Title: Rebuild a engine at home?
Post by: interloper393 on July 04, 2006, 08:18:17 AM
Hi guys just after some advice here, i love the rex but hate the 4k rebuilds, was wondering where the best places to buy the rebuild kits are and whats best to replace when rebuilding a engine? id rather replace the housings just for piece of mind..
Iv got the dvds coming soon for the rebuild and i also have a friend with a gen 1 rx7 that he`s rebuilta few times so i can grab a hand of him when im stuck lol..:Thumbs-up ..
Id love to give it a go as iv alot of space to do it and id love 2 know i did it :D

Any links to cheap parts and kits would be great..

cheers for the help..

p.s im importing the car from japan so will be low mileage, i know this dosnt mean a great deal :spank

I think the rotaryavation kits are good, there is another one out there or you can get your own parts. Not sure you\'d need to replace the housings, just get them checked by one of the specialists.

I\'m going to be rebuilding mine at home with a couple of friends later this year. Hoping to get some things like porting done and I\'ll see what I can replace in terms of piping and other bits once the engine is out....don\'t need it for driving day to day so no rush :)

Good luck anyways!

been looking at that kit but been reading abit about them and think theres somewhere in the uk the does them cheaper?

Really looking for the best kit that a few peaple have used and know its gunna be good lol.. think i`ll start with the basics then work up to porting and things.. would like to replace thepipes for better/newer ones so theres less chance of them spliting..

lol cant wait to get started :)

i\'m doing mine had all my parts checked over by a specialist and replaced a fair few parts.  just got to save up that last bit now for oils etc etc and some piping. There is a company in the states thats lists all the piping your require for the rats nest with the dimesnions and lengths so you could use that info and buy from somewhere in the UK.

but then i need four 19" tyres so there isnt a rush not exactly a lot i can do with a car that has no wheels :(

I\'m going to be talking to you a lot when I start Dean ;)

interloper393 know what you mean....there are noises which i\'m sure i could fix and stuff but i can\'t wait to rip everything out and tidy it up and clean it all :D

kewl dont suppose you have thelink for that site do you bud :) lol.. think there quite a few willing to attempt a home rebuild now that they know a fair bit about these engines.. think the most worrying part.. (for me anyways) is the engine removal.. but with the dvd`s i dont think you can go wrong as long as you take yer time.. im really itching to get started lol.

Dont suppose anyone can arrange a cheaper group buy for a master rebuild kit or the basics on what all rebuilds need?

i think hose techniques was the company name but this is what you need according to them

kit for all vac hoses contains:

40\' of 3.5mm for small solenoids
15\' of 4mm for washers and boost control
16\' of 6mm for larger airlines on engine
4\' of 8mm for the big airlines on engine

hope that helps

On the side of the rebuild kits saw this on ebay.. not for the turbo tho, add another 300usd for that..

I think general consensus is that it\'s best practise to go with genuine Mazda parts for the rebuild. Mazda have invested millions into developing these parts, whereas other do not have the resources to do this. The Mazda parts may be more expensive, but there\'s a reason for that: the quality, experience and research have gone into it.

Good on you for rebuilding yourself. I rebuilt my first zed engine which is much more complicated than the rotary. I had no experience, just a lack of money to get it done properly at the time :) . I was amazed when it started on the key! (especially considering the box of bits that I didn\'t put back on!) It did die again 3mths later prob due to not replacing the shells ,but I still think it was worth it due to how much I learnt doing it.  If I have some spare money I\'d like to pick up a rex shell and build it up, the rotary engine makes so much sense.
I\'d deffo recommend it, don\'t be scared about pulling the engine and all that stuff. It just needs patience, and if that fails then a big iron bar!!

Do you have a Big Compressor and an Air gun handy?? I find the one at work most Usefull (its a Bugger to get the Front E-shaft bolt out as its Liquid locked) You can use a Big Bar but i\'m Laisy :)

Don\'t use RotaryAviation Water seals, Not good, Try to Stick with OE as much as your Budget will let you. But make sure you use OE Water seals :yes

Don\'t Use Viton Oil Control Rings as they are usaly Too Tight and you end up Damaging them trying to fit them or Cracking the Scraper Ring.

There is nothing that hard about a rebuild as long as you go about it right,Every thing must be CLEAN!!! and well Checked, Lable Pipes up,Lots of Pics,Clean all the Threads with a tap and the Engine bolts with a Die (So you get every thing the correct Torque). I like to pressure test the Block before refitting too, 50% of the time the seals leak and you need to tighten a little more to get it spot on. Loads Of vasaline on every thing when putting the engine back together.

O and Keep it all Clean!!

You would\'nt want to go 3mm unless for some reason your Rotors where realy out of wack and you could\'nt get any better ones. 3mm\'s are only for bringing tired Rotors back to Tolarance.

Porting can be done your self but don\'t attempt without doing LOTS of reading up and getting hold of some templates so you know what shape you need to cut out.

Vasaline,Check valves (if you are keeping the twins),Liquid Lock

Do you have a Black and decker Work mate?? they are spot on for assembling engines ;)

The only reason i was thinking about the 3mm it because i drive quite hard, i have bought a big single turbo for it, and am running NOS! lol. would the 2mm stand up to all of this? or would 3mm be better? thanks

Well the chap that recomended me to use Atkins 2mm Cryo seals has a set in his  Drag car that runs NOS and he has built quite a few 6-700 hp engine with them in, So i\'m good with them.

You find a Powerfull Drag or Track car then find out what seals they run, I will be very suprised if there 3mm.

There are lots of Proven Down sides to 3mm\'s, but the Benifits (takes more knock) is not Proven, there is no tests or data to back it up. All i see is the Fact there heavier (so they don\'t like high rpm and wear the Grooves quicker) they don\'t seal as well (so you get lower compresion).

You would be best of buying stock 2mm 2pc Apex Seals from Mazda, they are  simply the Best. 80% of tuners who have tried all the diffrent steel seals always come back to Mazda OE.

I hope you got a good bank balance ;) the best thing about the FD is it teaches you respect for the Go Peddle especially when there tuned with big Injectors and Pump fitted :yes

MMMM Cheap don\'t usaly go with decent Port work.

Any of the Big name tuners will port your Plates for a Price. I\'ve personaly seen a set done by WGT which where very nice. best thing to do is ring around and see how much a decent size Extended Port will run you.

BTW the secret of keeping Apex\'s intact is good Tuning ;)

I don\'t blame you, You don\'t want to take a risk with the Seals, i was sick when i had to take my Engine out again becouse of Dodgy Water seals and Dodgy Oil Control Seals (was kind of my Fault with the Rings the Viton are VERY tight and i  nicked one)
