Title: Few questions from a new RX7 owner...
Post by: Guishnu on June 23, 2006, 02:44:48 PM
Hi there :)
There is a possibility that i may end up with a very nice FD at some point in the near future. I just wanted to address a few questions to this board and ask you for your advice/answers.

Really sorry to be such a pain asking so many questions in my first post. But I would really appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks

The steering lock is not that bad, I wouldn\'t try messing with it. I\'d scrub this from your list of questions if i were you :)

  • I know the FD suffers from quite poor steering lock. I know there is a kit you can buy from Japan which moves the steering rack back. Can anybody give me any advice on ways to improve steering lock?

Thanks for your feedback maxim,
From my own experiences with the FD the steering rack is no where near as good as what im used to. I suppose i should probably point out that the car (if it all comes off) is going to be used for drifting.
I know how to setup and increase the steering lock on most nissan performance applications (200sx, Skyline, etc) but im a bit clueless when it comes to FD\'s  :xconfused

Thanks :)

My rx7\'s turning circle is much tighter than my mates renault clio so the steering lock can\'t be that bad.

LOL :)
I didn\'t want to make this into a steering lock debate. Just wanted to know if there was any way to increase the standard steering lock. As im sure you all know steering lock is very important when drifting. All cars need to have there lock modified to some extent. I just wondered if anybody had any advice on how to do it?

in my experience messing with the setup (steering lock, suspension setup with tension rods et al) is normally used as a way of masking drifting ability. The fds steering lock for drift use is very good...

Im not going to argue the case. People mod steering racks for a reason - can anybody give me any information on how to do this on an FD?

Nice warm welcome from MRC!

Garry @ Rotary art is running a drift FD, he may be able to help.

P.s i think the steering lock is crap.

The stock radiator is very good in the stock location, the only 2 problems with it are plastic end tanks (could crack when over heated or old) and if you upgrade to an FMIC it struggles to keep temps down.

in addition to upgrading the stock radiator, I\'d also upgrade the plastic AST (air separation tank). They\'re very prone to splitting and spurting coolant all over the shop :(
I think you\'ll be blazing a trail on the steering lock modification, it\'ll be interesting to see how it works.
To answer another of your questions, you don\'t need geometry mods as such - the stock FD suspension is adjustable for everything (except ride height) from the factory :)

edit: forgot, and welcome! :wave

Thanks fro (and Kieron  :wave )
Nice to have some answers! Do you know exactly how much adjustment you can get (camber most importantly) you can get on the standard setup?

I would like to be running around 2.5 - 3.0 degs of camber on the front if possible. Will the standard setup take these extreme angles?

No idea mate. Found this on a US forum

A friend and I are working on importing some high quality tie rod ends and steering rack spacers for the FC and FD from a company called Supernow!. Any FC drifter learns fast how much the steering angle on the car sucks. My friend put them on his car and the transition from lock to lock is very smooth and greatly improved. The ends themselves are a made from a heim joint and a threaded piece with two lock nuts on top and bottom. So rather than having just one cotter pin you have two lock nuts. The tie rod ends works wonders, and I have heard nothing but good about them. If anyone is scepticle Tony Angelo is running them on his FC right now as a few others, and they love em.

They make 3 different kinds:

1. Tie rod ends (basically a waste)
2. Tie rod ends with spacers
3. Racing type (fully adjustable)

Right now I am trying to work out the pricing for them from SuperNow and the shipping cost to the US. Email me at sikokillr@aol.com or reply here if interested, and maybe if we get enough people we can maybe get a group buy.

Hope thats oem help to you. You need to be registered to read the full thread.

I\'ve seen a couple of stateside autocrossers running 2.5 degrees on the front, If no one comes up with the goods in the meantime I\'ll try and get more info.

to answer another question (we\'ll get a full set soon), yes the 13b will burn oil - as standard a small amount of sump oil is injected straight into the rotor housings for lubrication. On mine, the amount used between oil changes (3000 miles) is hardly noticable :)

Looking at some threads on rx7club it seems 2.5 negative camber is possible on the front using the stock adjusters, nearer 3.0 if the car is lowered.. the consensus seems to be you might not need that much but at least you can give it a go  :Thumbs-up
