Got a post off the coop forum and was wondering if it was anyone on here? No idea where cos it wasn\'t me that saw it...
http://www.fccuk.org/forum/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=136991&an=0&page=0#Post136991
looking at the post in the link the fiat had to push his boost controller to 1.35 bar to beat the FD :rollin :rollin who was most probably running standard boost...push the FD to 1.35 bar and the Fiat would be eating the FD\'s dust...
What is standard boost on an FD then matey? I\'ve noticed they seem to get real high power with low boost, but then you don\'t get many 1.3litre engines making 237bhp like the new RX8!!
How much power did the original FD have without the turbos?
Very funny, so if a rx7 has a dump valve its supposed to be fast then ??
Fiat Coupe

I think the standard boost on a TT FD is 0.8 bar ? :Tongue1
BIG difference between 0.8 and 1.35 bar !! :eek
Just to put into perspective (standard cars) :
FD Turbo - 260 bhp
Fiat Turbo - 220 bhp
The Fiat you mention is running 1.35 bar which equals way more power then the FD... if he didn\'t win then it would have been an embarassment and a half :rollin :p
Quite interesting realy, at the Jap show on the weekend saw to of these \'mighty\' machines on the strip, quite impressive for a FWD - think they managed to break the 16\'s :King
Trappy I know you must love your car just as much as everyone on this forum, and I would point out it is a ROTARY forum for ROTARY CARS, you might find a more respectfull response if you accepted the superior nature of the machine compared to the FWD you love.
Quote:- woohoo, 70-80-90-100, so quick the numbers and I\'m having to hold back behind him ,...! I then go to the outside lane,... I am alongside him when he slows slightly for a car on the inside, I lift off also, and when he\'s behind me again I floor it! ,..100,110,120,130 so fast! he has floored it also!,.(edit: how does he know? I think he was maybe concerned?? )..this time he has fallen back quite a few car lengths
I think he then woke up and had his cornflakes... Also, if you were following a fiat who was pushing the biscuit tin that fast i think I would hold back a few car lengths to avoid all the bits that would be flying off in your path. No offence to the owner, but I have unfortunately had dealings with Fiat cars......
LOL as some 1 that used to drive a 20v turbo alot with a few mods, these are not bad cars for a fwd.But in no way can they pull car lengths on an fd + what ever he says all of them handle like ****
Also bear in mind that FDs are notorious for the second turbo etc not working, so cant say it was necessarily up to full health.
Quote from: craigLOL as some 1 that used to drive a 20v turbo alot with a few mods, these are not bad cars for a fwd.But in no way can they pull car lengths on an fd + what ever he says all of them handle like ****
What mods did you have? Were you on the forum? If not then you wouldn\'t have the best, first cheap mods... Please state EXACTLY what mods you had.
This guys coop is 320bhp+. It will **** all over a 300bhp FD ffs nevermind a slightly unhealthy standard one. Also it is probably the best handling coop on the forum. Still not gonna be better than a rex obviously but he didn\'t say it was??
As for all the bits falling off posts etc. Does that post not look embarrissing when you read it to yourself? You sound like a moron with an XR3i cabriolet in a McDonalds carpark mate. I can just imagine the group of goons with you going "yeah, hehe".
Next time one of you guys races a coop, put it on here, please. You should have a vs thread so i can get an idea of how quick your motors are with differing amounts of power.
Ok, try this. How does a standard rex (255-265bhp versions) generally do against a standard:
Skyline R33 GTS-turbo
Supra TT
WRX STI (98 \'proper\' version)
Evo VI
Boxster S (older one)
How much power do you need to real in this lot:
Griffith 500
Tuscan
Cerb 4.2
Ferrari 360
Basically a standard coop is faster than a WRX STI over 100mph-150mph. Under this speed we lose out down to launch and gearing.
With 360bhp and lbs/ft torque we are level with a 360 Modena.
At the end of the day we weigh the same as you guys and transfer more of our power to the ground (FWD vs RWD). With equal power, we have much more torque and a lot more of both getting to the ground. How can anyone argue that?
Oh FCCUK it, next meet i\'m coming with 280bhp and lb/ft of torque.
I have a lot of respect for the fiat coupe 20v turbo, but at the end of the day it is simply a Tipo squashed into a posh frock. All rx7\'s, especially the FD, are designed to be a thoroughbred sports car from the word go. Therefore it is difficult to compare the two fairly and I think the only comparison you guys (coupe posse) would like to do is a rolling start from between a speed of 50mph to perhaps 150mph at best against a std ish FD. Remember we always quote rear wheel horse power on here, and if I do ever have the opportunity to have a duel with a 20vt i\'ll definitely post up how my std turbo\'d FD did :flamed ;)
Paul
P.S. Remember this a mazda rotary forum, so don\'t be suprised that we\'re a little biased towards the non-piston cars, and oh yes rotary cars tend to demonstrate much greater speed compared to the actual power they put out!
Oh FCCUK it, next meet i\'m coming with 280bhp and lb/ft of torque.[/QUOTE]
Now we talking...
We will be going to Ace cafe on Tuesday round 7 ish. Our meetin point is at BP Garage, hust after the billet under pass. You can join the convoy and show us all what a real coop can do.
Oh and i can put you on the guest list too so you can park inside the carpark too.
See you on Tuesday...:yes :wave
I\'m on holiday from tmw till next saturday. Have a mini meet the week after if ya like. I\'m only running 1.05bar atm so only 260ish bhp but I couldn\'t give a rats. I\'ll be there. :driving

Thx mate. I\'ll go to that. Going back to when I first posted after i got my coop, i just wanted to see how the cars compare, and you can\'t do a better test than \'having a go\' at a meet. You usually do them at the Dick Turpin right?
I dont think I will come to play in my Xr3i with all my Mc donalds moronic mates, we might all go "yeah He He" With respect thou, just lighten up a little, We all like our cars, but as WAV said, what do you expect, .. and im sure the Fiat is a sweet little car..

Seriously guys, the welcome people get on here has really deteriorated recently. I\'m posting on a \'was it you section\', and you insult the guy from our forum. The tear-up happened as the guy said. Had a ride in a LS6 cobra last Le Mans - bloody awesome and would blow most stuff on the road into the weeds!
As for an unfriendly welcome - don\'t confuse banter with anger and don\'t be as blinkered about your Fiat as we are about our rotaries, we\'ll never get anywhere until you accept that the FD is better, end of! ;)
Stock Fiat vs FD and I\'d doubt there\'s a real compaison, you\'d be breathing our Optimax all the way!
The torque thing is really unimportant - you might make more torque @ 2k than a rotary but I wouldn\'t be at 2k if I wanted to play with you.
Just because Fiat own ferarri doesn\'t mean a comparison between your toy and a 360 is remotely sane. I nearly spat coffee on the keyboard laughing at that!
I don\'t really dislike the Coupe but it doesn\'t float my boat either - end of the day we all love our cars though and that\'s something we all have in common.
Keep it safef out on the roads guys...
Quote from: iaintStock Fiat vs FD and I\'d doubt there\'s a real compaison, you\'d be breathing our Optimax all the way!
Maybe we\'d lose 2 lengths from 30-150mph. The type-R that is, uk spec would lose 2 lengths to us.

We\'ll make more torque right across the range with similar bhp? Mine peaked at 3,9000rpm when dyno\'d at bog standard. It makes a HUGE difference to straight line grunt!

There it is, Fleas coop is 360bhp and lbs/ft. Car is lighter and has more torque, but the fezza just nipped it.
I raced a 360 a few weeks before he did. Off the light I had him (he wasn\'t watching :D ) end of second he was off lol. Third would have blown me off the road.
355 was level though, just a week before that. 30-100mph. A guy who owns a 355 on our forum confirmed that it would be close.

I must ask the question really. Especially as I am a Mc donald\'s eating XR3 cab driving moron who is NOT embaraced about his posts! Actually! Why does a non owning Rx7 person. post about a non Rx7 car in an Rx7 forum wanting to know if an rx7 is faster than his poorly maintained and non running non Rx7 car... Answers on a post card please........
Yeah come down southend saturday night, i only have 315bhp so you can show me what your fiat can do.
You can pick the speed or gear to start from, throw in a couple of bends aswell if you like, how about the A130?(New or Old)
I think its mainly down to the driver when you beat a 360.
I remember that one you blew away a couple of months ago mate on the A130 when we went to southend. Im sure that was a blue one as well

What has your car done on a drag strip with 260 bhp and ft/lbs torque @ 1.05 bar boost??

