Title: time for a bit more power
Post by: peterwolds on June 21, 2006, 03:10:17 PM
standard engine except power fc and commander, hard pipes and twin induction kit - before pipes/induction mapped at 225 RWHP,dont have a boost controller.
dont want to go mad but like to see around 280 RWHP whats the best route(presume fuel pump & injectors a starter) ?

It depends on what you really want. You could decat and remove airpump to get more ponies but you will probably want to increase the size of your injectors and put a better fuel pump in as well. You may want to swap the stock intercooler for a bigger stock mount too if raising boost levels.

It will make the car much louder too so if you do alot of motorway miles you may want a silenced mid pipe.

280RWHP shouldn\'t be too hard to get, you\'ll have raise your boost level too to get to that figure.

Cheers Shaun, not worried about being a bit louder my exhaust is a dunke megaphone it makes a stealth bomber sound loud  :rollin .
due mot july have to see how emissions come out not got decat pipe on at moment, bit of faffing about when i had an evo putting cat on and off for mot but should give another 5 ponies or so if decat fitted.what size injectors is it going to need around 850 ?
had a walbro pump on my evo was loud when just ticking over whats the bosch like do you know ?

The stock injectors are 550 and 850. Usually people upgrade to 1200 on the secondarys to get a bit more flow. Pip at WGT upgraded my pump and injectors so not really sure what im running pump wise. It isn\'t any noisier that the stock one.

You may find that it can be tuned without the injectors needing to go any bigger. I think the cutoff for the stock injectors is around 0.85bar of boost. Im running 1 bar and see about 75-80% duty max on the 550/1200 on a rich map.

I\'d say fit a bigger stock mount first and get it remapped and assess what you need to do to your fueling, any of the tuners on here will tell you want is best for the car !

Jon (hotstepper) is running about 0.9bar boost on stock intercooler and stock injectors without too much headaches !

thanks again shaun - takes a bit of getting to grips with RX7 after evo especialy when talking of boost levels like this as my evo after ecutek done on ecu was  at 1.5 bar  - learning as i go along, should get a boost controller (either AVCR or Blitz ) as well as change intercooler.then looks like a trip to manchester for remap

Mine has got 280 at the wheels at the moment and all thats different from yours is its decated and been mapped well. Standard engine, intercooler and injectors, running 0.8bar :)

strange wonder why so diferent decat only adds 5 ponies or so,mine was mapped by reworx before i got it wonder if been an ultra cautious mapping ? Had a quote from "sam the dentist" for mapping was £400 which i thought was high for a remap job plus rolling time at scoobyclinic which was £75 last time i had a car done - did include 3 runs whilst ecu was flashed & mapped

Unless you have a cold air feed for that induction kit I\'d go back to standard as induction kits sucking in hot air = less power.

I\'ve got standard engine, apexi, HKS downpipe with Re-amemiya mid pipe and catback, non seq turbos and made 285 at the wheels.

I\'d go for the greddy profec b spec ii for boost controller, infinately adjustable !

I\'d go to wgt for your mapping session, closest place i can think of ! Maybe the downpipe and cat bringing your figures down. If you off to manchester its only another 30 mins down road.

Shaun - intend to go to wgt knew were manchester (ish) didnt make it clear above when on about "sam the dentist" mapping (great bloke knows evos and scoobies but not sure on RX 7\'s) want to use someone who knows the limits on mapping safely an RX7.

The waters injected into the airflow before fuels added to the mixture :p

Lots of threads on the subject if you do a quick search !

Pip is very good and won\'t go too silly with the mapping.

The SMIC are the easier to fit but they still suffer from heat soak off the engine. Id say that most of the front mounts aren\'t too hard to fit just more time consuming, took me a long time ! Id almost say go for the dragon v-mount because they all involve removing all the plastic and rad and repositioning it all.

Give me a shout once you get the profec fitted i\'ll pm you some settings to get you started on the right track !

Make sure you get a decent FMIC with spaced out fins as your rad temps will go up if you are restricting the air to it. Not that i have one but thats what i hear .
a V-mount is the best as clean cold air goes to both... but much more expensive though.

No need just go straight to Radtech they will supply the rads cheaper!  It was never Ross\' design so there is no need to feel guilty ;)

The rad is a great design though and would be a good investment if you ever deside to come back to this thread again saying now I want 500bhp :D

Whats always bothered me about that vmount is the pipes

Because those bends are not smooth curves, thats terrible for flow. I would always go for something with totally smooth curves - you\'ll loose less pressure that way...

Ta, Paul.

You still get some pretty heavy curves with the FMIC plus the pipes are longer too so the charge has to travel much greater distances.

Shaun

I\'d love to see if the v-mount suffers more from heat soak off the radiator and engine though !

