Post by: Mr_7 on July 13, 2006, 08:24:39 PM
hey guys after removing my engine on the sunday and saturday i have been craking on and removed the turbos and plenum complete with nest. im waiting to remove the front cover now but cant lock off the crank to undo the front pully any ideas? am i missing a locking location?

also how do i do the flywheel in the same manner, must admit its starting to look a little bare now

cheers

you need to lock the flywheel by bolting a long bar to it,  then loosen off the front pulley,  these have been known to be incredibly tight, although they are supposed to be done upto 95 ftlbs i have known them to be harder to remove than the flywheel but.  Once you have loosened the front hub bolt, remove the flywheel nut and the flywheel.  Stand the engine on its back and take the plates off one at a time once you removed the front cover and oil pump etc.

you will need something with a hole in it to to stand the engine on so the eccentric shaft can poke through

I second this! :yes

You can buy flywheel stoppers but I just used a bit of chain on the manifold studs which held no problem.

there wont be random bits falling out of the front cover,  just make sure you get the keys that slot into the key ways,  there is a really small one underneath the oil pump cog, so be carefull not to lose it.

You will find as you lift the plates and housings off that all your seals fall out,  it isnt too much of a problem but its good to know what came from where so can you inspect everything thoroughly.

you can bolt a straight bit on angle iron to lock the flywheel using 2 bell housing bolts as they are the same thread.

the only pulley i struggled to get off was the power steering one

Me too - to the point where the bolt is still on, but the pulley wheel shattered (Or, at least, i shattered it to get to the relevant bolt!)

Still have to get that nut off at some point....somehow!

i snapped the casting it was bolted to on my fist attempt, so bought another casting and guess what it came with another pump fixed to it as they probably couldnt get that pulley off, managed to get that off on the bench but yet again destroyed the pulley, so ordering one from billetbitz now

hey guys no luck couldnt undo it even with a friend helping so il have to take it into work and use my air gun on it as i dont want to damage anything also what size is the flywheel nut and is it a left hand thread?

also i get my rebuild dvds tommorrow as well so looking good! il keep you updated tommorrow as i hopefully will have it fully stripped so can see whats happening

Flywheels 54mm (no std thread)

You may want to warm the Front Pulley bolt up with some Oxy bottles before removing it, its Liquid Locked and before now i\'ve struggled with a Big 1/2 drive air gun.