Wow:.... :2eek . This is the statement of a deluded man!!!
Out of interest looked up the performance figures on the Fiat Coupe in EVO Mag. Quotes 220 bhp @ 5750rpm and 229lbft @ 3000rpm Top speed is 155mph; 0-60mph in 6.4 secs. The car weights 1307kg (similar to an FD I think). So pretty good for what it is but its not going to give a 265bhp FD any trouble nor a WRX STI come to that. Sorry Trappy but your arguments just don\'t stack up......:Hammer :chat

As i said they are not bad cars all in all but the 1 we had well my m8 he played about with it think it went on the roling road at Well Lane Turbo Centre and was doing somthing like 300bhp at the wheels i think, ill have to dig out the chart, but at that it was naff all it did was spin the weels, and in the wet well there was no point in taking it out.
i know some people have made some very fast 1\'s but they have thrown good cash after bad and for what a car that could do times a lightly played with jap car could easly do with very little mods.
All comes down to the same thing really, IF you have the money you can make almost any car very quick, in the end the actual marque of the vehicle wont even matter.
James on here with the H8 NOS runs a 12.2 in his Renault 5Turbo, not many of the rx\'s on here will run that tbh :Giggle

whats their beef with Ross??
Looks like even the Coupe owners think Trappy\'s a dreamer
had a play with one of these a while ago. Saw him go past me at about 90 ish on dual carrigeway, and seeing as it was a fiat, didnt think it was worth it. Anyway, he was obviously accelerating hard (hard as he could lol) when he got half a mile infront, i changed my mind, stayed in 5th(not really that bothered still), and floored it. wasnt that long until i was 50 - 100 yards behind. Fast car? yes. compared to a rex? no! was a blue one near york if you know of the owner trappy?

I gotta post this bit, you\'re gonna love it. Whilst on holiday i had a word with the guy sorting out me coop. It\'s fooked basically. After the cambelt snapped at 6,600rpm (well power steering belt actually but they\'re real close :() the pistons wacked the valves at a fair old speed. Up shot is all 5 pistons have holes in the top. :D Now it\'s no longer £700 for a new head... gonna have to leave the show down for some time methinks while i source a new engine or get a recon unit. Got a new job now so will need a mile muncher. I promise I\'ll get a meet sorted before i sell it so you will all see ;)
Can\'t believe it had to go now, would love to have met up with Ashrx last week.
I had the belts all changed 21,000 miles ago.
Back to the rowing bit, a coop with a £25 chip we do on the forum has as making 13.9secs at 104mph. That\'s 245-250bhp. It makes a huge difference to the 14.6@ 100mph of a standard car, because it overides the boost limitter fitted as standard that takes effect in 1st and 2nd gears. Supposedly reducing it to 0.6 instead of 0.9bar.
Sorry to hear that. All the trash talks aside, Im sure no one on here would have loved to hear that anymore than you do.
Hope you get your motor out soon. :Thumbs-up
Just out of curiosity. What would happen to our engine if out steering belt snap?
The power steering, cambelt and alternator belts are all located on the same pulley. When one snaps they all get caught up. Apparently there is no recorded case in which the actual cambelt has snapped, it\'s ALWAYS the power steering pump belt that goes...
One of the Coop specialists is developing a shield that will sit between the belts protecting the cambelt from this type of accident. Too late for me though...
sorry to hear about you loss Trappy and you get it sorted soon with out to much cost.
If you are going to sell it what are you looking for next??
Did contemplate getting an S15 silvia (I really need better economy and space than a rex) but it\'s going to have to be something sensible and spacious like a mondeo for a few years. When i can afford it I\'m gonna go for a Noble.
The idea of a performance motor that had space and \'relative\' economy/ reliability sounded great but it doesn\'t work out. The coop is not focused enough for real fun and it\'s not practical enough for a main driver. Nope i need a mile munching tank for the family and dogs and a Noble for fun evenings/ weekends.
i enjoyed this thread...very entertaining!

I no there not that good on the old economy but a fast bit of spacious family fum a LEXUS SOARER fits the bill
Ha this guy is making me laugh...
When we were soley a Euro Performance orientated company a few years back , we looked closey into Fiat Coop\'s , spending alot of time involved in the Fiat Coupe Club. But it was the ownership of our first RX7 (1995 Std RB) that changed our direction to Jap performance. Simple reason.. it outclassed what was on offer from the Coop, yep they may be good cars.. not bad for a FWD. At the end of the day we feel the RX7 outclasses the Coop simple ... the coop might produce compareable power compared to a std RX7 when modified even more if you spend alot..but it wont handle like and rx..it wont brake like an rx7. The coop was built for 220, not the 260-280 like the RX7 was.
And the Subaru... we may have owned 7 rx7s... but the scoob is also another great car.... again it will out class a Coop... for similar reasons.

What amases me is the length Trappy is prepared to go to to prevent his precious Coop being shown for what it is. I mean - the guy BLEW UP his engine to avoid defeat. Says it all really! :D
Only kidding Trapster - bad luck and hope you get something not too dull to replace it.

Sod that - 911 (996) GT2 with Ruf fettling. Might take twice as long to save for but it\'ll be reliable and perform better than it has any right to! Nobles are good but not in that league. Or wait until the 997 GT2 is out and send it of for fettling.
Quote from: JapSceneUK.co.ukHa this guy is making me laugh...
And going back to the other RX7 commented posted on FCCUK , i owned that car... and mate you may say it your so called "pin me back in your seat" coop will beat it.. it wont!! I\'m not sure if this guy can read. Seriously, WTF are you flappin\' on about? Ok from the top.
\'I\' bought \'my\' coop because it was a more practical proposition than an RX7. Plain and simple. If I could leave an RX7 outside my house at night, and afford 13mpg, it would be out there. The RX7 IS better round corners, as is a scooby, ANY scooby or Rex is. My MX5 is miles better on the twisty stuff than the coop. The rex will be faster in a straight line with similar expenditure on mods too, all jap motors will be I KNOW:mad: . My coop was a comprimse. Wedge that in ya skull somehow.
What\'s all this about the rex in holland. Someone said it would have about 320bhp. I then said i\'d be confident if i had 300bhp. What power does it have, post it ffs. ****ed if I know!! lol. I\'m just making an educated guess at the outcome. If you\'re gonna tell me it\'s got 360bhp then it\'s gonna win obviously.
I didn\'t race the RX7 from my original post ffs. How many times must i say it? A guy from our forum did. A guy with over 300bhp.
Since buying a coop I\'ve wanted to have a tear up with a decent healthy rex to get an idea of the difference. I like them and respect them.
I saw this guy\'s post and wondered if I could find out what power the guy in the fd was running for an idea of the difference between two sample cars. What is wrong with that? Really, why must it turn into a slagginbg match
I\'ve had one race with an RX7 and it was totally fccuked. An old punto GT was all over it. It didn\'t count in my book.
...and for the post about me vs the 360. I got a good second headstart as i said:confused: From 15-70mph he caught me from a good length back and pulled 1.5 lengths, before hitting the brakes. He probably had another 20mph in that gear.
I\'m sure some of you pick every other word from a paragraph and re-align them
Back to IainT, I reckon a Porker GT2 is a bit of a never gonna own motor. A noble for around £20,000 in 3 years is about the best I can hope for ATM methinks...

Well said Trappy old chappy....Time to let sleeping dogs lie perhaps?...
Wow, last i read this forum i remember it being full of friendly open minded car enthusiasts, seems to have changed a fair bit
I owned an FD for 3 years and a 2nd gen for a year before that, eventually selling my FD due to the need for something less costly to run, more reliable and a little bit more practical.
I spent a fair amount of money on my rex, and being burnt several times in the process, either by shoddy garages/mechanics, poor advice and general mechanical naivety.
So the time came to give up on what was my dream car from the age of 9 and look elsewhere for my road going thrills, the fiat coupe had me intrigued abit with its extrovert design, powerful engine and like the rx7, something of an acquired taste.
I now have a 1998 Ink Black 20vt, with a few mods, and shes running 254bhp fwhp on 1bar, 284bhp at 1.2.
Im surprised that a forum full of owners who used to intelligently discuss pwr and what power is possible to get out of it when an someone brings up an encounter with another car, now is just badge snobbery (ironic really, i dont think either of our marques can lay claim to anything much except dull boring cars 95% of the time) and witless idiots who actually are quite clueless when it comes to understanding whats under a cars bonnet.
Most people on FCCUK have a great admiration for RX7s, hence the obvious gratification of having a run in with one, but clearly this forum has become a willy waving exercise about "my car is best" etc.
Hate to break it to you but in the greater scheme of sports cars both the coupe and the rx7 are pretty low down on the "whos best" list.
Both cars are good in their own respects, and ironically after all the fiat jokes, after my experience, out of the 2,the rex is by far:
A:the worst built
B:extremely unreliable and in places very poorly designed
C:an extremely expensive car when it comes to mods/bhp per £
I miss my rex, but my coupe in its state of tune now, is such a vastly superior car in terms of performance to my rex that its hard to believe that my rex was was supposed to be the faster of the two cars.
Anyway, shame to see a forum full of car snobs where there was once an owners clube :)

