Title: Finally a rex owner and the cars not starting.
Post by: StormBleeder on July 18, 2006, 10:11:03 AM
Hello everybody,

Well I\'m finally an RX7 owner and very happy with the car, currently completely stock and in very good condition.
First time I\'ve ever had a powerful car and I\'m loving the driving experince.    Got insured with Egger Lawson for £600 fully comp on a second policy with no no claims, but I am over 25 with no points and it\'s limited to 3000 miles a year. :Thumbs-up

Anyway thats the background out of the way on with the problem.   After the car sitting for 4 days over the weekend tried to start it last night and it started and then instantly stalled, then it refused to start again, turned over but just wouldn\'t fire.    I\'m thinking it\'s flooded so will try to deflood it tonight.

Also found while peering under the bonnet the top hose from the AST had popped off and had sprayed coolant down the underside of the car, not very much by the look of it but enough to show.    Anyone know what could have caused it, or the reason for it to instantly stall after being turned on?

Sorry for the long first post.   Great to finally be an RX owner though. :Laugh

Rich

ahem, 15th post actually. :P

Welcome officially to RX ownership, I can testify to it being a good car, cos I test drove it for you! lol!
Like I said on the phone I don\'t know why it seems to have flooded from a cold start, someone will know though.

p.s don\'t forget to mention you have stumped up for membership too! :)

If it is flooded my best advise would be just to get a tow start.  You can feck about for hours taking plugs out, starting with the accelerator down etc etc.  And it still not work.  The problem is the car requires a good battery to fire up, by the time you\'ve cranked it so many time it looses juice.  Tow starting overcomes all this.

Get someone to tow you at about 20mph, have the car in second and it will soon burn off any excess fuel.  Trust me, its the quickest and least aggro way of doing it.

Have done this when my engine was playing up and it does work well. Will produce a lot of smoke though so be prepared for that. Tell the neighbours to take their washing in :rollin

Mine sometimes sounds like it has almost started but hasn\'t quite so I keep it turning that little bit longer till properly fired up and then just blip the throtle. It doesn\'t happen often but mainly when been stood for a while. If you don\'t quite catch it, it stalls and is flooded which is a bit of a mare!
My only advice is to make sure started properly before releasing the key. Blip if needed.
Only what I have found so my 2p worth.
All the best with it. (once started go for a long drive this will clear it out and remind you why you bought it in the first place :3gears-lh )

looks like tow time rich, how the hell you will get it out of your driveway and onto a decent stretch of road is another matter!
And before you ask, no i dont have a tow rope, sorry! :)

Thanks everyone for the ideas they are all appreciated along with the time you\'ve taken to post replies. :D

DanDan -  might have a tow rope lying around somewhere, but i\'m halfway through the deflood process now anyway so I\'ll let you know how it goes.

So fingers crossed. :)

If it is flooded it might be a good idea to invest in some new plugs as the older ones may well be done for, check them if you get them out to see how badly they are charred.

If its not flooded check the fuel relay to make sure the fuel pump is firing, best way to check is to open the boot and lift the carpet the fuel pump is located on the left hand side and listen as someone else cranks it to see if you can hear the pump feeding, if not the fuel relay may be to blame.

Oh and welcome to MRC,

Hey Rich,

Good to see you\'ve taken the plunge at last:wave

I\'m back to having 2 again:2Rolleyes - They get lonely, Honest:eek

As for the problem, follow the advise given so far...I find using another car to jump off helps in these situations.

Cheers Rich

Just tried the deflood as detailed in many a thread. :)   The first turn over after it all went back together sounded positive then it just went back to it\'s turning over and not firing so I think it\'s tow time.

Ok so I have managed to get it going without a tow, but with a lot of sweating and swearing. :D
Took it for a quick spin and it\'s now starting fine with no worries, however it\'s gone into limp mode not sure why, maybe because of the loss of pressure on the cooling system when the AST hose fell off, not sure.

Question is how do you take a STOCK ECU out of limp mode??? :S

I did put pedal right to floor while trying to start it to turn fuel pump off, could or would this cause the limit mode?

ok, how to take ECU out of limp mode: remove the screws holding the ECU into the chassis by the cradle, unplug all cables from the ECU.
Take the ECU and place it carefully in a black dustbin.
Replace ECU with an Apex\'i PFC and commander.

:):):)

There is nothing wrong with the standard ecu.
To reset it -
remove one battery connection. Now press the brake pedal, now reconnect the battery.

All power is drained from the ecu so it is now reset.

If ever you need to switch the car off before its fully warmed up, then..

Get revs up to about 2k. At the same instant you switch off, floor the pedal, so the engine winds down with lots of air pumping through, and cleans out all the fuel.

howzit :)

FD, you could try removing the EGI fuse (pink 30A) next to the battery, crank it over for bout 30sec to min try starting to see if fires, then put EGI fuse back in, and try starting :)
hope helps

Just a quick update to say that the limp mode is cleared and it\'s purring perfectly again, and I should be at JAE on Saturday so I hope to see everyone there. :D
