would hope this sort would at least offer some protection (and looks nice )not come across a box in type except one spec-r did for an owner off here with one of the nicest blingy engines seen for a long time
Pete
If youd like the box in ones your local engineers cn whip one up for you m8, then you can spray it or have it polished :) but an idear it to wrap it in that heat proof stuff to keep it nice n kewl :)
I had one made for ma skyline a while ago but i had a direct cold air feed aiming into it lol..
I\'ve got Apexi intakes and made my own heat shield. Not exactly sure how good they are to be honest. One thing I noticed was that although the peak heat stayed roughly the same from without running shielding the temps fall a lot quicker.
I\'ll put pics up later if you\'re interested

i\'m thinking of making a heat shield so if any one can give me some pics of any already installed that would be a great help, i\'m also looking for sheet aluminium (up to 5mm thick) to make it from so if anyone knows a good place to get that from too? sorry for the hi-jack:Thumbsup!
i know a place in scotland but that aint no use to ya lol.. try your local exhaust fabricators bud.

no worries dive in

Hopefully some images are attached to this.
Bassically, what I did was make an aluminium base plate the same shape roughly as the bottom of the orignal airbox, this stops heat coming from the coolant pipes and stuff and is also REALLY useful for resting tools and stuff on when working on the engine.
I decided to rather than making a box, because I was worried about the engine vibrations, I would make some shielding to go round the back of the filter itself. The bolts for the filters are quite long so fitting a bit of Ali behind it is not a problem.
The shapes are a bit random so that they fit in okay. It just about fits under the bonnet! Anyway I still haven\'t really finished getting it sorted, I haven\'t taken a photo of it yet but the filter going to the primary turbo now has a piece of ali cuved round the top of it to give it a bit more shielding. I plan to do the same with the secondar, when I get some more ali.
I managed to get this one, inside is a huge single filter, and cold air feed, think i was lucky to find it though, don\'t know what make it is, but well pleased with it,after my failure to make an efficient heat shield!

well heres a pic!!

looks very nice
gonzoninja be nice to see when finished looks like it will work
gonzoninja, where did you get the aluminium to make this from? I\'ve looked in loads of places but cannot find anything
You should at least have something like a Smiths Metal Centre close to you or Baco or Aalco etc etc etc ask for offcuts in your desired material spec and they\'ll be happy to sort you out
once again you are the man shyne! Found a local one and popping to see them tomorrow! :wiggle
I think this will be my weekend project too! I like Interlopers idea of using the heat wrap too, has anybody considered using heatsheild paint to cover it, like this for example:

I just dont want to unwittingly build an oven for my filters to cook in! :eek

dont see the paint working as would surely have to spray the filters and would black them up - i could be wrong of course

Considering my former employer, I should at least be good for sourcing!!! lol glad it helped fella
I meant in order to spray the fabricated shield/box! Sorry that wasnt really clear from my post. Wouldnt recommend spraying the filters themselves!
Okay so I\'ve prettey much finished the heat sheilding for my apexi intake.
All I need now is some perspex to knock up a rundimentary cold air feed
Also I have now put some perspex on the plastic thingy (dunno what its called) to help direct the air flow into the apexi cones.
Looks a bit of a bodge job, but I\'ll see how it goes. Managed to get the bonnet closed thats the main thing.
Having had time to drive the car around for a bit, it does seem to be working.
am seeing air temps of about 35 degs on the commander, which was regularly over 40 degs before I fited this stuff, even when it wasn\'t hot weather!!!
