Title: Thanks to Carl
Post by: AtomicRex on June 22, 2006, 05:51:10 PM
Once again Carl has come to the rescue!!!

We were testing down at Combe today, and the car was flying...however a number of issues popped up, but Carl has dropped everything and has taken on the work to get the car ready for its next race on Saturday!!

From basic timings made from the pit lane the car is approx 3 -5 seconds a lap faster than the next person in my class!!!

:cheers

Here are some pics from the Day

Carl and Brunswick have done an amazing job!!  Especially considering the problems they had to deal with from the previous mechanic ;)

Well now we\'ve suffered another blow, and judging from the noise...bucket of bolts being rattled rather well....the engine has given up the ghost.  It was a waiting game, but at least I now get a properly ported engine.

So Carl gets the chance to repeat the amazing engine he built for Brunswick for their 24 hr stint at silverstone.

Should be a lot more reliable, and give a couple of extra horses over standard ;)

Hope it all gets sorted.

The day was going absolutely fantastic.

Made it to Combe for 8 and unloaded the car from the trailer, first making a new set of ramps by sawing a large scaffolding plank in half!

Rich, one of the guys from Brunswick, started on the full spanner check whilst I faffed around chatting to the other guys in my category  and drinking coffee!

11:15 and time for qualifying, noise testing was the usual embarrassment 97.8db (DB limit), having had a total disaster with testing on Thursday due to intercool pipes falling off, we went out with confidence that everything was going to work fine! It was rather tight out there as there were 29 people on the grid ranging from the likes of me in Cat D to a radical SR8 in Cat A, so as you can guess the speed differentials were huge! My class consisted of a Ferrari 355, Toyota MR2 turbo, Porsche 911, and 2 Ginettas as well as me in the Rex. The race is a rolling start, so the qualifying is in my eyes more important as you aren\'t allowed to overtake the person in front until you cross the line, and they dictate the pace up to that point.

Came in after 6 laps as the oil temps were alarming on the SPA, but 110 wasn\'t overly high so adjusted the alarm to 140!!

Still we managed a 01:17.858 which was 0.6 seconds off the pace of the 355  and second in class

The race wasn\'t until 15:50, so plenty of time for a wander round the circuit and get some sun. Another spanner check by Rich, and it was time for the race.

Sat on the grid with Keith to my right, but the car was suffering a bit. it had a bit of a misfire, but oil pressure was high, so everything was good. Safety car set off, and the lead car kept everyone bunched up right up until coming out of bobbies where the hammer went down! The pack split up but I kept Keith as close to my bumper as possible! On crossing the start finish line my only aim was to beat the 355 into quarry, so foot buried to the floor we overtook it going round the outside of Folly. We were now in the lead

However the engine then went bang  coming up to Tower. So I lead my class for half a lap

So off to Carl for a new engine.....who ever thinks racing is cheap, then please come and pay some of my bills!!!

Will post some more pics when they come up on the various sites

Nice one..

But I thought this post was because Carl tuned and sorted the car in the first place and now it\'s toast?

Carl, was repairing work done by the previous garage to Brunswick.  The intercooler pipes were coming off because originally the pipe to the intercooler didn\'t fit, so they cut the end off.....including the swaged end, he also sorted the oil breathing problem that was left over.

So no Carl did a great job, just a shame he was having to work on an engine that someone else had ruined!

No worries, just that you said Carl sorted the car out for this race meet and then the car died not even completing the event...?

 Good Luck with the rebuild.........

I wanted to make sure there was no misunderstanding as Carl has been doing such a great job for us.  Its so good to finally find someone that actually takes a vested interest in a project, and isn\'t just in it for the money!!!

It\'s great to see a rex out there racing - credit to you and your wallet for doing something that many of us only day-dream about!!!

The famous quote about racing and money is "How do you make a small fortune from Motorsport?  Start with a large one!".

Commiserations on the engine death but seems as though the car is on the pace - just need to finish one now - when\'s the next race meet?

Next race meet is on the 5th Aug

Would be great if some guys from here fancy coming along to watch!!!  We could have a Rex Area ;)

The car is defo on pace, but there is still loads more to come....just need to keep that right foot buried a little more.  The new engine should make a massive difference, so expect another 3 seconds off the the lap times :)

I\'m not sure if you\'d be allowed in my category as your engine has changed away from Mazda\'s original concept.  That said they did produce a triple didn\'t they??

You do need roll cage, fire stuff, electrical cut outs, harnesses and seats, all of which need to have FIA stamps to new regs.  You need an ARDS license too.

Otherwise it would be good to have you along!!!

Hah, not I :)

What have you got cage-wise? a weld-in custom cages job like (I tihnk) Giles?
Title: Thanks to Carl
Post by: AtomicRex on June 26, 2006, 02:32:34 PM
Yeah the same as Giles to the button!

Its a great cage, and you wouldnt believe the warm feeling you get being out at the nurburgring in it compared to anything else!!!

Im trying to convince Giles to come along and get their rex out on the 5th!!!  Maybe you can pressure him too!!! ;-)

Just as a point of interest to everyone about the engine that Jon was running,it was a complete stocker that I rebuilt about 2 years ago for the previous owner.
The new race engine will of course be built  specifically for race specs.
Thanks for the kind words Jon.
Regards
Carl
