Title: Plate Lapping?
Post by: Grizzly on November 02, 2003, 04:32:15 PM
How much can you take of a 13b Plate before it needs reHardening?

Also does anyone know of any Engineering firms in the North west (Around Manchester) that have done Rotary Plates before?

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris!  How are you?

I don\'t think you can re-harden them in a hurry.  And you can only take off "x" amount before you have to throw them away.

Check //www.iluvmyrx7.com for the wear amounts (I\'ll check later also).

Carl should know of some places around - but don\'t trust anyone that hasn\'t done em before.

Lapping is very subjective,I only lap a housing for an FD once and even then find that the housing may still be unusable, you need to do the absolute minimum possible. This is because the of the Nitrided (Hardened) Surface is not very deep.
You must also check the side housing for distortion,if it is more than 0.04 mm then the housing is no good, but if the stepped wear of the side seals is more than 0.1mm then also the housing is no good, this means that in either case there is a good reason to look at lapping.
It is obvious that if you need to lap more than 0.1mm that you will lose much of the nitriding,as you will have already lost some in wear,so a warped housing may be salvageable as it may require less to remove the distortion which will bring the stepped wear back into tolerance.
The main thing is to look at the rest of the side housing though to see if it is in good condition after lapping.
Kind regards
Carl

Ok, so unless i want to go to great lenths having them reHardened its not worth it, I have had a qoute for the work of a good Engineering company near me (but they\'ve never done a plate before).

So after looking into it and weighing the price of a new plate against having one reserfaced i think i\'ll be buying new.

Chris

P.s. Yeh i\'m doing good Glen, Its getting a little cold for nights in the garage but things are starting to take shape. Have\'nt seen you post much does this mean you\'ve been Bussy ;)

re-nitriding may not be that expensive if you do it in batches. One of the other things on my very long \'must get a quote on sometime\' list.
