Well after blowing the engine up (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27713) Ive finally got it out:

I checked the wiring and after stripping away some black protection plastic stuff this is the only bit that looks dodgy, it may be standard but i want to check first. This plug is the one that connects to my HKS ignition amp (not sure where it connects to originally).

closer pic although a little blury:

It looks very strange as there is a thick grey cable with the ignition cables inside them. These are white/red , white/black and white/green. Then there is an exposed bit of wire that seems to go back on itself. and connect to a black cable. I dont understand why this is like this and it looks compretly out of place in a car wiring loom. This makes me think its none standard. The only thing is though is that its tied up with the rest of the loom, so mazda must have put this there.

can someone help and just let me know if this is standard or ifthe wiring harness has been tampered with. The worrying thing about this is that there was some yellow electrical tape around it like someone has fiddled with it before. And where the single cables come out of the big grey one the sheething on them has cracked exposing the copper inside. If these had touched then id have guessed it would send all funny signals to the coil packs or ECU etc.
