Title: Gauge a reaction *boom boom*
Post by: Andyp on November 04, 2003, 01:41:30 PM
Hiya!

I\'ve got an Apexi EL gauge linker thing in my car that\'s not being used (been preinstalled)

In the process of wanting a boost gauge, now does anyone know how these work? Could I buy an Apexi El boost gauge and lob the wires into that and be done with it, or does it still need poking into the engine?

If anyone has an idea please do tell!

much thanks

Andy,

Yep you need one of these:

http://www.envyperformance.com/build.cfm?page=product&cat=34&id=1185

There will be a a boost sensor in the engine bay thats wired to the control unit, assuming its been wired for everything else thats it.

Then only a wire from the control unit to the guage.

HTH

ooh super duper, cheers dude. I was hoping it was gonna be that easy! Yeah all seems wired in, even lights up when I turn my lights on. Think they just nicked all the gauges out of it!

super!

Tri-power do a good gauge pod if you wanted 2 gauges, fits in place of centre speaker.

They\'re made for 52mm but the old dremel made the 60mm EL gauges fit no prob:)

think you got room to take 8mm off that?

I\'m no good with a dremel, don\'t even own one hehe what ya think? :)

Post by: ScuttleRX on November 05, 2003, 12:18:28 AM
the tri-power gauge i got didnt look like it would take an extra 8mm but got in ok.

Dont think the difference between the inserted bit of 52mm and 60mm gauge is actually 8mm, just the face if you get what i mean.

Only thing is if you go wrong theres not much you can do :(
Luckily my old mans a dremel master, although he did get a bit enthusiatic on one bit, but a bit of black silicone sorted that out:)

Heres a link on how to modify the tri-power guage, might help you judge whether you pod holder can be \'adjusted\' or not

I\'ll have to take the spark plugs out to inspect them while you clean though. Be round 10 sharpish! :)

Matt you can\'t be trusted anymore!

Gary, no mate was still up in the air about it... I think i\'m gonna replace the HKS with the PM racing air induction kit this month, gonna try get my uncle to bring it back with him when he returns...

To be honest, I still havn\'t decided whether to odd the EL and get some defi\'s (bit of rewiring) or borrow a dremel :(

In any case yer only looking around around £65 inc shipping i\'d guess

hmmmmmmmmm

Well I now know what the tabs bit is about.

I emailed RXstrore and here was the reply :-

QuoteHi,
You need to use a silicon to attach that pod. It wont work with the stock tabs.
We can ship via fedex or US postal.

Thanks

I was speaking to some guys on the US forums about this and they say it\'s fine to do it that way...

to be honest I think i\'m gonna go for the RHD centre console pod and do some dremel action on it. Henning from FDUK sells them so maybe easy that way

For the time being i\'m gonna change the induction kit, the gauges can go on next year :)

It had got me wondering about a second gauge too, except I\'m not sure what that one should be.

I want a mechanical boost gauge so I can see if I get a problem, and can\'t understand how a FI car can come without one (yeah I know they fixed this in \'99).

What other gauges can be put in that do  not require electrical connections (aside from illumination).  My oil pressure gauge works fine so it\'s not worth looking to duplicate that and I most certainly do not want a fuel pressure gauge inside.

How bout an oil temp so you know when shes properly warmed up
Title: Gauge a reaction *boom boom*
Post by: GaryS on November 14, 2003, 05:35:51 PM
How easy are those to fit ?
(hmm a smiths dual oil pressure/temp gauge)

I should point out I\'m mechanically/electrically inept.

rather than put a sensor in the sump through drilling and tapping, or welding etc, i bought a greddy adapter plate that fits under oil filter (just screws on then you put oil filter back on as normal) and has a place where you can screw sensor into, then just a case of running cable through to the gauge.

sounds easy enough, i\'ll let you know how it goes when adapter plate arrives, i am also inept
