Title: Engine Removal Tips?
Post by: Jit on July 29, 2006, 06:39:51 PM
Hi,

My "redoing the rats nest" has inadvertently turned into "rebuilding the engine"

Anyhow, so far, ive removed the battery, IC, intake elbow, Plenum, Throttle body, ACV, Alternator, Air pump, Filters and associated pipework (except the second turbo outlet pipe...the one that comes over the top of the turbos from behind), the rats nest, AC and PAS pumps. Ive also removed both rad top and bottom hoses from the engine side.

Basically what i need to know is what is the best way to disconnect the oil lines from the engine?
And if there is anything else i should disconnect?

From there on in, i see it a case of removing the downpipe, undoing the bell housing bolts, undoing the pressure plate thru the inspection covers and unbolting the engine from its mounts?

Does this sound about right?

Any help is much appreciated as always :Thumbsup!

sounds like you are doing pretty good to me.
Just disconnect the oil lines on the pipes to the oil coolers, you have to lever a little round retaining clip off then they pull apart, leave rest of the oil pipes on the block until you take it out.

Dont forget to unplug the loom from the ecu and from the gearbox and wrap the trailing ends out the way so they dont snag on removal. :)

Thats about it though I think, should have it out in no time. Got your 56mm socket ready?!

i had exactly the same problem with the top downpipe nut nearest the back of the car the other week.
u need to get the other 3 nuts of and just crank the hard to get at nut half a turn and the downpipe will drop down a little  on the studs giving u that bit more clearence to get your socket on the nut.
Have u moved the the aircon pump and power stearing up out of the way and tied it back? this gives u more room to push the engine to the right when u get it of the mounts, it helps loads to get at that b@stard of a nut your on about to!!

its not that nut thats the problem...its the lower rear one....its jammed on sooooo tight its unbelievable.....im quite a small guy as well so i cant really get enough leverage on a spanner!! A long reach 15mm spanner would be ideal...just got to find one! :)

Air Con and PAS Pumps are out of the way (tied them to the turrets)

i did the 2 bottom ones with a ring spanner and leavered them undone by jamming a 12" extension bar on the open end of the ring spanner for leaverage, one was that tight the stud come out with the nut.
All 4 of the downpipe nuts are a b@stard to get to, the top 2 you cant even see until u lift the engine up 4 or 5inches of the mounts.

Ive tried the entension bar on the ring spanner trick already...but my extension bar had a bit too much play in it and it didnt work....tommorow im gonna try doing it from underneath by kicking the ring spanner while my back is wedged up against the wall lol!

I managed the other 3 with the mounts still on..im sure it can be done...

u must have small hands bud cause I had no chance at them top nuts until i pulled the engine up of the mounts.
I couldnt even see or feel the nuts nevermind get a ratchet on them!!
