Title: Rare TWR 1st gen MK1
Post by: banned advertiser on July 10, 2006, 04:56:30 PM
Limited edition TWR RX7, all original, only 3 in the UK to my knowledge. 1980 with 34000 miles only. Inside is immaculate, out side is in very good condition. Always garaged.
small piece of rust the size of a 50p piece on bottom of door and a stuck piston on drivers side, easy fix.

What is TWR - I take it it isn\'t a factory limited edition?

Also what\'s the diff between a regular series 1? The bodykit?

TWR was an aftermarket tuning company in the UK Tom Walkinshaw Racing (or similar spelling on walkin... bit) They ran the Rx7 touring cars along with a few other race ventures at Spa and the like I think. They also made lots of tuning bits for road cars and I\'m sure as Mazda dealers did with the later TWR bits that they would have been sold with the kit on from new but it would be a UK Mazda approved and fitted at the dealer sort of thing and not a Mazda model as far as know.

Mike thanks for the info. That name Tom Walkinshaw rang some bells and so I consulted Mazda Rotary Downunder (my bible) where I thought I had read about him. Not really about him actually but a write up on a Kiwi guy called Allan Scott who rallied RX-2\'s, etc. He eventually became Tom\'s chief engine builder here in the U.K.

Has Tom Walkinshaw Racing done a lot with Rotaries then?

Oh free bump for the hi-jack! :Thumbs-up

TWR Tom Wilkinshaw Racing had teams at LeMans and other big events. He was know for his work with Jag and Aston. He did race Rtarys but not with the notoriety that the other names brought. He eventually went bankrupt approx 2-3 years ago and a 1st gen that actually raced was bought at auction and Carl rebuilt its engine, did have a vid of it practising at Silverstone. At auction were several other classic TWR cars for sale.
His only modifations for the Mazda official version was body work. The engine was totally stock. I believe it has a slightly better handling pack, special alloys with plastic covers that went over the nuts, recaro style seats and TWR on the  leather steering wheel. I have only even seen them in black with gold wheel and pinstrip. Dad had one in the 80\'s and its exactly the same as mine. never seen another. Bodykit included rear spoiler and front spoiler.

Tom walkinshaw helped Holden develop the VL SS Walkinshaw commodore Back in 1987. You must remember that silver eyesore:Laugh

I think black is the best colour for a 1st gen. (second would be white)
Wish I had the coin, but I :guinness it all up the wall.

Fee bump for the historic 1st gen!