You sound like a willy waver to me
TBH Fly almost every car forum you go to will think their cars are the best thing ever its just the way it is and on MRC i guess its not different, as i said earlier if you have the funds it doesn\'t matter what car you started with you can make anything quick trust me.
My own reason for owning a rx7 3rd gen is that they are still fairly unrecognisable and its great to see peoples responses when they do see one, usually one of confusion and my personal taste for driving is to feel the road not be cushioned from it :Laugh :Laugh
Now the Coupe is not that unfamiliar and not that rare but if you love the way they feel nobodies opinion should matter but yours, the only reason this thread went abit ape was due mainly to Trappy\'s version of events even on the Fiat forum he was called a dreamer ??? :Snoring But thats not to say Coupe\'s are bad or slow cars whatsoever.
Shame you think people are snobs on here but alas every forum IS the same their cars are the best ever .................... :King

Where? I\'m not known as a dreamer on there, trust me. Everything I say is fact.
thought I might get my 2 pennyworth in :
At the end of the day, it\'s probably more about driver than car. I am no expert driver, but I do know my car, I know it\'s limits and I know where the power comes on. I have twice had to double back and check if the driver behind is ok, because they have been chasing me and come off the road :(
It\'s a well known fact that if you have power and steering delivered through the same wheels, then you will have a limit on how much of that power you are making you can get down on the road. Having 300BHP in a front wheel drive car is fine, in a straight line, but it\'s very possible to lose it in a bend - trust me I\'ve seen it happen.
At the end of the day, we should all try and appreciate the ingenuity and time that people put into their cars, and maybe have a little friendly competetion in the appropriate places - track, autocross, hill climb, drag - whaterver - just not a good idea to involve other motorists.
Personally I like the open top motoring - so I drive a vert - it\'s heavy but has enough power to see off 95% of the rep mobiles and would be\'s that I come across - and I\'m happy. It\'s also my daily driver - it gets a regular service, and is as reliable as hell for a car that gets a good run twice every day and it\'s 16 years old - so don\'t knock rotarys - if maintained well, and not overstressed, these engines go on a lot longer than you might think. :Thumbs-up
And yes - petrol consumption stinks - but if I was worried by that I would buy a diesel - invest in a pipe and slippers and sit back with a sherry and take in the garden !!:)
So as has been suggested on the thread already - why not go along to a track day and see what you / your car can really do. No one is going to laugh at you, belittle you or ride your butt if you don\'t win - just enjoy the day out. :bandit
Cheers,
Prof :cheers

Hi Fly,
Clearly you\'ve just come back on here to have a pop at the decent folk of MRC and defend the honour of you coop. Of course, if it were all that decent it\'d defend it\'s own honour. Oh well!
Have a nose round the rest of the forum and you\'ll see it\'s still the same, if slightly larger, place it always was. People looking to prettify their cars, peopl eloking to keep them reliable, people looking to make them faster/handle better/stop. I doubt you will though - it\'ll just remind you about what you\'re missing!
If you seriously think the handling on a sorted coop is up to that of a sorted FD then please get someone from your forum to enter the Tine Attack series. There are a few FDs running, it\'s be nice to see how far behind you guys finish ;)
Seriously though - we all love our cars and you don\'t need to take anything too seriously. We\'re all enthusisiasts and have more in common than our differences!
First contact has finally been made!
I don\'t take my coop to track days. It has a totally standard suspension set up and if i\'m totally honest, it would be a nightmare. I personally think my MX5 would be all over it on a tightish track. It isn\'t a purpose built sports car and I have no doubt that any FD (even the uk spec :D) would eat it alive on a track. I won\'t be taking mine to a track ever, as I don\'t think it\'s even worth bothering trying to sort the handling out.
There are fccuk members that have taken on the challenge of making a car with 67-70% of it\'s weight over the front wheels capable on a track however. I have no doubt that these fellas would gladly meet up for a test, but I won\'t.
The only reason I post on here is because I personally would like to find out how quick a rex is at various states of tune. Our forum has good ties with the 200SX guys and lately the Evos has been encroaching on us. Several ex-coop owners have switched to them and we\'re getting feed back on comparisons. They have an annual (I believe) 30-130mph officially timed test day at an airstrip which I think is a great indication of a cars real-world grunt.
Some of our members also go the the TOTB event, and a great percentage do 1/4mile runs regularly.

9.6 quarter is the current 3rd Gen record for a UK car :)
The 30-130 challenge sounds interesting, I\'m sure you\'d have no problem finding people, me included, who\'d be happy to come along and represent the 7 and the rotary in general.
Of course, it could be seen to be making excuses saying your car doesn\'t go round corners. TOTB should be fun as there are a few FDs going there too.
Healthy competition is a good thing and we should encourage it. Better to do it in a sensible environment than road racing IMO.

\'My\' car doesn\'t go round corners, i\'ve said it time and time again. Coops are crippled over the 1/4 mile, that\'s why i don\'t bother with that too. It is FWD and IS fooked at most performance discplines IMO. Some of our guys will disagree with me, and as I say, they aspire to sort out the handling.
They do, however go like stonk with a few mods.

Quote from: TrappyHow much power do you need to real in this lot:
Griffith 500

Cerb 4.2

OK I\'ve owned 2 Griff 500\'s, 2 Tuscans and a 4.5 litre Cerbie so may be able to help here!
Griff - 320 Bhp it says on the tin from a 5 litre V8 - in reality you\'d be lucky to see 280bhp at the rear wheels. My RX is definately quicker with fairly mild mods.
Tuscan - I had 4.0 litre straight 6 Tuscans (they later went to 3.6 litre for reliability reasons) The 4.0 litre was supposidly 380 bhp again a little optimistic and mine were 340 and 360 rwhp on a dyno. Point to point I\'d give it to the RX as both Tuscans were not as well planted as the RX. Straight line would be bloody close.
Cerbera 450 - 420 bhp 420 lb/ft torque both on the tin and dynoed from a 4.5 litre V8. This was a flying machine and my RX wouldn\'t see which way it went. The 4.2 litre Cerbera\'s aren\'t far behind a 4.5 but the 4.5 is definately the daddy.
Never had a Ferrari 360 so I wouldn\'t know but I do know that a 360 was humbled by my mighty Cerbera...
Cheers

I\'m sure that\'s not quite what fly meant. I have an article at home from an autocar issue. The fd (uk spec) featured in a mini feature near the back of the mag. Think it was past master\'s or something. Off the top of my head it states that were it not for the poor fuel consumption and price (i think), then this car would have been the sports car sensation of the \'90s.
The general motoring community just doesn\'t rate it as an all time great, like it does the cossy, 968cs, E36 M3, NSX etc. That doesn\'t mean it\'s not a great car, just that all things considered by joe public, it\'s got too much going against it.
BTW, we\'ve found the mystery RX7 that raced our guy. It was boggo standard except for decat and ss zorst (plus obviously dv and maybe a spark plug in the zorst:)) so we\'re thinking 280-300bhp?
Our guy was 320-330bhp and 300lbs/ft.
boggo standard FD [backbox wont make much difference] from japan - 255 -265bhp

See, that\'s where you\'re missing the point. Using \'sports car\' and \'fuel economy\' in the same sentence clearly shows a lack of understanding :)
Also, sports cars - I\'ll give you the 968 and the NSX but the others are saloon cars (albeit fast buggers). Same as the coop really - it\'s not a sports car just a quick Coupe. It\'d be a sports car if the power went to the right wheels but there you go. I don\'t make the rules, that\'s just the way it is!

