:wave Hi guys,
I wonder if you can help me, I have just bought myself a 1992 RX7 R FD3S. from Japan. all being good I should take possession around about Christmas time :rollin nice present for me.
I have arranged with my import agent to have the car registered and MOT at Southhampton ,now I understand that A fog light and MPH clock has to be fitted. Can you please tell me whether the fog lamp conversion can be accomadated in the light cluster or does it need special kit or do I have to have it cut into the body work.
Also I believe that Japanese imports have no underseal can you guys tell me what is the best way to deal with the probelm and what the cost would be.
Can you also tell me guys where I will find the best and cheapest insurance and what alarm will I need to put on the car to reduce the premium.
I would like to get all these jobs complete whilst the car is in Southhampton having its MOT / Clock change and being registsered
Lastly guys I have sent my cheque in the post to become a full member so looking forward to future meets and chat .
Regards Lee
I too am awaiting my import should be delivered in a couple of weeks - being new myself i don\'t have all the answers but i\'ll try-
All that is required for the MOt is a fog light somewhere at the back of the car with an illuminated button in the car, but i dont know how you put it in different places.
With insurance it depends on your age - see AON if you are over 25, if under like me i use Sureterm - about 800 fully comp, 5k miles per year and as a second car. You will need a Cat 1 alarm for Sureterm - not sure about AON.
where are the pics of your cars ?
let the show begin ;=)
They was a thread about fog light in past, plz. use search function.
(OK, I\'ve done it for you ;) http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1904&highlight=fog+light )

Things to do on an import
[Perhaps we should have a \'sticky\' post for this subject?]
I think you will also have to fit an adaptor to the filler intake, resricting the fuel to unleaded.
Nice point about the sticky. I will write something up for the FAQ Section tonight as it does come up a lot. Cant do it untill I get home from work but im sure theres no rush.
Im more than happy if someone beats me to it though.
Cheers

PS Just quickly, the Fog can go into one of the reversing lights, but if it needs an SVA I dont think this is good enough so they will need to put on a box first, then move it after. If its over 10yrs it wont need the SVA, just the mot and life is much easier. Most insurance companys will require a Cat 1 alarm of some sort, but I would assume you would want a decent alarm anyway.
Underseal is a trciky one, and im not going to comment on it!
I got a 94 Type R imported in March this year and it didn\'t require an SVA. The work was done by Motormall near Folkestone. Fog light was done by (what looks like) sticking some red film over the right hand reversing light and wiring a switch accordingly. MPH conversion is just something between the speedo sender and the speedo, so your 180kph speedo now reads to 180mph. I believe this also removes the speed limiter. They also recalibrated the odo to miles and made it so it comes up with "miles" on the display. Don\'t know if a fuel filler restrictor is required for MOT, don\'t think it does as I\'m fairly sure mine doesn\'t have one. They also did underseal and fitted a Scorpion cat 1 alarm (£300 for alarm, and for some reason they forgot to charge me for underseal :)). Oh, and a FM band expander to decrease everything by 18MHz.
Unless you\'re really intent on doing it yourself, you may as well chuck it their way, or to some other importing agent.

It should have needed an SVA - would Motormall not have done this? I thought that getting cars through the SVA was a lot of their work which is why Newera etc use them before the cars go to customers.

Hi,
Hopefully my import will be delivered to my house next week. This has been a long exercise as the car was auctioned in japan on 8/8 (3months ago!). It is a \'92 type R so didn\'t need an SVA. The import agent (group20) have converted one of the rear brake light bulbs to a fog light so didn\'t have to alter the body work in any way.
The odometer is a bit tricky. As other posters on this tread have said the speedo is chipped so rather than reading 0-180kph it reads 0-180mph and this chip also serves to overcome the speed limiter. The odometer however reads 76,000KM (47,000miles) and from the date of the chip install to convert the speedo will begin to clock up miles so the car will appear to have at least 76,000 miles on it!
The car has some mods - the best of which I think is the turbo timer that monitors the temperature of the turbos and sets the time accordingly. In order to get this to work with a cat1 alarm I had to get a toad alarm fitted at £350. This will not reduce the insurance premium as nobody will insure it without one. My insurance company (Adrian flux) also insisted on a tracker. For my own peace of mind I\'m going for a GPS system at £699. Be sure to get the installation certifictes as these alarms need to be fitted by an approved installer and proof sent to the insurance company. I think!
As for underseal - I\'ve restored several classic cars in my time and have dealt with the mess it leaves behind. Underseal gets brital with age which leads to cracks and ends up trapping water behind it - stones also have the same effect if the underside is not clean and dry when it is applied. The classic car fraternity tend to use waxoyl underneath which requires a liberal dose every year. I will get a local garage to do this for me when I finally get my hands on it.
Have fun with it. When I took mine for a test drive after it got to southampton I got to the speed limiter very quickly on the M27 and had a grin from ear to ear.
Photo attached...I hope.

