Title: disconect power steering?
Post by: travellinbob on July 26, 2006, 09:43:43 PM
Hi all, what happens when I dont connect the perw steering on my fc front end in the moggy? Will the rack be a bugger to turn? Keeping in mind that there will be now pump etc. Just a rack with the hydraulic pipes attatched to nothing.
 cheers, michael.

Recirc the pipes, lest you dry out the rack fella.

Depending on how you rely on the PAS to park will show how much you miss it, at speed the difference is insignificant, cornering you regain all the feeling in the wheel that the PAS robs but be prepared to apply additional effort to parrallel parking, especially with wide tyres.

Hi Michael, hope your well,

Please don\'t disconnect the power assistance from your rack as it is dangerous
and not designed to work this way, I have heard of FD owners abroad having racks fail because of doing this :eek

I know its money but please put safety first and fit an RX-7 EGI non power steering rack as people do with FD\'s when they go Dragin.

Right cheers for that Clive!! A goog friend of mine in oz has a turbo II rally car and said it was fine but to be honest I was dubious to say the least. I will hunt down an EGI rack as I do not want power steering.
 Cheers, michael.

Michael,
An easy and fairly cheap alternative to fitting an EGi rack is to but a 2nd hand Citroen Saxo electric power steering pump in.  You can fit it almost any where you like,  the stock turbo 2 PAS lines fit straight to it. (you just block the little thin one off.

I removed the PAS pump on my FD and fitted one of these and did the same on my turbo 2.  I put it under the wing at the front where the headlight washer bottle goes.   It is about the size of a large dog food tin with either a little remote resovoir or one built in depending on which one you get.

It only has 3 wires to fit it, Pos, Neg and switch so is really easy to instal,  at least you havent got to find a good egi rack and you will have the only moggi with PAS.

On my FD i mounted it on the side of the engine where the stock pas went by modifying the the citroen bracket.

I put a switch in the cabin so i can switch it off.

The old Pug/Cit EPS pump is a rally favourite.

Clive you do have a valid poiunt, however, in order to avoid system failure on a simple conversion as suggested above, you need to maintain the mod you do, fluid will need to be changed at regular intervals, like an engine oil change if you will (this could be the downfall of your oversea\'s friends and may be a point to bring up with them) its all demand specific, what the car is used for, where its used and to what extent.

When doing any mod like this, you need a basic knowledge of the systems workings and the effect you will have on them by doing the mod. Maintainance of the effects is something to always keep in mind