Glad everyone appreciated my thread on the fiat Coupe forum, it was artistically \'enhanced\' to sound like fun, but you get the gist :)
Found the guy, via my mechanic, he\'d spotted my car having a service locally and popped in :)
Afterwards he popped round to his friend whom used to own a tuned FC and asked about a silver one round here,.. his friend knew me and said he\'d picked on the wrong FC :Talking1 !
I got chatting and his car he said his car was running over 280bhp, not sure what he has done to it, but it was a decat exhaust system and dump valve at least from the flames and noise it made! :Thumbs-up
I love the RX7 twin turbo, one of the most beautiful cars made so was good to have a head to head.
Was running about 320bhp at the time,.. but she\'s on 363 bhp now:Thumbsup! , of course only in the dry:Tongue1

lol, small world! What colour, year and model is it? 16v, 20v, 16vT or 20vT?
We should be able to narrow it down and find ou the mods so you can \'compare\' :driving :driving
Well it\'s a silver 20vt with a boost controller fitted - drilled front breaks, painted calipers front and rear (red) - not sure too much on the rest - owner works in reading
I think the drilled brakes and red calipers are standard fit on the Limited Edition. I\'ve asked on the forum and placed your description. What mods/ power are you running prof?
Now that would be telling !:)
Basically just exhaust, intake and ECU ROM mapped at present for the engine, but running larger wheels, drilled and grooved discs all round, hawk pads, and koni shocks. Car corners at speeds that would leave a lot of other cars in the weeds :Laugh
From what others have said who run the same mods, I should be doing about 270BHP at the fly - which is around 220BHP at the wheels (18% losses). It was rolling roaded at Rotorstock, but the guys printer was shagged, and the figures were a little dodgy - but the torque curve is pretty flat from 2000 RPM through to 6700 RPM - which means the car will accelerate in virtually every gear regardless of speed. Top end gearing and wind resistance (I drive mostly with hood down - unless it\'s tipping it) limit the top speed - best so far is 143MPH - but I can get there pretty damn quick - from memory I reach 130 from 80 in about 7-8 seconds in fifth. Fifth gear is almost exactly 25 MPH/1000 RPM - so it does a ton at 4000 RPM - rev limit is off - but not taken it over 7700 RPM. :Nono!
I will be taking it to a Surrey Rolling Road in September with the local 300ZX boys - so should get a better idea of it then. And then it will be getting a boost controller, larger secondary injectors, bigger intercooler, water injection, Greddy Emanage Ultimate, wideband O2 and some other add ons - should be worth another 50-70BHP :King
Quote from: ProfI should be doing about 270BHP at the fly - which is around 220BHP at the wheels (18% losses).

lol, 130-80 what? KPH i hope!
Lets think about this, with this link in mind
http://www.lancerregister.com/mlr_show30130.php
This is the lancer forum\'s 30-130mph time sheet.
So if we assume your car can do 80-130mph in even 8 secs, what\'s it\'s 30-80mph time? I\'ll give it 5 seconds for arguments sake.
So, if you entered that test, your 30-130mph time would be 13 secs (5+8). In fact it would be less as you claim you do 80-130mph in 5th gear. So 12 secs sound right?
Then look down the sheet and find your evo equal.
Ah, a 570bhp at the fly evo would be 0.7 secs slower than you! Damn fast car you got there :Thumbs-up
Try the 80-130 again, but through the gears. I\'d give you 15 seconds if you\'re lucky. 5th gear will prob take 22 seconds.
If it\'s kph you\'re talking in, then ignore all of this...
^^^^Yes but everybody knows that a rotary hp is worth 2 piston hp\'s...:Giggle
Quote from: iaintif the power went to the right wheels:D
Wouldnt that just make it spin round in circles very quickly???:rollin :Giggle ;)
Big turbos take a long time to spool Mr. Trappy
Try taking one of these Evo\'s or Scooby\'s on a straight road and at 30mph in 4th or 5th just floor it. This test was done on Top Gear - and their reasonably priced car was all over it.:)
It will take bloody ages to get going, then suddenly the power will come on really big and it will catch up at the top end. Most of the drivers who own these cars know this, and they use the gears to keep the rev\'s high and the turbo spooled up.
I have a much smaller turbo which spools very fast - this is why the car appears to be so fast.
I will try the test again, and give you the figures. Possibly I was using the longer \'English seconds\' :p
Oh - and by the way I only do MPH - kph is for our foriegn cousins
Not sure on my 30-80 time - gearing on the FC\'s is a little odd - the 3rd gear does not quite sit in the mid range between 2nd and 4th, so it runs out before the ideal change point for a 1/4 mile. 4th and 5th are fairly close, and 4th would be a better gear to be getting up to 100.
Not sure how I can easily measure the 30-80 time - I can get 0-60 and 1/4 mile timings easily enough with the Gtec meter - best 1/4 time so far was high 15\'s with 96.5 mph - which puts me just under a 300ZX twin turbo - and I have the same weight. - That car has 0-60 of 5.2 secs - I don\'t believe I have it quite that fast - but it is under 6 seconds if I get a clean start.
As has been stated earlier - it\'s more important to be in the right gear, and in your power band - then you fair much better against the competition.
Oh and btw - I have had no problem blowing off stock scoobies or even lightly modified ones on the road - but that is probably down to the driver - I wouldn\'t stand a chance on a drag strip.:driving
Prof :cheers
Do you mean high 14s? A stock 300ZX was under 14 secs...in 1992.
Seems strange for a RWD car to go over the 1/4 mile in high 15s with near 100mph time...
As for the turbo lag and evo times....eh?
Isn\'t turbo lag the time taken for the turbo to start working when you are at the correct revs?
Flooring it at 1,500rpm when the turbo gives boost from 3,500rpm isn\'t turbo lag... in my understanding... It\'s called being Jeremy Clarkson.
the term \'Turbo lag\' may not be appropriate here but you could call it turbocharged car lag....i.e. it is a phenomonen associated with small engine + big turbo which all turbocharged cars suffer from to a greater or lesser extent.

I think you need to take a look at the latest JTuner mag - you will see the times the 300zx guys were getting in for their 1/4\'s.
The 1/4 mile is from a standing start - you can lose a couple of seconds easy for a bad start - and if your nursing a clutch you aren\'t likely to want do dump with a lot revs on.
You will find that there is a lot of variance in the terminal speed for 1/4 mile, because a lot of cars come on strong at the end and could get an average time but good terminal speed, or they could have peeked early and not make much ground at the end of the run.
Turbo lag - is how long your turbo takes to come on boost from whatever state it\'s in currently.
If you are doing a steady 30mph in 5th, then the turbo will not be on song, and when you plant the right foot you will experience a protracted acceleration as a result. This is why you drop a gear or two first, to bring the revs up, and as a result push more exhaust air through the turbo to spool it up - then you have boost and a lot of acceleration.
Large turbos often have a small power band - all be it very powerful - which means revs and gear changes need to be made with respect to staying in that band - otherwise the car is very unresponsive. Big engines don\'t have this problem - they have bucket loads of torque at most of the rev range - which is why a big flat 12 ferrari with a good driver will pi$$ all over an evo or scooby.
Check out the following from the theory of racing:
Racing Theory - Basic Calculations (http://www.miata.net/sport/Physics/03-Basic-Calcs.html)
Just one last question :
What are the rules for this 30-130 challenge ? Does it assume starting from a steady 30mph, or is the car already accelerating through 30mph ? What gear must it be done in, or can gear changes be made during the run ?
Quote from: TrappyDo you mean high 14s? A stock 300ZX was under 14 secs...in 1992.

