my air con blows out the same temperature air as the normal fan does, so i\'m guessing i need a re-gas for the summer. i have searched on here and found some info on the type of gas required, and that the system and gas was updated on FDs at some point around \'93-\'95. i have yet to find a definate answer however.
does anyone know exactly which gas i need for my \'94 FD R2? i have been quoted about £50 from a jap specialist garage which seems pretty good.
cheers! :WaveBye
You don\'t really need a jap specialist for re-gassing. Ideally, you\'d need an air-con specialist. The air con in the FD is pretty standard stuff for an air con man, so no additional specialist knowledge is required. He would probably also be able to advise on the gas required - if you get a good one, they do know their stuff.
I used one to de-gas my system (Cost £30), and he really new his stuff. Told me all sorts of stuff about it. Also gave me a quote for re-installing the system with a v-mount intercooler and rad setup!
They Changed From The Illigal Gas \'r12\' Half Way In 93.
You Have To Use R13a Now
If You Have The R12. You Have To Get It Converted. This Costs Doller
Your Engine Bay Should Giive You The Info You Kneed
which gas was an unknown on mine 93, also. so i have got a DIY cannister, which i have used with success for a year, type of gas is one that apparently is compatable with both types R12 and R13a this one is R413a 1kg, think mine has a very slight leak, due to top mine up again now which is twice from one 1kg can.
Bob
If you ever get a leak on a car with R12 DO NOT!! smoke near it.
R13 is not good for you but R12 will kill you if its Burnt then you inhale the vapour.
Apologise for slight hijack but is aircon related.....When I pull up after a drive I get a substantial amount of water dripping out from underneath the car directly beneath the passenger seat location. I have only just started noticing it and as it is pure cool water (ie no antifreeze) can be nothing to do with the cooling system. It keeps dripping for ages after the car has stopped and forms quite a large pool. The aircon seems to work fine and I imagine maybe its condensation from the aircon system but it seems a bit odd to be pouring out where it does - like between a join in two panels...there is no visible pipe or anything....does anybody else get this? I am not even sure if it is a problem.... :xconfused
Every car I have had with aircon has left puddles like that. It\'s just the water in the air condensing as the air is chilled, and draining out the bottom.
Keith
We had a moment last year on the way to the Ring where everyone stopped and trails of fluid started making their way down the hill we were on. Air con does this on all cars, cold metal condenses water in the air which then drips on the floor, don\'t worry about it.
I turn my aircon on several times during the winter, yet mine has failed too. Not sure if Mazda did it when they took the belt off to remove my airpump, but hey-ho. They want £85+VAT for a regas and system leak test, round about the norm so the prices above are pretty good.
Mart.
The air con ports are different sizes for each type of gas so you can\'t get it wrong. The size of one of the ports on an R12 system is similar in size to that of the valves used in wheels.
r12 re-gas you can still do but very hard to come by and will cost a little more to do it and as stated above dangerous to use reason why it was banned
no one will regass an r12, you have to convert it first. my place do it
sorry to ressurect a dead thread, but i can\'t take the heat any more :(
my air con doesn\'t blow any cooler than the normal blower (\'93 import), so i suspected it needed regassing. i noticed dixons renault dealer had a sign out saying they would look at any make/model air con for free, and service with degas, regas and pollen filter change for £89 so took it down this morning. unfortunately they said it uses the old gas and they can\'t do it, and even if i could source the gas their machines aren\'t able to regas it? :( they also told me they\'d phoned around and the only local place they knew of that could convert it to the newer type charged £1200 !!!!!!
so i was wondering if anybody know where i could try to get the old gas from, and whether i would be capable of doing it myself? (or does it require specialist kit like renault service implied?)
the thread\'s not dead-i have just been away! i still want to get this sorted this week. sorry-can\'t help with the old gas-mine has the newer stuff. try and air con search in google-there are quite few options. i\'m gonna phone a mazda dealer and see what they can do.
Juz
I had mine done last year, Andrew over at Jimmy\'s organised it for me and it was in the region of £200 or so. That was a old to new gas change.
Seeing as he is Norwich it may be worth giving him a bell to see where he had it done.
Si
Topped (or rather re-gassed ) mine last week, diy job, you dont need to convert it at all, you use a gas that is compatable with the R12 system and which is compatable with R12 gas (if there are any dregs left in it) which is
R413a my 1-k can cost £58.75 as i already had the flexy adaptor and tap connector from last year, the system takes 600g, just over half the can, all availiable from Autokool, job done. wonderfull!
Bob
Getting mine done next week and the engineer said that really this conversion for £200 etc is a bit of a con as there is a gas that is compatible with the old valves etc.
Now I don\'t know the ins and outs until he comes round but rest assured I will post up what happens as soon as it gets done. He has quoted £50 including checking system for leaks etc so if everything does go well that will save us a bit of dollar as cheapest I\'ve found so far for conversion has been £225 cash price:eek
Cheers