I\'m not saying Vmounts are worse than front mounts, i\'m saying that vmount is a bad design. If the pipes were smooth curves not chunky angular parts welded together, it would be a better design.

having had a quick look at intercoolers V mount is an arm and a leg and quite an expensive job to fit i cant justify it to myself, can get an XS power SMIC for £190 and is cheaper to fit, Trust FMIC is around £430 and a fair job fitting costs wise.
only seen a couple of RX\'s on here using XS power so dont know how good they are.
with the cost of spraying new bonnet ,fitting boost controller and a remap to come think i will go down the SMIC route sure its still better than stock IC and i dont have temperature problem never goes above 94 degrees in slow traffic normal running is 82 to 83 degrees going by commander
Thanks for views given

Right, I\'d go for about 0.8 till pip sees the car, don\'t go too crazy until you know that it can fuel what you want.

My current settings are :

LOW (about 0.65bar)
Set - 10%
Gain - 13%
Set gain - 0.55
Warning - 0.80
Lower - 10%
Peak - ON

HI (About 0.98bar)
Set - 39%
Gain - 22%
set gain - 0.76
Hi - 1.15
Lower - 15%
Peak - ON

Start with the low setting on both and then find a nice straight road with a roundabout both ends, get the car in 3rd and do a Power run from about 3k to 7.5k watching the boost (or get a passenger along) rise. It should be stable and shouldn\'t spike at the beginning. If it does spike the set gain may be set too high.

Do it in very small jumps and then find what you want.

Don\'t overdo it, keep a very close eye on injector dutys on your pfc too and don\'t go over 85% anywahere in the rev range, more likely to be in the higher rpm points.

PLEASE DON\'T GO TOO FAR AND POP YOUR ENGINE DUE TO TOO MUCH BOOST. THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE AND MAY BE DIFFERENT FOR EACH CAR.

Hope it helps and you will have fun finding the settings :3gears-rh

Agree on the greddy profec b spec II, was recommended also to me.

I\'ve got HKS RS induction (have a headlamp air duct feed for colder air), HKS 76mm downpipe, KnightSport hiflow cat midsection and HKS Hiper cat back box, SARD 280ltr fuel pump and 850cc secondary injectors, all mapped by a Apexi PowerFC.
Haven\'t had it dyno\'d but I\'d expect about 350bhp ?
Not sure if this figure is correct or what to expect figures-wise for at the wheels ?

IC is probably the next thing on my list, apart from better brakes !

Dont know about those 2 but not happy with fit on the XS SMIC i got sure that pipes & IC were for another model, pipes have been cut/welded to fit, bonnet only just shuts, induction kit is squeezed in,strut brace touches the pipe at left side, right side has washers under fastening bolt on brace to lift off pipes as was pushing it down and had to use HKS pipe i had on before to get it something like square.expect Pip at WGT to say its an abortion or laugh - very disappointed :reallymad suppose i got what i paid for a false economy

Nice, I had to lift my strut brace up with the greddy elbow to get it to fit, just one of those things. Will help to stop the engine rocking under heavy throttle ! Devil ref i\'d expect about 290-300 at the wheels. I\'ve got slightly bigger scondarys (1200\'s) and run happy on 1 bar and get about 320 at the hubs and 380 at the Flywheel !

I made 322 atw on stock twins, with WI and the rest @ 1 bar boost.  Blew the tubs shortly after.  Now I have gone single and it is infinitely better

The stock tubs don\'t like being runover stock boost levels for too long, as I found out

Not only this but because they are so small (in comparison to a nice fat single) they heat the air up a lot more which can\'t be good for the engine

If you want MORE power, I would with the benefit of experince recommend you think about going single.  IMHO the stock twins are not work much more than 320 atw.

And when you go single, trust me you don\'t feel like you need more..  I have been running on the low setting of 0.8 bar and it is more than enough infinitely better than the stock twins

You can get a HKS twin spark for less than that (pm me). Im making 320atw running at 0.95bar. I\'ve topped out the turbos, but they seem to be ok for the minute. Insurance is usually a bigger headache with a big single.

simon
only want short bursts for drag strip, sure i read someone on here runs stock twins and pulls something like 380 rwhp ,must be in a table here - i would be happy (for now LOL ) with 340rwhp.Have a desire to stay twins, dont know why just got it in my mind - engines nice & strong year ago it got 8.4 fronts and 8.3 rears on compression test at reworx
Thanks for input mate, appreciated - maybe in the future will consider singles but dont want to throw a shed load of £££££££££ just now at car

380rwhp was John\'s "Warthog" car and he had extensive work done to get it at to stage! e.g using cosmo engine parts etc
