Hi all,
For those who\'ve embarked on the road to rotary restoration, wish me luck.
The \'84 is about to make it into the garage after about 3 years on the driveway, with a view to seeing what, if anything, is salvageable. I imagine it\'s a rusty nightmare in the usual spots and my level of mechanical skill will be playing catchup along the way.
But first things first - who\'s ever had to move a car idle after this long and how did you do get the wheels rotating again? The discs and calipers are well and truly corroded by this stage and I need some heavy-duty leverage or something to break them free. The discs have v. low milage on them as do the calipers, so I\'m conscious of not hitting things too hard! :)
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks
Dave
Good luck with the restoration,
Is the engine running? Will the car not unstick by bringing the clutch in slowly in first gear with highish revs. Maybe not the best way to go about it but thats what i\'d try first. Should get you as far as the garage with some strange hot disc pad smells (as these will probably still be binding). Once in the garage, a caliper overhaul may be the order of the day, should be able to unsieze the pots pretty easily once the calipers are off. Then its probably a matter of bleeding the brake lines and pumping the brake pedal a heck of a lot until they come alive again.
All said, I\'ve never tried unsticking a car after 3 years on a driveway, good luck! :guinness
I would bet that after 3 years of corrosion, your discs are scrap.

After 3 years will the engine run? Not sure, and the neighbours better bring in the washing if it does fire!
I\'ve freed up a stuck caliper before by revving the hell out of it and it\'s not a pleasant experience, just thought there may have been a wheels-off way of doing it, although in the long run I reckon the brakes will be least of my worries...

After 22 years of storage our RX-4 fired up first go so you will hopfully be O/K:)
Best think to do is try to drive it and she what happens, if you cant drive it wack them with a hammer or use a big pry bar either way it\'s be a pig

Thanks guys, I\'ll see how I get on driving it after it starts - I\'ve 21 years on the RX4 so it shouldn\'t be too bad eh?

My Rx7 was sat in a garage from 1995 until 18 months ago we did tie a rope to the back end and give it a helping hand with a landrover to move it :wave good luck
Folks, she moved! :yes
A liberal dosing of penetrating fluid, a donor battery from the Polo, a bit of fuel down the throat and 15 seconds later we have ignition on the key.
\'Popped\' off the stuck brakes easily.
Now the autopsy begins indoors...
