Title: HKS fliters
Post by: michaelb on June 29, 2006, 10:04:09 PM
Hi

Can some one tell me if fitting 2 HKS air filters to a fairly stock RX7 (96 Bathurst) will in any way improve the performance / lower the engine temp etc

Regards,
Michaelb

In my pretty standard setup, all the HKS filters do is pick up hot air from the back of the radiator; next job is to sort out some heatshielding :(

Thanks for that.

Are they set up additionally to the air filter and do they lower the engine temp in any way or improve performance?

Michaelb

TBH you won\'t fell any increase in Power, unless your stock filter is blocked up or you want to fit a Big IC an Induction kit is not realy worth the money.

You\'d be best off Getting a Power fc, bigger fuel pump and a decat and spending your money having it set up well.

If you do fit a Induction kit it would help hp etc if you made a devider and ducted cold air in to feed the Engine.

Thanks for that.  It all makes sense really.  There is no short cuts, I have got to spend the money on Power FC, decat pipe and a tune up at Reworks…up to 2k.

Yep, I love them in white. It is a 96 Bathurst with 99 spec front nose and lip,
mazda speed spoiler, 17" wheels and tain suspension.....
Massive HkS back box and blitz BOV....not much more under the bonnet but it goes up to 1bar boost and I do not understand why...it should be 0.75 - 0.8 It has 16 bit ecu and no decut...

Thanks any way for the comment

At first i thought it had a feed Bumper.. :) always thought the look well in White.

I have heard a few people talk about a simalar Boost problem, the people that got it sorted went to Pip and he fitted a Pill in one of the vac pipes and it sorted it. I belive its got somthing to do with the exhaust flowing too much?? but i\'ve not had that problem so i\'m not too clued up on it.

Mine was pretty stock .
I changed to HKS Filters and put a 3 inch dump pimp and exhaust.

The improvement was awesome, but she ran very rich and drank heaps of fuel on the stock computer.  Needed an computer to tune it properly.

Did you fit a PFC at the same time?

A guy i know has a 94 R2 with a PFC and a 3" exhaust (decat), he ran 330hp at the flywheel at 10 psi of boost on a stock engine. I think its all about having the  Car set up by a Pro, I read all the time how PFC\'s make such a diffrence to the drive of the car giving it more power across the hole powerband compaired to the stock ems??

I have been told on more than once that Stock airbox\'s are good becouse they are closed and have an intake that draws cold air in rather than air from the engine bay..

Sounds about right for that spec.

HKS Filters have two issues.
1 They arent designed to use the air pump so you end up blocking pipes or leaving them open. Apexi design is better. and 2 the foam bits actually degrade and little bits get sucked into the engine through the turbos.

PFC is good or any EMS but it depends on the setting.
If you do get one the std maps probably wont suit so get it tuned by someone who knows what they are doing.

as for the airbox, Mazda didnt spend milions for nothing. but they did only design it for around 300hp. Late model FDs have that standard but it says 280hp on the spec sheet for govt regulations.

Note. the Mines R34 GTR with 600 hp uses the standard airbox because they believe it gives better throttle response. Food for thought

The Racing Suction kit actually does fit onto the air pump....still get hot air tho...going to be looking at ways of boxing it off when the car is off the road.

To use a standard air box on a car is all well and good as obviously it keeps a lot of hot air out but thay do have thier limits on any car as they don\'t design them with tuning in mind (you don\'t often see race versions of road cars with standard intakes).  If you want a high powered car then the standard systems will need to be modded or totaly replaced.

Well there my 10p worth anyway:cheers :Tongue1 :)

In my opinion there is only one thing that intrests me in an Induction kit and thats cold air !! it has to draw cold air from outside the engine bay and thats what a Stock air box does better than anything else.

As mentioned above i dont think you will find a massive difference in performance... although we find alot of the imports run uprated filters..

I have also heard the quality of the filtering is not as great as some of the other brands...apexi etc... something else to think about!!

On the Air Box front, i think as long as oyu have good  cold air feeds to it, then it really isnt a problem...when we developed our track/sprint cossie years back we ran a pipe to the inner wing.. used aK&N large filter and then used ali to box it in the inner wing...and then ran cold air feeds to the box.. we found that a great way to improve cold air.
