Title: a bit of a problem with my n/a
Post by: edvaldez on July 07, 2006, 05:29:58 PM
ok so i\'m getting a problem with my 1988 n/a rex and was just wondering if anyone could help me with it.   whats happening is the car is overfueling alot and ocassionally pops flames which i can live with but today it started losing power in all gears and spluttering and popping and banging which eventually brought me to a standstill. finally after limping to a petrol station and putting some more petrol in the problem seems to have subsided (I also had a play with both sides of the ht leads) any ideas what the matter could be? also how do I cure the overfuelling?

I\'d imagine its not overfuelling, it sounds like poor ignition to me.
Can you give us a run down of the car, its engine history and what ever mods you have done :)
My old N/A was running straight pipes and I think it only ever popped on the overrun and there mwas never much flamage :flamed

it\'s running straighthrough that was manufactured by rotechnics had its rebuild at 65k and its now at 102k and i think according to the previous owner it has had new oil either every 3k or 3 months whichever came first thats about all i know only had the car 3 weeks it deffinately is overfueling as the smell of unburnt petrol is always around the car

Hi Ed,

As Brett says , you normaly only get flamey stuff on overrun with an EGI

Be an idea to check the simple stuff first, plugs, leads, distributor cap, rotor arm, loom plugs etc

Let us know how you get on.

2x NGK BUR7EQ (Leading)
2x NGK BUR9EQ (Trailing)

The 7\'s are difficult to find in this country I think some people run 9\'s allround (I\'m not sure how good/bad it is to do that though).

i used to run BUR9EQ on all 4 with no problems.

pull the dizzy cap and look for signs that the sparks been jumping where it shouldn\'t be (it should be clean in there with no burning or white deposits etc) Also clean the contacts on the rotor arm with some very fine emery cloth. If this cures the problems it\'s probably worth investing in some new ones (they are quite expensive)

as other people have said the ignition system on a rotary is critical and unfortunately the EGI has a lot of bits that require fairly regular service on that side of things.

depends how you drive Mazda usually recommend one hotter or one cooler plug as alternatives to the standard.

If your still running with the airpump you should be fine, if not you will need to rig some sort of airbypass into the upper inlet manifold so that you can lean the idle mixture down a bit, you can also adjust the mixture a little on the dash pot behind the airbox.
