Title: Blow off valve adjustment??
Post by: Jono FD3 on June 19, 2006, 08:00:59 PM
I was driving mine today and noticed for the first time that the BOV had a super cool rally car sound to it!!! the only thing is it only makes this noise at about 6psi boost!! the BOV is adjustable, but I have left it alone because there were no instructions with the valve when I bought it new just stickers!!! :2Rolleyes on the add they said it was an adjustable multy stage fluttering BOV but under power I have only ever heard a single dump of pressure like the bailey units!!!

What would happen if I screw in the bolt on the top (which is wound out along way at the moment) ????????????

Please throw some light on it as I dont want to blow up anything, but I want the COOL rally sound BOV at 6000rpm & 11psi!!!

Thanks in advance

Taken from the Turbosmart website.

The “flutter” noise reported by many excited enthusiasts may sound good but is actually very unhealthy for the turbo. The “flutter” occurs when upon shutting the throttle, air caught between the free-spinning turbo and the shut throttle. The consequent back pressure forces the air back through the turbine blades. This process, more commonly called “cavitation” places enormous loads on the turbo and can lead to premature wear of the turbo bearings and other load-bearing components. The cavitation or “flutter” can be fixed by either fitting a blow-off valve onto a system that hasn’t got one, or making sure the blow-off valve is matched to the output of the turbo and is not working outside its flow capacity and ensuring the blow-off valve is set up correctly.

OK...... I know it has a flutter sound as when I was driving through a narrow bridge it produced the same sound but you could hardly hear it, at litteraly 2psi!!!

Any help on setting it up correctly would be apreciated.

I think whats happening is the flutter noise (that you like) is being caused by incorrect opperation of the BOV i.e. not opening when it should.

If you really want the flutter, disconnect the BOV completely and plug the pipe. However, there is tell of stress on the turbine blades doing this.

If you adjust the BOV so its working as it should, you should hear no flutter at all.

Cheers, Paul.
