Just mocked up the engine and turbo so i can identify where the turbo outlet is in comparison where everything else is.
I thought it looked so cool (Ok, i\'m getting a little too excited here!) that i\'d post up a piccy of it on my newly rebuilt engine:

Blimey looks like a big old unit:2eek :Thumbs-up
Amazing what you can do with a bit of MDF and a saw:rollin Lookin good bud, take my hat off to anyone who does DIY
Might want to move the water pipe off the housing. OK I know it\'s the so-called cold side, but they still get bloody warm.

I was just mocking things up, but cheers for the pointer - i\'ll take note when i put it together for good
what the hell bloody sort of crazy ass big turbo thingy is that. The hot side looks mahoosive compared with mine
What sort of manifold do you have there?
hello nik gutted i didnt hav the money to hav the kit of greg good luck and ill pop up when its running
Might also be worth putting some sticky heat protection on the LIM, sidewall of the bay itself and around the break servo area\'s.
Fish
Ok, cheers! :)
The manifold i believe is a modified 12A manifold. Nice and reliable.
AHH It would\'nt have come of Tim origanaly would it ;)
Oh yes it would! :) What a happy little family us rotaries are!
Looking cool dude, the hairdryer that is.........:rollin ,gonna rock and roll there dude........:cool
Quotehello nik gutted i didnt hav the money to hav the kit of greg good luck and ill pop up when its running
I wish i had the money for it too!! Yeah, pop over anytime.

Nah, can\'t be a 12a manifold as the exhaust ports are closer together on a 12a than on a 13b. If it\'s OEM it\'ll be a turbo II manifold. What provisions has that manifold got for boost control?
Millspeed, Along time ago Tim told me he uses 12a Manifolds that are modifed slightly. I think they are only for T3 setups though??? The T2 manifold is a funny shape so i don\'t think you could even mod it to fit a T4 footprint properly.
I\'ve seen one and the holes where elongated and the Runners where opened up, i think its a cheaper alternative to a HKS cast manifold.
Nik, Are you running an External wastegate with that set up?
QuoteNik, Are you running an External wastegate with that set up?
Yeah, a turbosmart 48mm external jobby. Very nice piece of kit it is too (...and very expensive!)
And now, not only do i (sort of) have a nice new shiny turbo, i have a nice shiny lower inlet manifold and wastegate. I know you hardly see the lower inlet manifold, but the eventual plan is to powder coat the upper inlet manifold, and it would just look odd with the upper one powder coated, but not the lower one, particularly where they meet.

wow looks good :) im guna do a home rebuild soon YAY!! can i ask something, is it possible to paint the engine or is it best to just leave it be?
That LIM needs that sticky heat stuff put on it!

Okay, okay! :) I will.....when it goes back together.
Just one question....What sticky heat stuff? :p Any suggestions where it can be obtained from?
Quoteis it possible to paint the engine or is it best to just leave it be?
Yeah, it is. If you look at mine at the top, you\'ll see that the rotor housings and front plate are painted black. I got bored of masking everything up, so didn\'t bother with the middle and end plates. You can do it in other colours too, if you like! Just use engine paint which is deisnged to cope with the heat, and mask off all surfaces that are mating surfaces.
you can get sticky heat shield material from merlin motorsport at castle combe (not cheap though) it will stop your power coating from melting and falling off
Cheers Dave
Demon Tweeks also sell the stuff.

I think you\'d be best of doing it Properly...
Get some thing like this..
Cool Power System by Pettit Racing. Are you wasting horsepowerPettit Racing\'s new Cool Power Thermal Management System is designed to fit most RX7 single turbo kits , The Cool Power system address the issue of radiant heat expanding the charge before the compression stroke, robbing power from your engine.
The new Pettit Racing Cool Power Kit uses the latest proprietary technology for thermal protection.

How cool would a Group buy of thoses be ;)
I use one of these fellows, got it from turbo dynamics £180 i think:Tongue1
Thats way you get too keep your nice painted Lower Inlet on show ;)

Is this a winter hat? :Tongue1
Grizzzzzz, at $399 thats a lot of beans for not a lot and that heat shield is really smelly pants material.
I like the look of the Xtr, but might go for one of these (http://www.owendevelopments.co.uk/products/product-detail.asp?PRODID=51). Almost half the price.

I don\'t know about you but i like the pettit Kit becouse it does the lot......
-A custom Thermal Barrier Cover for the turbo hot section.
-A stainless shield between the lower intake and the exhaust manifold layered with thermal barrier panel.
-Special .125" Thermal wrap for down pipe and enough extra material to wrap front section of mid pipe.
-Extra Thermal Barrier Panel material is pre cut for several key areas behind the factory passenger foot well shield.
I know the Down pipe rap can be £100 on its own, I don\'t think you could put the Kit together for £220 but as usal its proberly the Import Tax etc that kills it.
Why is\'nt there a Proper kit like this here??? Its a bit daft putting a heat blanket on the Turbine Housing if there\'s a Red hot Down pipe sticking out of it??

Not that bothered really, just bought it because i thought it looked good:Laugh :yes
Demon Tweeks exhaust wrap - 1" x 50\' cost, £42.85 inc. VAT
Owen Turbo Cover - £82.25 + VAT
Find a workshop that does stainless and ask them to knock up a sheet.

Thats not a bad price, How far does 50" go? would that do the Down pipe and Mid pipe?
I think they also use the Expencive thicker rap. Is\'nt the Tweeks stuff quite thin??
Why would you want to do the mid-pipe?
Not sure about the thickness of it, but it wont be that much thinner than other makes. Another place to try for wrap is Rally, Marine Design in Faversham (dont have number to hand), they supply lots of stuff.
Fish
I belive you do half the Mid pipe becouse it heats you the floor making it mighty warm in summer, As you can proberly tell i heard it from the US. they like to keep the cabin temp down so not heating the bulkhead or Drivers floor.
I spoke to a Guy from Ears on Saturday that told me a few things, Don\'t rap a Mild steel down pipe as it will attract Moisture when its off (it\'ll rust), most big down pipes will take two lots of Rap to do properly and buy the wide one (i think its 2"??) the 1" goes no where fast.
Is\'nt it 1"x50" ??? or Feet?? the last time i bought some from there it was Inches??
OK, not sure I trust the US about half their stuff.
I understand about the mild steel bit though.
Looking on the Demon site again the 2" (inch) * 50\' (foot) is £68.54 inc. VAT. Clicky (http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MSPORT&pcode=DEI010105)

The US are good as long as you speak to the tuners not the Forum, Lot of Bull goes on there.
You can get cheap fibreglass heat wrap from LMA

The 2" x 5m roll did my downpipe from the join on the back of the turbo down to where it straigtens out to meet the midpipe.
Just make sure there is no corrosion on the downpipe and give it a few good coats of VHT paint before wrapping it.