Check here for original road tests of rx7 fd rivals :) and 13.8 1/4mile @103mph for 300zx
If you car passes the 1/4 at 96 then you should be on for a low 14 or high 13 at 100mph. That\'s about standard FD performance.
I understand the theory of turbos BTW. I\'d like to add that when two engines, one N/A, one turbo, have the same power and torque, the turbo gets it\'s full bhp and, especially, torque far earlier earlier, resulting in a faster car.
The 30-130 test is run in the best gear for that speed. It\'s basically a full 0-130mph but the clock isn\'t started until 30mph. Your turbo would be on the boil through the whole time.
Hehe, the last thing i want to is have a pop at RX7s :spank
If i had a very considerable budget and space for a 2nd car, then an rx7 would be still be my choice of car.
Ive driven a fair few and varied performance cars, and the rex still ranks as the best handling car for me, and really i find that the steering and damping are its best points, as it is a fairly twitchy car even by rwd standards.
The reason i posted here was just to defend the coupe a little bit as tbh, anyone who thinks that its a crap car is misled/biased by badges and missing out on a very good, very fast FWD car.
When i was searching for a replacement for the rex, i decided after awhile that having owned one of the best handling rwd cars for this side of £50k, it would be pointless trying to search for a similiar replacement as i could never see any car with similiar specs living upto the rex in terms of how it feels to drive, (M3s dont appeal to me, porkas are out of my price range and TVRS are neither any cheaper to run,fix or modify than a rex).
So i decided to look at FWD cars, even though after owning a celica ST202 id vowed i would never bother with a whale like cornering, torque steering off balance tub again :)
I drove an integra type-r which had alot of grip but i found overated in the handling stakes, and its engine was so pitifully breathless after the rex i couldnt stand it, i also drove the newer shape celica, which all i can say is if you pay 20k for that new you need your head testing :)
So to my dismay i veered away from japanese cars and had a look at the Alfa GTV and Fiat Coupe. The smaller engines sizes didnt really do it for me so i concentrated on the V6 alfa and coupe 20vt.
Practicality and build quality/reliability won out over the 2 and i chose the coupe, and have never looked back.
In regards to FWD vs RWD, no my coupe is never going beat an evo or scooby over a bumpy B-road, or an rx7 round a track (as standard vs standard :p) the steering is heavy and can feel abit rubbery, the damping and ride height as standard are nice over bumps but give the car very average body control, weight balance is poor at 67/33 ( which is not to bad for a big engined fwd mind) and turn in is not very direct (although there is alot less understeer than you would imagine)
The coupe comes into its with a few mods, which to my great delight are alot cheaper than most jap cars.
Some pagid blues front pads change the braking system (brembo four pot) from average to confidence inspiring fantastic on motorway/b-road/sweeping a-road.
An fmic, boost controller, unichip and straight thru induction has taken me from 220bhp to 285 at under £1000.
Im having Konis fitted on the 2nd of august which should help my turn in and body roll problems.
Im also going to have a GT28RS installed for about £600 quid which should take my power to around 300-320.
This all done reliably on standard engine internals, no cooling problems aniticipated :p
After that things become more expensive with cams, injector rails, porting changing heads etc, you all know the drill.
So at the end of that i have a well built (the coupe was built by pininfarina),reliable, good looking (imo) sports car which is relatively cheap to run and mod, and is a quick car, regardless of the jibes.
Its also in a league of its own, it has no relation to the hideous breed of VAG traction controlled hot hatches, and is not part of a chain of market led moneyspinners (350Z anyone?).
For me in the end the rex, if you have an open budget, will always be the better car in performance terms, but the coupe still levels it out with all its other advantages (the viscodrive lsd is surprisingly good in the wet).
And it was chris bangles only good car by looks of it :bandit
Also i would like to point out that i did spend a few of my early days on FCCUK extolling the virtues of the rx7 to the un-initiated, including a small but quite detailed buyers guide based on my experience which was read and hopefully used by some coupe owners who were purchasing rx7s.
Quote from: TrappyIf you car passes the 1/4 at 96 then you should be on for a low 14 or high 13 at 100mph. That\'s about standard FD performance.
Tell me about it - not sure if you can see the 2nd Gen 100Mph challenge - but on paper this is possible.
Problem is always hookup and the 3rd gear - when us FC drivers master these - then we can do the ton with our light mods !
I will be cheating and going for more grunt, because its a hoot taking other cars to the cleaners on the way to/from work :spank
Also the wife wants to go head to head in a 1/4 mile drag - and I wouldn\'t stand a chance against her 300zx TT unless I can get some more horses in there. :)

Trappy - not too sure what your point here is unless you are trying to wind everybody up with your stupidity.
Please don\'t try to think to hard about Turbo\'s and lag and spool. You may just hurt yourself :Hammer
For the record a n/a motor producing say 350bhp will always beat a turbo charged motor with the same bhp!!
I\'d have to agree with dre on that one - my mates old TVR 390 SEAC was a bloody fast car and no turbo - just a lot of cubic inches and a light car.
Power was available from like 500 RPM all the way to the silly red line of 6000 RPM. He could actually start rolling his car in 4th gear and drive around all day as if it was an automatic - that is torque - and everyone knows that V8\'s have buckets of it.
With a turbo\'d car, your peak power and torque are later in the graph - not earlier. The only way the statement that trappy made would make sense would be if you compared 2 engines of the same make and capacity and one was turbocharged - but then they would have different power.
Anyways - looks like there\'s been a bit of reading going on between sites - which is all good stuff. So perhaps we will see some of you fella\'s at some of the shows around and about ?
All the best
Prof :cheers
Yes it is all good to find out about other cars etc. 5-6 years ago i had an Escort RS Turbo series 2 all modded up, around 225 fly bhp, FWD weighed less than 1000kg. I absolutely loved it. Was quick in a straight line and fun round the twisty\'s but no way could i compare it to my FD. It\'s a totally different car. Yeah it was quick, could do 0-100mph in about 14 seconds, was quick through the gears once rolling too. But now that i have my FD the driving experince is out of this world.
Come to the next Essex RX meet Trappy and i\'ll take you out for a spin :3gears-rh

I agree with Trappy, partly.
You cannot just make blanket statements DRE that a NA car is faster than a turbo car with the same ultimate peak BHP, because this is simply not true.
It all depends on the power band of the engine, and the \'area under the curve\' that determines the ultimate power of the engine.
For the most part, turbo engines are more powerful, in this respect than NA engines simply because their peak torque is LOWER in the power band, and the ultimate area under the curve is greater.
But I cannot generalize, because a very large capacity engine may in fact have a larger power band, but a high revving small capacity v-tec, may have a very narrow power band.
for example comparee my car 363bhp@6600 rpm 323 lb/ft @4000rpm to the BMW M3 csl engine stats 360.00 BHP (265 KW) @ 7900.00 RPM
Torque 275.00 Ft-Lbs (372.9 NM) @ 4900.00 RPM , to see that the engines have very similar power bands, but the RR graph of the BMW engine shows it is quite peaky, with its lower torque figure, so the area under the curve of the turbo engine is a lot more.
Just have a look at the stats of many common sports cars and see where they produce peak torque and power and you will see this to be true. Its partly why turbodiesels can be so quick on the road, because of high torque and lower power.
Of course, the actual question was asked as to which type of car would be quicker and it gets a lot more difficult here, on a drag strip the turbo car with its more meaty power band would be quicker ,but round a track, quite possible the na car would be with its more predictable throttle reponse.

Yes, do like that....Have always liked the look of the Coupe.....Dark colour sets it off well too.:Thumbs-up
Ok so did a little experiment on the way home tonight.
My theory is that it takes more for the car to accelerate from a constant speed rather than measuring between two speeds on an acceleration curve.
So with that in mind, and in true Braniac fashion, I got the car going at a steady 80Mph (that\'s miles per hour - not kph :mmmm ) held it there a few seconds and then stuck the right foot down and counted seconds - it took the car a full 10 seconds to reach 120 Mph in 4th Gear - the experiment was cut short due to someone pulling out ahead - don\'t want to go down that road :Hammer - I had planned to take it all the way to 130 :driving
Gtec meter says I can do 0-60 in 5.8 Secs - which is nice.:cool
So we have a middle piece missing, and I would need a good long empty straight private road to do your 30-130 challenge.
Uhm....So seems you now just need a 0-30 time to subtract from your 0-60....Then you need a 60-80 time followed by a 120-130 time...... mix all the ingredients together bang a few keys on a calculator and hey presto as if by magic a 30-130 time....:yes

Try it from 70mph next time and start meaqsuring from 80mph. If you had your 80-120mph might have been say 9 secs?
0-30 of your car should be around 2.3 seconds.
So, let\'s assume 30-60 is 3.5 seconds (5.8-2.3)
60-80mph, i\'d say around 3.0 seconds.
So we have 0-80 in 8.8 secs.
Add another 9 (your 80-120mph), 17.8 then you need 120-130mph. This takes a while longer as most motors are running out of puff. Give it 4-5 seconds and you have about 23 seconds from 30-130mph.
Which is what we calculated for a coop with basic mods (like mine( and running around 220bhp ATFW. Both cars weigh the same so we have about your figure.

Slight problem with your calculon there chappy.:2Confused
My 0-30 is definitely not quicker than my 30-60. You can estimate that it would take me 15 secs to do 0-100 based on my 1/4. And from the 80-120 experiment - the acceleration here is quite linear - suprisingly - although my torque curve is quite flat and goes from 2000-6700 - so it should accelerate like that. Above 125-130 ish wind resistance hits.
I reckon 0-100 is 15 then 100-130 would be about 6-7 secs - so thats 21-22 on your book. This is for a 1.5 Ton car with 270BHP.:driving
The purpose of the 80-80-80 - 120 test was to illustrate the effect of waking up the tubby and then going hell for leather on WOT to see how quick the mph climbs. Why not try this in your coupe - it\'s much harder to start accelerating when you are off boost - would be more interested to know what a 20vt could do with that.:driving
I shall also repeat these tests later in the year when I more likely will have 330BHP to play with.:cool :cool

How heavy? 1500kgs!!
0-30mph will definately be quicker than 30-60 mate. Most rear drivers with 200bhp+ will dip under 2.5 secs here. A coop is 2.6. A rwd car\'s 30-70 is normally less than it\'s 0-60mph so i stand by my numbers there.
From 100-130mph will be a lot longer than 7 secs mate believe me. Take a standard coop 0-100mph is 14.5
0-130mph is 29.2, that\'s another 14.7 secs!!
Your car will be quicker than a standard coop, obviously, but it won\'t be less than 10 secs...
When i get me coop back i am gonna do this 30-130mph test.
I\'ve done these myself in the past (no offcial timing though)
Standard performance is in brackets.
0-60mph= 5.7secs (6secs)
0-100mph= 13.1secs (14.5secs)
30-70mph through the gears= 4.5secs (5.4secs)
50-70mph in 5th gear starting at 40mph= 6 secs (6.2secs)
Will get it to a drag strip and dyno also. BTW the coops in-gear performance is it\'s strongest point.
It\'s all well and good trying to speculate but u need to organise a proper timed run otherwise all those figures have no relevance to 30 - 130mph sprint.
Let us know when the next timed runs are happening and if rotaries can attend. I\'ll be up for this. Rex\'s 4th gear pulls are out of this world. Can reach well over 140mph on a properly tuned car meaning only 2 gear changes.
My run up the 1/4 mile strip this year was a 13.1 @ 111mph with a crap launch. My 60 ft time was 2.25!! Could easily have bettered that with a 1.75 60ft meaning a potential 1/4 mile time of 12.6!!
I think my car should do 30 - 130mph in under 15 seconds but hey i\'m just speculating now so don\'t hold me to that!!
Will get it to a drag strip and dyno also. BTW the coops in-gear performance is it\'s strongest point.
Oh and when is that gonna be???....you can\'t even make to Essex meet that is round the corner from you in that coop, how you gonna get to drag strip???
Firstly, you come here and say you been racing this and whooping that and when we called you out, there is always an excuse....

