner i sure hope this isn\'t the case, i relise that Fd\'s are getting on now and the cheaper ones are falling into the Chav price range (to buy) but a few months ago when i was looking to Buy one all i saw for 5k was C**p, people selling cars that "had a rebuild" but with no proof etc.

I know the chav factor will mean there will be plenty of second hand parts but i hope FD\'s don\'t get a reputation of Being a Chav car or my Fd will be getting Old school\'d ;)

As far as i\'m aware, 3k and below is a poor example, 5k is nice car with no rebuild, 7k is Rebuilt with minor mods and above is Single turbo/Moded and Limited editions. Belive me with these cars you get what you pay for, if its a bad example it will cost more than a nice one to put right.

I went and looked at a car like this for a customer recently. It had about £2000-3000 worth of work needing doing on it to bring it up to standard, I expect just like these ones.

All of these \'dealer\' cars are cheap to buy for a reason. The reason being they are generally fresh imports that were bought cheaply in Japan due to having an accident repair.

Yup, they will soon be like the 200sx\'s and you will see endless horrific examples dying due to neglect and ignorance.

Thing is \'Dobber\' is if you use your own logic, you will end up buying a car thats completely sh1te, then once you have to spend countless thousands repairing it or just give up and scrap it, you will undoubtably tell everyone how rubbish rx7\'s are and how they cost you thousands upon thousands to repair. This is how nonsense reputations get made, through someone buying a pile of cr*p expecting it to be \'mint\' then getting upset when it costs them a fortune.

If you just want some car that you dont have to worry about pranging then move on to a 2nd gen EGI or something to get the hang of it without worrying about losing a ton of money.

Its time to bring up the old chestnut - Buy cheap, buy twice.

I think if you take the time to do your research (there’s plenty of info on this forum), you will quickly come to the conclusion that’s it’s acceptable to spend £7k on a lightly modified car in a good condition.  Now when you see highly modified cars going around £5k – it must make you wonder why.

The cars seem to have enough of a thrill factor without doing anything to them, so why bother going for a highly modified unreliable one?

Oh, and I think it’s defiantly worth investing in some professional driving tuition before driving a rex - I know I certainly will.

I get the feeling that at the moment the more standard and unmolested cars are holding their value more than anything else, probably due to people being wary of cars being thrashed.
It is evident that even if a car has had a rebuild but has not been modified and tuned correctly the engine can go pop at very low milage.
