Title: Speedo Problem
Post by: Nick23 on June 20, 2006, 05:40:42 PM
Hi,

My Speedo doesnt work :( It registers random speeds, like 20mph when im doing 30-40 and then if I accelerate it doesnt change! if i\'m sitting on the motorway it does creep to higher speeds but it\'s completely wrong?!?!

Does anyone know what could be at fault?

It\'s driving me mad having to use the tomtom to tell my speed.

The car is a 1994 Type R with KPH speedo converted to MPH.

*bump*

Anyone had experience of this problem, or any pointers maybe?

I am experiencing the same problem on my \'96 Type RS import, only had it a few weeks and only noticed this the day after buying it.

Its been converted to use a MPH speedo, but under-reads and never goes past 50MPH (even when I\'m at the top of 4th gear!).

I am the first UK owner of this recent import.

Any ideas guys?

Probably a sticky speedo - common problem. Mine would overread/underread (Can\'t remember which) I just couldn\'t rely on mine. Swapped it for a replacement, and has been spot on since.

The Speedo Converet Might Be Faulty, Take It Out And See If You Have The Same Problem

Just got my car back, Your right nikp turned out it was a faulty speedo!
Replaced and all working fine... But how accurate is the FD\'s speedo? Mine seems to be reading slightly fast compared to gps, could be the 18\'s I suppose?

I have a spare speedo converter/delimiter chip that came with the speedo I bought if yours turns out to be faulty.

Hi

I had an identical problem..  I went to Rotechnics and guess what..it was the converter what converts original kilometres to miles ( mine is a jap import) what packed up..

take it off, reconnect and see if your speedo is working OK, you will ofcourse have the incorrect speed...

Regards,
Michaelb

I think I\'ll take a look into the chip at the weekend then and see how I go from there first, ta very much for the pointer Michael.

If the chip is the problem, then Nick23 that would be great if you can help out with a replacement.

Much appreciated guys,
Dan

I\'ve had to delay investigating this problem until this coming weekend, so I shall keep you posted as to the outcome.

Cheers guys.

Well, I finally got round to investigating this problem today.

I removed the clock console to get access to the converter chip, (easy after a quick search for a how to on here) then disconnected the harness plugs and put the console to one side. I decided to take the converter chip out of the equation and reconnected the wiring as standard.

Went for a test run and the speedometer is now reading accurately, in MPH (as confirmed against the GPS mph reading on my sat nav). The trip counter is also counting in miles correctly.

So I\'m left thinking there must be some other converter elsewhere, perhaps the gearbox end? I couldn\'t see another one behind the dash..

I do have an Apexi Power FC, am I right in thinking that this will lift the 112mph limit?

Cheers,
Dan.