When and where is this essex meet?
http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?p=257619#post257619
My car is going into the garage on the 14th August. It\'s having 5 pistons changed and a new head. Nothing i can do to make it any quicker as the guy is fully booked until then.
So I won\'t be at the essex meet as it won\'t be fixed :2Confused
After this date it\'s fixed (probably the 18th?), I will start doing the 30-130mph tests as i have said. When I have bought and fitted a FMIC i will then up the boost, get a new chip and then take it for fueling check, dyno run and then \'maybe\' down the \'pod.
I will also be able to attend one of your meets. When it\'s back on the road.

The amount of rex\'s you have spoted over the years round Romford, you should know better.
There is also MRC pub Meet at the Wharf in Kent just before blue waters and we have another London Run on 12th August but sorry thats only for Jap motors.
Or we have monthly run up to a Ace Cafe every first Tuesday of each month and last time when asked you to come along you were going on holidays......

Well do you blame me or us...every time you spot an fd; you come on here and put them (fd\'s) down. If your car is sooooooo quick then why is it when we ask you to bring her out, you always got an excuse....
This is RX7 forum fo F***** sake go onto some saxo forum and impress them with your bull*****. We had enough of it....
I may have seen your Fiat floating around Bas and Southend, had a few try and give it but just never seem to get there. Whats your reg mate so if i see you i can report back on here how quick or slow your car is so it can stop all this banter
Quite honestly I think Trappy deserves some sort of prize, have you seen how many views this thread has had?
When you can make one of these Cooops do a 4sec 0-60 a sub 10sec 0-100 I might ..... just might agree they are worth tuning. You have to ring the nuts out of them [tuning wise] to see 300fwhp all you have to do with a 7 [be it 2nd or 3rd gen] is change the exhaust and you are there plus the 7 is a much better looking car, goes round corners and by the sound of it dont spend as much time in the garage:rollin
Tell you what Mr Trappy why dont you organise with your forum a team of 10 cars, say your biggest HP ones, a couple of these 300hp ones and a few standard, we will supply the same and have a shoot out ........ wonder what the result might be?
lol this is getting funny after seeing the 20vT doing drag 1 out of the show room is just as fast as a standard fd3.Add the big hp and sadly it\'s let down for grip untill they get going, and not to much cop on corners unlike the fd3.
But there realy not a bad car can\'t realy put them down as its not like the rx-7 is right up there, hell they have never been much of any thing at TOTB
Here is just on of many crappys post...
When are you gonna proof a point crappy????:burnout
Trappy:
I do hope you are joking!!
Where in Essex? Lets meet up! Is your car standard, if it is i really wouldn\'t bother...
What colour is it and are you ever near basildon?
I saw a lovely Silver Rex with a bodykit turning onto Heron Retail park last week. Sounded good too, anyone on here?
+JUST READ THIS ON COUP FORUM:
I swear when i get the coop back this time, i\'m going hunting for \'em. I actually like it when loads of them get involved, it\'s gonna be so funny when we have a meet and the guy has to explain what happened I\'m gonna get a friend in the car (to make it a little fairer with the weight) and record it on me camera phone.
It won\'t count somehow though.
As you say though, it used to be a good forum, check my register date. I was on there before most of them knew what a rex was. I would have bought one but it had too much against it, fuel costs, tuning limits, finding specialists and \'that\' engine longevity... I would have killed one doing the miles i do in the coop.
Seems you took the plunge and discovered the hard way though. I reckon it would be a lovely car to drive if it was anything like the bigger MX5 it was claimed to be. We have a forum member with one now i believe.
SO WHEN ARE YOU GONNA COME OUT HUNTING FOR US ALL????

Trappy - have to say that I disagree with you on the 0-30 / 30-60 thing - I\'m not talking what it might say in a book mate - I own my car, and have daily use of it - and it takes longer to get off the mark than it does to do 30-60 - trust me - I know - after all this is my car and not yours we are talking about :spank
Anyway - I think it would be interesting to get some rotaries down to the next one of these speed test things - as this is a much safer and saner way of knowing what the real figures are.:yes
Quote from: John Yorkeboggo standard FD [backbox wont make much difference] from japan - 255 -265bhp
Quote from: John YorkeYou have to ring the nuts out of them [tuning wise] to see 300fwhp all you have to do with a 7 [be it 2nd or 3rd gen] is change the exhaust and you are there plus the 7 is a much better looking car, goes round corners and by the sound of it dont spend as much time in the garage:rollin
hmmm... So you\'re saying that removing the cat on an FC or FD releases around 110bhp? A standard 255bhp rexc has 210bhp@the wheels and with a full exhaust you got 300rwhp (that\'s 365bhp at the fly with 18% losses)?
Are you even aware of the difference between power at the wheels and at the fly?
Oh and a coop on our forum did 0-100mph in 9.6 a few years back. 0-60mph was 5 secs...

I am guessing you haven\'t checked out any of John\'s other posts, otherwise you might realise he had one of the best track cars going until it was recently sold. I would tend to take what he sais serioulsy.
For the record, changing the exhaust on any turbo car for a larger freer breathing exhaust will always release more horsepower - by definition - and here comes the science, if you have high pressure high temperature one side, and low pressure lower temperature the other side of a turbine, then some engergy was lost - quite a lot actually, and this is what\'s spinning the turbine. The more pressure difference you can make, the more work you can put through the turbine - the greater the boost. More boost means more power. This is also why putting a big fat pipe on an NA car like a saxo is a complete waste of time and may even cause a power drop as the engine was designed to work into back pressure. :spank
You seem to have lots of figures and facts at your finger tips - how about learning some formula and getting some real world experience to go with it - then you might be cooking on gas trappy.:2Rolleyes :2Rolleyes

Wow we we now have FWD car with a 0-100 time quicker than most exotica:flamed
You might want to read my post again I quoted 300FWHP with exhaust mods NOT 300WHP now when I was at school [which I now think you are still in attendance]that made about 45hp gain, if you look at the stock exhaust you would understand why that is so
Apologies then, I took FWHP as front wheel horse power as I\'ve often seen RWHP quoted.
You have to understand though, that for a FWD car to get 9.6 secs, it must be faster than a rwd car when rolling that can get the same?

Who cares? Your car cant do it so what does it matter? All we get from you is figures. When you have a working car come and meet us.
And proof that this guy is just a windup, quotes you made on your own forum.
Yeah but i like the way that they give in one by one, until they can do nothing but agree. Every point is systematically broken down and disected until they have nothing to say. No stupid name calling, no slagging off their cars, (which i like) and no bad press for us guys.
Plus hours of entertainment to keep me happy while the coop\'s off the road. That\'s why I never meet them, i only do it when the cars in the garage lol.
I call them the rabble. All jap car forums have them. They clear off after the laughs go. You just have to be a little persistant to seperate the decent ones. Had the same thing on the skyline forum a few months back.
Didn\'t take long for the guy to get shot down.... which was nice
How about this for a quote?
Got a post off the coop forum and was wondering if it was anyone on here? No idea where cos it wasn\'t me that saw it...
Do you not see what happens here? I post something, one of you asks me a question and i answe it. Some one asked me,what the fastest of our cars can do, then when i answer you say, who cares it\'s not your car...
I\'ll tell you who cares, John York, he asked it!
Sort it out mate.
I\'ll ta ya what, next time i see an RX7, i\'ll ask who it was with a different screen name. Maybe then i\'ll get the answer i\'m after!

What he actually said is \'organise with your forum a team of 10 cars, say your biggest HP ones, a couple of these 300hp ones and a few standard, we will supply the same and have a shoot out...\'
The end of August (provided you don\'t dream up an excuse) can\'t come soon enough.

