Hi folks,
Wondering if anyopne can shead anylight on a problem that reared its head on Friday on the way to a magazine photo shoot.
I was sitting in heavy traffic, which my FD doesnt normally mind. Water temps on the GReddy gauge were 90 when an awfull smell and a bit of dark smoke popped up from the RH side of the bonnet. I pulled over to note the airpump was weeping a bit of water.
Cooled the car down with some water and topped the levels up (got a water leak from the expansion tank breather pipe so im used to this at the moment).
Can drives fine but the airpump makes a scraping noise. Is it the bearings?
Hope you can help
Chris
does sound like bearings gone, dont forget it probably 10 years old.
Hi Chris,
This happened to me mate, after driving like that for a few days trhe airpump seized and the belt snapped as a result. Couldn\'t drive home as this belt also drives the water pump...
Sounds like you need to replace or remove depending on your exhaust ecu set up?
Cheers
Donato
I have a spare air pump that was working fine, if you like!? :)
Cheers for the sound and quick advise there lads, as always!!! :Thumbs-up
Bloomin heck Don, sounds like a had a lucky escape!
Think iĺl leave it on, as I always seem to rely on the aircon in one way or another. Whether its to keep me cool, or control the fan on low speed keeping the motor cool!
Ah, Mr Nick.....how much you looking for bud, be gentle!!! ;)

Thats a point bud, in fact shes a 92 K plate, so its probs even olderrrrrrrrr!
Will be giving you a shout RE those window rubbers in a week or two.
Chris
Oops, just one more thing (in a Columbo style!)
When I replace the pump will she have to be re-gassed? And should I just go ahead and change the belt too? Doesnt look too bad a job, and may tackle the alternatore while im on (polish it up and all that).
Chris
Hang on, hang on - i was just about to reply about how much i would sell it for (Not much!), but, are you sure we\'re talking about the air PUMP, and not the air con COMPRESSOR?
The air pump just pumps air into the cat, thus reducing emissions. No bleeding of fluids or anything else is required. Where abouts on the engine was the offending article?
i thought that - but then it struck me in the first post ...
"the air pump was leaking water"
sounds like the AC not the Air pump ??
pic with a big circle round the item would prob help at this moment intime :D :D
Stu
Yeah, i think i\'d be a bit worried if my air pump had water in it!
Here\'s a picture of roughly where the air pump is, and the air con compressor is. (Ignore the round red circle!)
If it is the aircon pump i have one you can have chris...
efo the air pump lads. Sits to the left of the alternator. Not sure bout water either, was just a dribble comming from the centre???
hmmm....dunno. But the thing to the left of the alternator is deffo the air pump. Yup, i have one of those going, was working fine before removed. Can have for not a lot of money! :)
Quick fix, just unplug the airpump, that way it wont spin. The small connector is on top of the air pump.
Mine made a barking noise too whenever I was driving or idling and then pulling off.
Disconnected it and all was well.
The air pumps dont like the hot air when sat in stationary traffic. Its especially bad when the standard air box is removed. Thats the main cause of the bearings going.
As gmogle says, just disconnect it, then just use it for MOT emissions tests.
Cheers for the tips lads. Will disconect for temp fix.
Nik, can you please PM me the asking price for the airpump. May as well sort it by replacing it.
Ta all :)
Chris
