Title: Coolant Change
Post by: AshRX on July 05, 2006, 11:49:06 AM
Just changed to FMIC and had to move the rad etc. Whats the best way to do a coolant change on the rex? I know they take 8 litres of coolant and mine has about 5 and i think a few air blocks so want to start again and flush the whole system out.

Cheers

open the AST cap, turn the engine on, and leave running for a few hours.  The coolant should get hot enough to evaporate all the water, and your engine should run dry fairly quickly.

or remove filler cap, hold car upside down and shake.

or crack water seal, remove spark plugs, and turn engine over until water is expelled through spark plug holes.

what???

or using the conventional boring method. Remove the drain plug on the radiator and remove the drain plug on the block (it\'s below the spark plugs). Drain the coolant into suitable container(s) and throw it over the fence into the neighbour\'s garden.

I do like the idea of holding the car upside down and shaking it though :)

just turn the car the opposite way up lol

on a serious note,,,,

there is a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator near the centre, unscrew that and remove the filler cap and the old coolant will poor out (wath it doesnt soak your feet lol)

to re fill put the plug back in the radiator and start filling through the cap (centre of engine bay) ensure that the hose is off the plenum (this one is on the throttle body at the back nearest to the bulk head adjacent to the map sensor). this just allows the air in the system to escape.

once water starts comming out of that pipe refit it and start the car.

you will find that after a sort drive you will get the add coolant light/buzzer on as it would of got rid of any air in the system and need topping up again but no need to remove the pipe on the throttle body this time.

refit drain plugs, disconnect water feed to throttle body. Refill the system slowly via the filler cap. Burp the system as you fill by squeezing the upper radiator hose. Take your time and don\'t be tempted to restart the car until you\'ve got nearly 8 litres back in (at this point, water will start coming out the throttle body pipe)

edit: I\'m too slow :)

starting changing the coolant last night, hit refilling it with 4.5 litres but no water coming out of the pipe by the throttle bodies amd the water is to the top of the filler cap. Tried squeezing the rad pipe to see if had an air block but nothing......will it be ok to start up on 4.5 lites of coolant to try and get the air bubbles out..... if that is it?

Cheers
