Title: First time poster - Does this sound right?
Post by: TwistedHumour on June 29, 2006, 05:04:10 PM
Its my first post so the first thing I\'ll say is hi to everyone!

I saw a red RX7 in Swansea about a month ago (1st time I\'d actually seen one) and fell in love with it straight away. After reading thought the info on this forum I made the decision to sell my current car and find a nice RX7 for around £7-8k

However, due to my age, 20, insurance was going to be the killer! So based on a 20yr old, 1 yr NCB, driving a stock 92 RX7 Type R doing 7000 a year with a £500 excess. Car garaged with my dad as a second driver. Best quote was £1,800, with others not too far out- and if I wait till November (extra years no claims), it will come down to £1,200. I must say I was expecting it to be a lot more!

After reading the posts in this section this seems to be very low!

What might I have done wrong to get such a low quote, or does this seem to be right?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Cheers
Chris

Hi,

check that they\'ve not got engine as 2354cc. That drops it loads as is based on a group 16 gen 2. I think the insurance databases are messed up big time.

At 24 with 5 years no claims and no points I couldn\'t get mine below £1400 2 years ago.

Good luck with sorting something mate.

Ahh.. checked the quotes and they keep coming up as a 2.3l

Time to check again and see the damage :(

By the way, I usually use //www.moneysupermarket.com to get insurance quotes

That\'ll be why then mate, you\'re looking for 2616cc. Like I said the insurance databases are screwed up big time. If you talk to someone who knows what they\'re on about you\'ll be ok but most on the phones are just monkeys with "computer says no" attitudes.

Here\'s a list of insurers I\'ve tried with some results of my calls included. I\'m currently with Egger Lawson and they\'re good however their underwriters don\'t like under 25\'s.

Good luck mate and keep looking you might get it insured.

Gareth

Thanks very much for that list!  Should come in handy.

I know its the 3rd Gen I\'m after, but as far as model goes I\'m still confused - even after reading the guides

As I\'m after a stock\'ish car - what model would be good to use for checking out insurance.

Cheers

Just go for Type-R mate, that\'s what the majority that you will find are. You\'ll probably come across a few type-X\'s as well but for insurance quote\'s I\'d stick to the Type-R.

cheers

All 3rd gens are group 20 insurance so you can get the same quote for a stock uk car at 235bhp and a type-r at 280bhp.

You may be too young to find good insrance, im 27 and still struggle for a good quote !

Looking at it - I think it will pay dividends if i til I\'m 21 (can I wait til next year :()

I\'ve been offered a more modest 1l Polo so I can sell my car now - leaving me plenty of time to find the right car and even more time to get it just right before I start to drive it.  Not to mention the money I\'ll save on fuel and insurance.

Cheers for the help - no doubt more posts to follow :P

If you can find a genuine UK car as opposed to a Jap import It should be a lot easier to insure and cheaper too. Trouble is they are quite thin on the ground....At your age could make quite a difference to premium though.

Cheapest quote I can get for the RX @ 25 is £845 FC with Egger Lawson.

I have 1 claim just under 3 years ago and live in London. 2 years NCB.