You quote the second half of the post denying the bit that I answered... Why do that? He said
"When you can make one of these Cooops do a 4sec 0-60 a sub 10sec 0-100 I might ..... just might agree they are worth tuning"
So i said we can? Are you wearing bifocal lenses or something? Tip ya head back and you\'ll see all of the posts mate :D
FFS Trappy you come on here and, apart from a few comments due to you sounding like a joker, you get a quite respectable welcome. Why go to the bother of trying to disect what people say? Its all simple facts that arn\'t hard to work out for yourself. The Coop may be a faster car than the average FWD but it still won\'t go around a track anywhere near as fast as a Rex/skyline/\'insert the majority of jap performance cars here!\', and it wont be able to cope with big power mods and still be particuarly fun to drive. Its a simple fact that any competent driver knows a rear wheel drive car is favourable for performance driving (or 4wd
Also the RWD/AWD cars will always be a better performing base to use as a foundation for modding whether it be drag, track, fast road or whatever. It just so happens that jap ones are particuarly suited to modding due to the japs love of it.
I know, i totally agree with all of that. Have i ever said otherwise?
This had all finished and I was having a decent discussion with Prof about his car and performance times, and he had actually taught me a bit about turbo science. That\'s why I posted on my own forum about the rabble that have gone and i\'m finally beginning to learn something?
I\'ll tell ya what, leave it :WaveBye
I\'m sitting here trying to work out if you are genuinely interesting in having some fun with the two marques of cars (which I\'m sure many people here would readily take up, the rotary scene is very much into driving the cars as they should be), or if you\'ve just got nothing better to do than go on different forums to try to disect and find holes in what people say?
If you are genuinely interested why don\'t we arrange a time with the guys/girls in your club to do a meet at an airfield or something like that and do some times? It\'ll be a great day, everyone gets to meet fellow car enthusiasts, we can have a BBQ etc.
Quote from: TrappyYou quote the second half of the post denying the bit that I answered... Why do that? He said

Dreamer I can’t be arsed to go back through the stuff you’ve written, talk is cheap. Fix up your ride and arrange a meeting.
Quote from: TrappyApologies then, I took FWHP as front wheel horse power as I\'ve often seen RWHP quoted.
An rx-7 with front wheel power? This is the lamest \'back out\' I\'ve ever seen.
Quote from: TrappyYou have to understand though, that for a FWD car to get 9.6 secs, it must be faster than a rwd car when rolling that can get the same?
I can see your logic here - you\'re assuming the rwd car will always launch better which is generally true. Of course, talking about your hypothetical 9.6 0-100mph coop we\'ve got cars in the UK doing 140+ in that time (e.g. the dragon/re:worx cars).
Elsewhere in the world there are 7 and 8 second 1/4 mile rx\'s. Some roatries are doing 6 second quarters IIRC.
At the end of the day, while the coop is a quick car, it\'s still fundamentally flawed by being FWD and is (as it\'s named) a coupe not an out and out sports car - it\'d be RWD if Fiat had wanted to do a proper sports car.
TBH Trappy you come across as insulting and aloof with your attitude. If you are genuine in that you wish to learn more about engines and turbos and so on I suggest you learn some manners. Your history across the forums is quite consistent and you have said yourself what you do:

Have a looky at this stuff and draw your own conclusions about how quick they are. Just to note, the power and times don\'t always tally, some have been modded since the 1/4mile day for example.
The fastest 1/4 was 11.94
Not that impressive i must say from a 500bhp car
I\'ve read most of this and thb I think there is fundamental point missing.
Until reading this post I didn\'t even know what a \'coop\' was, I\'m sure I wouldn\'t even notice one on the road.
The RX is a classic, I don\'t really care if some boring saloon type car is quicker than mine, you just won\'t get the same smile on your face as when you look on your drive and see an RX.
How many ppl stop and tell you what fantastic looking car you\'ve got.
Just another non-descript car out of the same computer mould as so many others.
If your car was twice as quick as mine I wouln\'t have it as gift - each to their own and I hope you enjoy it.
John

The Fiat Coupe Turbo boys will be at TEN OF THE BEST this sunday.
Us the FDUK boys me,Robertio,Ant,Tim,and Ross will also be competing as well.
So we shall see proper timed runs in the Top speed,Quarter mile and Handling course then we can do some comparisons

Well done Mark and good luck on Sunday. I may try to turn up to see how **** these coops are>>>>
I don\'t know why we are bothering with this crappy. Let the action do all the talking and after Sunday we should all see. So, if Crappys has any self reaspect then he should keep his mouth shut till Sunday...

is the list of cars competing, it be interesting to see how the Fiat with 460bhp copes for traction
Trappy - how far down are you on that list - Fiat Coupes Hall of Shame??
All the 300bhp cars are struggling to get into the 14\'s on the 1/4 which is what a stock FD will do. Also i can\'t believe johns car is 460 @ the fly and 420 @ the wheels?? Don\'t sound right to me!!!!
Any terminal speeds for their 1/4 times??
 Thats a lot of power through the front wheels!! I\'m no expert but surely that isn\'t accepted as sensible? Hope he\'s steering with the rear wheels!

I can\'t speak for JohnS...
I haven\'t been dyno\'d since bog standard, at the moment it\'s 255-260bhp at the fly.
Terminal speeds are shown under details where available.
They are **** over the 1/4. No denying it, i don\'t know why they bother persisting with it TBH. No amount of power get\'s it below 5 secs to 60. Our bog standard 1/4 mile is the same as a scooby turbo (218bhp)...
My mods should give me around 13.9 at 105mph but until i do it, it\'s just speculation of course.
Can\'t speak for the 300bhp guys that can\'t get under 14 though... Mostly it was wet or something i think.

Barbs on that list is much more realistic in the FW/wheel difference - 400/335 fly/wheel. 65 ponies. 50-60 would be a believable number. Unlike the 4wd/auto boys who lose much more!

If you take an accepted figue of 18% loss through transmission then 460 @fly becomes 377 at wheels. I guess the losses in a front wheel drive could be a little less than in a rear wheel drive though??? Still can\'t see it being over 380-390 at wheels.

No reason why that should be the case - still has a gearbox, diff and tyres (where a huge amount of the loss is)... Maybe 18% (although this is debatable) in the rex but 17% min on a coop would be my guess.
The 18% rule seems to be accurate on the rex for stock-mid power cars but overestimates for higher power as one would expect as some of the loss is a static amount. I seem to remember Carl putting forwards that he believed it to be more accurate to use 55bhp as the loss figure...

Brilliant idea - the problem with a lot of the Jap meets is that we never meet other non Jap cars - would be interesting to see the other parts of the world represented on the drag or track. I favour the non contact events - where you go against the clock or on the drag - if I spoon my car on the track I\'m going to work on the train !! :2Rolleyes :(
Maybe we could go to or organise one of these 30-130 events :)
where did this 18% figure come from??
Quote from: RobbieRX-7where did this 18% figure come from??
I\'m guessing it\'s a ball-park numbe that generally works out.
Stock Rx with 265bhp manu figures generally give ~210-220rwhp. 18% is 217rwhp. So actual losses are 45-55bhp. On a big power car the 18% will be much more power - 400fwhp would give 328rwhp thus a loss of 72bhp.
So in generaly 18% isn\'t too bad an estimate I guess.
A very very general rule is 12-15% for cars with the engine over or very near the wheels. Front wheel drive and rear-engined, rear wheel drive cars. I.e. those without a prop shaft...
16-20% for Front engine, rear drivers
and 20-25% for 4wd motors.
It appears to me that Trappy is providing figures based on their quickest coupe yes ?
So the comparison should be made to our quickest FD at the mo which is the DRAGON one yes ?
So you got 11.94 V 9.62 :WaveBye
End of discussion maybe ??? :spank
QuoteEnd of discussion maybe
Most definately....
Just out of interest Trappy, what have you actually done in your car? I mean in terms of drag, airfield, track, advanced driving, etc, etc.
Im sure you have tried to race me on the A130 Trappy, had a couple of coupes try and give it to me and Andy and could never do it even in the rain
Interesting your hall of fame, dont look like its policed very well I see you stick up the 1/4 times but with no terminal speeds and with nothin to back up this AMAZING 9.6 0-100mph, less than a dozen cars running +300WHP. I believe it\'s called competetive motorsport. There does not seem to be a lot of point in modding a car with a lot of extra power just to rag around your home town. I think most of the owners on hear who do serious power mods are looking to see what those mods mean on the drag or track.
And since the original post if I\'m not mistaken was a \'kill\', then I am guessing owners on this site are looking to set the record straight as regards the performance question.:)
So when you get your engine fixed up, are you bringing it out on a track day, or the 30-130 challenge ?
I\'ll be attending the next 30-130mph day as i don\'t belive the 1/4 mile does our cars performance justice.

