Hi guys,
I\'ve got a decat pipe which i want to fit this weekend, but i thought i\'d better check with someone in the know exactly what i have to undo / contend with.
I\'ve attached a picture of some mysterious bolts which look like they might need undoing. Anyone know what i actually need to undo under there apart from the obvious bits?
Cheers, Paul.
ps. this is part of the decat pipe - i think the end which connects to the downpipe - is it supposed to be angled like that?
what make is it? does it have any bolt holes?
Nope the ends should be flat. not angled.
Not sure about the bolts though. Sorry

Its japspeed and yes it does have bolt holes.
Bought it from ebay here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/92-01-MAZDA-RX7-FD3S-TURBO-DECAT-DE-CAT-EXHAUST-PIPE_W0QQitemZ8075142508QQcategoryZ38786QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).

Crap. Thats the end of that then! :(
The downpipe came free with this, but its for the american car - i expect its been designed to work with that... Arse arse arse.
Ta, Paul.
evening
I believe the bolts you\'re looking at just hold the thermal casing onto the CAT. Mine didn\'t even have it!
as for the angled flange not a clue as all the flanges I worked with were flat.
sorry bud
Gareth
...actually, thats a little bit dodgy isn\'t it? The ebay guy is selling it as a decat pipe, but it only fits with the free included downpipe but the downpipe is for a LHD car...
Hmmm.
Cheers, Paul.
Those sytems and set up on \'E-bay\' are cheap for a reason...
It always cost you more in the end, spend proper in the first place!

Well, it was £100 after postage, so thats hardly cheap!
Ta, Paul.
Not that I want to be an "arse" or something but a good rule to live by is..
"If you buy quality, you only cry once" Sorry it doesn\'t fit though.
Well, i\'ve just spoken to the bloke who sold it to me and he\'s adament that ppl have fitted this mid-section with no problems to the stock downpipe.
Seemed like a nice chap - offered to give me a refund if it doesn\'t fit.
Just want to double check with you guys first - the downpipe\'s flange faces vertically and horizontally flat, pointing exactly towards the rear of the car?
Cheers, Paul.
Mine sure did mate on a UK car. UK\'s have a pre cat which is what I bolted the new exhaust to but would imagine the original cat would be the same for UK and JAP.
In a word I\'m pretty sure that it should be as you said the flanges should sit flat.

TBH, thats what i would expect too. However, i even contacted japspeed directly and they also say that it will fit ok onto the stock components. Guess i\'m going to have to have a proper go at it. :/
Cheers, Paul.
Hey,
If you do get stuck with it if you measure it all up I\'m sure you could get a adapter made to sit between the 2 with an angled flange and a flat flange. The smaller this is the better though else it will push the rest of the system back however far this part is wide. If it does come to an adapter type jobby if you don\'t know anwhere I\'ve mate who machines stuff out of stainless who could probably do it for pound notes ;)
Actually looking at your pic again the angle is very slight so you may be able to come up with something. Alternatively cut the angled flange off and have it welded on flat :)
Cheers

Thanks Garath, thats very kind of you to offer! :) My welding skills are non-existant!
Good idea about the adapter - i thought of bending it, but discounted that idea because it would lower the exhaust too much (or raise it into roof of the floor, depending which way around it is!).
I let you know how i get on! :)
Cheers, Paul.
Yay!
It looks like this story is going to have a happy ending! :) I remembered i still have my old rusty HKS cat-back in the shed, so i got it out to mock up the exhaust on the ground to see if it would fit.
Low and behold, the catback\'s flange has exactly the same funny angle on it! Horrah! On the other end of the decat pipe, the flange sits flat to the pipe which will meet up with the downpipe perfectly.
Now all i have to do is fit it! :D
Cheers, Paul.
Hey Paul,
Nice to hear it ended without tears and bloody\'d knuckles :)

I\'m gonna try to fit it tonight, so i\'m not totally out of the woods yet, bloody knuckles wise! :)
Cheers, Paul.
I gave up undoing the bolts holding the catback to the cat and just undid from the pre-cat and dropped it out in one long section.
Plenty of WD might help but I\'d already buggered the nuts :S

I\'ve been pretty lucky bolt wise - i already changed the catback about a month ago, and those particular bolts were super easy to undo. I\'m gonna coat all bolts in WD40 though, just to make sure! :)
Cheers, Paul.
Hi there,
I just finished fitting a decat pipe but i had a couple of problems:
Firstly the cat temp sensor nuts were rusted through and i couldn\'t undo them and ended up stripping the bolts. So i snapped the sensor off at the metal part. Of course now when i start the car, i get the heat sensor light turn on. What can i do about that? :Hammer
Also, the brace which went over the cat now doesn\'t fit because the decat pipe is so wide! I assume this brace is neccessary to stiffen the chassis - is there an aftermarket brace which would fit? :xconfused
Cheers, Paul.
Hey Paul,
Sorry but not got a clue on the heat sensor as I was looking for it when I did mine last weekend and couldn\'t even see it. No heat sensor light coming on so guessing it\'s tucked up out the way already.
I had the same issue with the brace. Whilst I was out of the unit my mate decided that cutting one of the 2 parts of the brace off would be ok as 1 is better than none!
I\'ve not had any answers from people about how important it is but would also be interested to know.
Personally I think I\'d have prefered to have spaced it out somehow and maintained both bit of metal.
Cheers

I\'ve ordered a replacement sensor from Jimmys.

I don\'t think it would even fit then for me!

Yeah, i\'m gonna try that, but i have a feeling its *way* off. I\'m surprised this doesn\'t come up more often when folks fit decat pipes.
Cheers, Paul.
Yeah me too. The exhaust I fitted is a monster though. I reckon it must be 4" pipework then the midpipe section goes out to about 5". Sounds nice though. Just gotta get rid of a couple of rattles on tick over. I know what\'s doing it, it\'s a jubilee clip I messed up that\'s on the pre-cat cover. :(
The sooner I can afford a PFC and a downpipe the better!

Wow 4"! That really is a monster! I\'m not going to bother with a downpipe since the imports don\'t have a precat anyway - and plus i hear its a total total bitch to remove.
There is a PFC going here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/APEXI-POWER-FC-COMMANDER-MAZDA-RX7-FD-FD3S-13B-FCON_W0QQitemZ8075915698QQihZ019QQcategoryZ72205QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) for a reasonable amount. :Thumbs-up
My RX sounds like a pretty tinny on start up, i think its because the stock catback is a bit poo for sound - hopefully the decat will change the note over time...
Cheers, Paul.
