Title: will a second gen NA flywheel fit a turbo engine?
Post by: dubber91 on June 15, 2006, 09:06:20 PM
Its just if the plans come together for the turbo motor in the beetle, will i have to remake a new turbo II flywheel centre with shrunk-fit VW starter ring? Or is the centre of an 13b flywheel esentially the same for all models?

tis the counterweight that will be the problem I think :(

why? currently the counterweight is off an auto tranny and is bolted to the flywheel back.....

thats a bit different then, the standard flywheels have an integral counterweight. What you need to find is one from a Turbo II to match the rotors in your new engine (I Think TurboIInuttah has one!)  you could also make back the cost by selling me the one for you EGI engine LoL

Right lemmie get my head around this....
I have currently used one from an auto box as otherwise the manual are counterweighted i n the gearbox...correct?
This means i should be able to take this one off and fit one from a turbo II auto correct?
Then i sell you the one from my NA?

Is that all present and correct? LOL!

yes, the flywheel and the counterweight are seperate, the counterweight is unique to each engine and your flywheel should bolt straight on to a TurboII counterweight (don\'t forget to make sure you get one from the correct series, although I\'m not sure if the rotor weights changed)

The manual ones have a counterweight built into the flywheel itself (no seperate counterweight at all,  the taper is built into the centre of the flywheel. Hence why I originally said that the flywheels will not interchange.

right well heres a pic of the flywheel...

its a mazda centre with a VW starter ring grafted onto the outside......The counterweight is bolted onto the rear of the flywheel (so ya cant see it)

Is it a simple case of finding a turbo II counterweight and bolting it on instead?

I\'m pretty sure it is, someone who makes lightweight flywheels would be the best to ask as they will know if the bolt pattern is the same on all the counterweights. I expect it is.