:Thumbs-up Maybe that is the gas he will use then you type quicker than me it seems:Laugh
Looked at autokool site, should the gas be R134a and not R431a. Can\'t see a ref. to R431a
Sorry guys edited my post, it\'s R413a
Bob
this may help somone
before i sold my rex i bought some 12a adaptors to convert to r413a valves
they will help with the new machines that most companies use
i don\'t need these any more so up for grabs £10 plus past for both high and low adaptors email me at chris@yoco.co.uk
whoa! right, i\'m extra confused now :D bare with me...
so my \'93 air con system has R12 gas, and newer cars post \'93 have R134a gas. i got that :) this is where i\'m getting a bit lost though...
according to most of the replies above, you can get R413a gas and 12a adapters that allow you to top up an R12 system, and the R413a can mix with any R12 dregs fine. the onlything i can find on the Autokool online store from a search for "R413a" is this (http://www.car-air-conditioning-supplies.com/carshop/product.php?productid=233&cat=0&page=1) which i\'m not really sure what it does, but alas i can find no R413a gas to actually do the regassing with?
elsewhere in their online store I found this (http://www.car-air-conditioning-supplies.com/carshop/product.php?productid=516&cat=254&page=3) which claims to be an "R12 to R134a conversion and recharge kit". this implies that for £60 i can have a kit that will allow the new type of gasses to go straight into an old system!? (on a sidenote, i can\'t be clear as to how many grammes of gas this includes? it has 55g of "refridgerant" in one thing and 12oz of refill refridgerant - does this compare to the 600g needed by our cars or the 1kg offered in the other kits?)
next up, i then found for £50, this (http://www.car-air-conditioning-supplies.com/carshop/product.php?productid=379&cat=254&page=3) which i think is the banned R12 "refridgerant service kit"!? 1kg of the stuff. and i quote "no need to retrofit".
then, to top it all off in the Autokool "services" page they say "For the older R12 systems it is now impossible, due to environmental legislation, to offer this gas type. Our solution is to offer a true \'drop in\' replacement to R12 known as RS24. This refrigerant solves the problem and considerable expense of having to completely retrofit your system to work with R134a refrigerant." RS24???? what the hell is this lol!
i am completely and utterly 100% baffled. ffs i might just drive to derby and tell them to do what they like as long as it works and costs me less than £100 :D
p.s. i just realised i might also be getting confused about gas and refridgerant. are these the same thing?

thanks si, unfortunately i finished uni and am back home now, a good 3.5 hours drive away! wish i\'d got this sorted whilst i was in norwich would have been a damn sight easier taking it to jimmy\'s.
Hi Juz,
Just to update had my old system regassed with a drop in replacement (no need to convert) for £50.
Works wonderful and freezing cold air coming out only problem is that it is now raining and cold so can\'t feel the benefit! Typical
Eddie, Could you post the contact details of who you used for this please.

don\'t think they can do the drop in thing though, just a re-gas. not too far from us.