Mike
The conversion on my speedo was done by Motormall (one behalf of Neweraimports) and what ever they did to it to change ir from reading kilometers to miles (it even says miles) converted the figure on the trip computer across as well, almsot as if there was a dip switch some where for what the measurement is done in.
My \'96 RS is with Motormall at the moment and I\'m hoping to pick it up at the end of this month, or the first week of December :D :D :D
I thought Motormall would underseal /Waxoyl it. I\'ve asked for mine to be Waxoyl\'d. Something I\'ve done on all my cars - and never had a spot of rust on the bits that have been coated.
My old man used to work in the Petrochemical industry which is where he first heard of it (used it on the rigs) and used to get hold of it for his cars.
It doesn\'t get brittle, it just stays like a wax compound, but it sticks to everything and won\'t come off without using a hot degreaser. Use gloves - and don\'t get it on clothes or skin - unless you want to throw them away.
I wouldn\'t go for underseal for the same reasons (it\'s messy and goes brittle, etc) but I am going to get mine Waxoyl\'d.
It\'s an old product so perhaps there\'s something better out there now. If Motormall can\'t apply it then it\'s easily a DIY job but a thinner, a spray pipe and a tub of hot water are very helpful.
Cheers,
Si.
PS - when inserting smileys (I put them in after I\'ve completed the text) - they always go at the end of the text - and not where the text cursor is. Is this my browser, or do other people see the same?
You sure Motormall won\'t waxoll yours ? - they did mine.
Sorry - didn\'t make that clear - I\'m sure they will. It was in case people wanted to do it after they\'d collected their cars, it\'s easy enough as a DIY.
I\'ve every confidence on Motormall,.
Cheers,
Si.
latest optional extra sheet Miguel sent described "Waxoyl Under sealing for approx £45"
& Si yes smilies go to end of typing, best bet is to learn what you need to type for basic smilies or even better use proper bo uns (http://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung0903/sehrgrosse/large-smiley-059.gif) lol
Si
PS stop gloating damn it i still gota wait till Jan (http://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung0903/traurig/sad-smiley-019.gif)
LOL - Big smilies - Fantastic. I need to learn how to do that stuff.
Gloating - sorry buy I can\'t help it!!! John H took me for lap of the \'ring in his Rex and since that day a Rex has been my dream car - and I\'m finally going to get one!!! It\'s even in the UK (sorry....).
I\'ll be interested to see what rear fog conversion is done, the one where one of the reversing lights is used sounds like a tidy solution.
Cheers,
Si.
Let me know how u go with motormall....?
My understanding is they do a hanging jobbie unless you spend another £20, dont quote me on that as that\'s off the top of my head & student days still punishing my short term memory lose ;), & then they convert one of reversing lights. BenF\'s idea of doing middle brake light as fog also on page 2 of this thread sounds most tempting but no info so far (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1904)
Si
PS i am available for smily lessons but i aint cheap (http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/wonga.gif) lol
I saw BenF\'s posting and thought it looked a good proposal. I\'ll wait and see what develops (c:
I\'ll give Motormall a call on Tuesday and ask them about the fog conversion - I\'ll post their reply.
I really wouldn\'t fancy a hanging rear fog, not on the Rex - it\'s lines are too clean. If I can get a conversion to an existing light and it\'ll be ok for MoT then that\'s what I\'ll go for. I\'ll ask them and get back to you.
Smiley lessons - how many people do I know who could do with smiley lessons!!!!
Cheers,
Si.
I could do with a smiley lesson at the moment!
lol true but i wood rather spoil the lines initially rather than loose any reversing illumination as my garage is a right #@$* to get into (http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/constrector/scared.gif)
Si (smily nerd (http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/nerd.gif)lol)
A day early but I\'m sure you won\'t mind. Motormall called me up this morning about the Rex. The rear fog light - they fit a hanging rear fog for the SVA which can be removed and replaced by converting one of the reverse lights into a fog light.
Cheers,
Si.