I think I have to agree - I had a good google around for thissun\' last night, and he has a history of doing the same thing on other forums.:spank
TBH trappy, if you are interested in a performance comparisson, bring your motor (or a mates if yours is off road) to a track or something, and let\'s see what happens. I think you will find folk on hear are interested enough to see what these 20vt\'s can do against our better cars. :)
But I think it might be time to move on to another forum and try your luck over there. You are beginning to build up a bit of history - your\'re already famous on the 300zx forum - so I would avoid that one
We can all read about figures and such, and post up \'kills\', but a lot of guys try and stay out of trouble on the public roads and don\'t tend to get too silly with the speeds - so a race win might be an empty victory for you.
Do a track day - you ain\'t going to look silly - everyone started somewhere - and you might learn some things, otherwise I can just see the target on your back getting ever bigger by the post.:Nono! :Nono!

I really hate this sort of thing, Trappy has been on a few threads in this section, and fair enough to him and his club the Fiat Coupe TUrbo is not exactly slow, but why on earth start making an issue of it - yes he was faster on that occasion against a stock FD, probably making around 270bhp. (I hope all the rest of you on other forums read this and take note, I\'m only going to write the following stats once!)
1977-185 Rx7 1st gen - 120+bhp, 0-60 in about 8.5secs
1986-1989 Rx7 2nd Gen N/A - 146bhp 0-60 in 8.2 secs
1989-1991 Rx7 2nd Gen Turbo II - 200bhp 0-60 in 6.2 or 6.7seconds depending on where you read.

This thread is beginning to take on epic proportions....Seems to have run out of steam at the moment though....Where\'s T***** gone, this thread needs him....Come back mate and spin us some more B*lls**t we love it really.....:yes
Trappy has been given the heave ho :yes
RIP this thread then :WaveBye
Seems we should bury it and give it a decent send off - wonder where the trapouse will head off next ?
Probably the Ferrari OC to say his coupe is quicker 0-60
Hi Guys,
This thread has grown way beyond I thought it would,...errr Trappy does enjoy his figures ;)
The thread all started with my brief \'play\' with the RX7.
At the FCCUK, we are finding that as the Coupe gets cheaper, it is falling into the hands of younger drivers whom really after just after cheap power.
They have often not driven much else, and sometimes have the attitude that the Coupe is the fastest thing in the world and \'my cars better than yours mate\'.
You can see it on quite a few forums now, as these once expensive performance cars are now just getting plain cheap to buy.
There\'s no one car better than another, I for one have loved modifying my car, and the aim was to make it as fast as possible for the road and track, whilst still having usability for the the road and my job.
As such, the engine sees mor power, but also the suspension is heavily reworked as also the braking etc
I\'ve done advanced driving, and drag strip runs and a lot of trackdays,... nothings broken yet ;)
As it happens, I\'m planning on organising a trackday later on in the year ,when the weather is a bit cooler and the prices are cheaper,... was thinking of Brands Hatch.
Would you guys fancy coming along if I give the details when the time comes?
We\'ve had a number of trackdays meets, with the 200sx boys ,the Alfa lads and meets with quite exotic machinery. I think you may well be suprised with our little FWD scrabble wagons ;), if high power 200sx\'s and monstrous EVO\'s and Scoobys are well matched to a tuned Coupe in terms of laptimes, I think you may find the same with the RX7.
regards
Joe

Joe,
Nice of you to ask for our involvement :Thumbs-up best thing would be to get some dates together and post in the Meets section to see how much interest you get and take it from there matey :yes
Cheers
Gurj
Thanks, over the next few weeks, I\'ll check out bookatrack, easytrack etc and see what\'s available.
I\'ve never done Brands Hatch before, and some people thought the smaller circuit is not too punishing on the cars in terms of brakes and tyres, so we might go for that.
Once I get some details, I\'ll post up in the meets section. :)
Have to say I would love a passenger ride in an RX7, I\'ve only driven a mk2 turbo (almost bought one), and the mk3 just looks supercar doesnt it?:) :)
Joe
At last a sane post!! Well done Dr Frag:D I do know that Brands are doing these introductory evening sessions that are somewhat more economic I think one was mentioned at £99 and an open pit lane, might be worth considering.
I see you are in Harts we have a tunnel run comming up in a couple of weeks and I am sure there will be plenty of guys willing to give a passenger ride.
As an alternative Brunters is a good crack.
Wow, someone with sense! There\'s a fair chance I\'d be up a trackday at brands or brunters.
Erk this thread got abit nasty :Hammer
Wonder if the coupe would get abit more respect for being a rather good *fundamentally flawed* car if this topic was not about a *kill* and not posted by Trappy.
Its easy to jump out and defend your pride and joy and point out its many fantastic attributes and fail to see any of its failures :Snoring
In all fairness considering most posters here have neither driven or owned both cars, conclusions drawn by "mines rwd so its better innit" seem abit uneducated at best.
Lap times around a track are only partially defined by the cars specs, many variables make a total lap time, including driver style, track layout, driver ability, weather conditions, driver experience, suspension setup, driver\'s knowledge of track etc.
If you put a novice who drives their M3 in central london all day up against Michael Schumacher in a 1.8L Mondeo around monaco, i know who my money would be on :3gears-lh .
Alot of professional drivers in championships such as the Megane Trophy, Carrera Cup, Caterham Cup would mince the top modded RX7s or Fiat Coupes around any track you would care to mention in there sometimes privateer low spec cars.
And stepping into a big minefield with this one:
You actually think the rx7\'s biggest ability worth bragging about is as a five star trackday car? :p
Think about it, go read a magazine, browse the web, then think about it again.
If you come to the conclusion of yes, you really need togo and check out what serious enthusiasts buy for track days.
Radical (http://www.radicalsportscars.com/range/sr8/index.php)
Ultima (http://www.ultimasports.co.uk/records/)
CSR (http://www.caterham.co.uk/showroom/sevens/csr.htm)
And i bet the OTR price of these cars is less than the amount of money spent on the top *powered* rx7s in the country.
And Fiat Coupes.
:Giggle
Im up for that trackday frag:)
And i demand a passenger ride in track biased rex then require restraint as i attempt to mug the owner for its keys :)
Thruxton is supposed to be a relatively low impact track for the moneypits we drive.
Should have my GT28RS fitted by then as well :p
Those Ultima vids are amazing. OK, the performance is very impressive for a stock car but the time/terminal speed consistancy was equally impressive.
Hehe the donington clips are the best imo, the way it reels in some of the hardware there is mighty impressive.
Yes I\'d heard about the evening sessions for Brands as well, these might be ideal.
I did Bruntingthorpe a couple of years ago, that was fun, but it was a very abrasive circuit and I stupidly had nearly new Goodyear F1\'s on, and they were wrecked by the end of the day.
Luckily all the proper \'tarmac\' tracks I\'ve driven on have proven themselves reasonable in terms of tyre wear :)
The Fiat coupe is certainly not a track car, but it doesnt stop us guys having regular track outings in them, and most of all having a lot of fun.:D
The last track I did was last year at Cadwell, there\'s a challenging circuit, and it was tipping down with rain which only added to the drama!
Fly, I might have missed, but reading your replies suggests you don\'t drive an RX7, what do you drive now? I\'m interested as I fitted a GT28rs last year to my Coupe? its a cracking turbo.

Joe

At the end of the day, thats what it\'s all about, enjoying your car and having fun :Thumbs-up

Ulitima GTR is 40-60k as a self build depending on spec and final engine choice (e.g. 750bhp mtor etc!).
The radical is in the 30-40k region and you can\'t pay for it in bits. Top spec RX might cost 30-40k but it\'ll have been done over a number of years, maybe 10k a year so us normal folk can affors supercar performance.
Ultima, Radical, Caterfields, Atom, etc are all top performing track toys and most will muller a sorted rx (the radical and ultima are essentially road going race cars though).
The only thing that\'s really important is enjoying our cars. As you said - lap times are more about the driver than the car. I have a quick car that, with a good driver would easily lap Brands very quickly but I\'m slowww and not very skilled. Much lower powered cars were lapping faster than me at the last MRC brands day although the torrential rain might have had a say in that!
I\'d certainly be up for a day there with the Coop crowd - always good to get out there with like-minded entusiasts.
Just thought id add into this, if you want a goood trackday with other FWD cars and quality banter, why not try and co-organise something with the boys over at //www.itr-dc2.com theres a few of them up there who regularly go out on circuit and they aint got no turbos!
I have a coupe frag, hence my bias towards it these days :)
As much as I hate to bump this topic.. I just stumbled on this interesting video..
