Probably a stupid question but what does the air pump do? Was looking at a schematic the other day which showed the air pump shifting cool air into the exhaust ports and out through the thermal reactor. Is this correct? Is it a way of cooling the exhaust ports so that the rotor housings dont melt?
I\'m fitting a proper header and exhaust soon, can I ditch the air pump?
It was used to get emmissions down.
Ok, thanks. Gonna ditch this when the new header goes on. One less pulley belt to worry about. :WaveBye
best thing to do is use it as a door stop!
like you say one less belt

Door stop it is then!
What header you got there Mark? Looks the business, nice big bends.
if i\'m honest i dont know it was brought second hand but it\'s a stainless system
are you going to Santa pod this weekend?
Cant make Santa Pod unfortunately, real bummer cos wanted to go.
Off to Le Mans Classic next weekend though, cant wait!
If you search around, some people manage to get a belt that will fit your pulleys without the air pump.
There is a kit you can buy that changes the speed of the water pump. I dont recommend this, because it reduces the speed of the water pump. It is a good idea, if you are racing and there are very long straights. for a road car, its a very bad idea.
Some report that the idling gets a bit rough after removing the air pump. Please post back here your findings.
Gary is correct. It helps the unburnt parts of the mixture to burn after leaving the exhaust port, by adding air.

DOH - just realised you posted in the 1st gen section. I dont think 1st gens idling is affected with air pump removal.
