Hi All
Could some one kindly post a link or send me a pm with a 96 RX7’s complete “under the bonnet†engine diagram.
I am primarily interested in the technical names of the parts, hoses, tubes, tanks etc.
Today I could smell the coolant â€" I finally open the bonnet and there was a tiny hose pipe practically off a sort of a tank just in the middle of the radiator with a tap on tap saying “do not open†and a huge hose to the left of it
What was that ?

Michaelb
The tank by the sounds of it is the AST - Air Seperation Tank.
Hi
Thanks for that. There was a yellow water leaking from one of the tiny upper hoses which was almost of with out a clip...Should I get a clip for that ?

Michaelb
PS It is the size of say oil filter, right ?

Oh yes, there should be a jubilee or spring clip on that!!!
Check the hose for any splits etc, if it\'s all ok, just slip it back on with some new jubilee clips and nip them up.

Before you do anything, make sure the car is cold! Then be very carefull as the stock tanks are renowened for being brittle, the plastic pipe can snap of just removing the pipe!! Remove the pipe slowly put a jubilee clip replace and tighten carefully...
Check also the tank for hairline cracks as its not always the pipe...
Cheers

Thanks for that. I will get a jubilee clip today.

Do you know if any of UK vendors that sell a selection of decent hoses say in red or blue for a 96 RX7?
I would not mind changing them all for new ones. The engine was rebuilt by RXMotors around 2.5 years ago (got the car after that) but I am not convinced that the hoses were changed.
They could be 9 years old…

I did all mine when i took the engine out, i bought them from demon tweeks but that wasnt cheap!
I think some of the vendors might do it, try Gary at rotaryart...
Might be a good idea to replace the stock AST tank for an aluminium AST tank, they are not cheap (abt £100) but a lot more reliable, i had two burst on me so went down the aluminium route and (touchwood!) never had a problem since.
Hi
Many thanks for that. I had a look at rotaryart site and they do have a hose kit but no red or blue colour only purple?!?!
I have sent them an e-mail to see if they will fit the 96 Jap import I have.
Re Aluminium AST - good idea - I guess vendors might do it again..

PS What does the AST really do ?

The AST removes tiny air bubbles in the coolant that could create cavitation in the water pump and stop the coolant from cooling the engine so efficiently.
You could try this kit: this (http://www.nfauto.co.uk/breather_tank.htm) Does the same thing, and is slightly cheaper.
Looks like a nice piece of kit, check the pressure rating though, that cap is 1.1 bar, not sure if the FD is that high? (can\'t remember). Mind you if the cap size is the same i see no reason why you couldn\'t buy it an use a stock cap if the ratings are different...
I think most of the vendors do it, i got mine from Pip at WGT.
Yeah, cap ratings will almost certainly be differnet, but i should think the standard FD cap is transferable
The air bubbles are usually formed in the water pump as a result of cavitation. The AST then supposedly removes them.
Hi
Many thanks for the useful advice. I almost learn someting new every time I go on the forum...
