I had a search around, but didnt really come up with much.
I won this Momo steering wheel and boss on e-bay a while ago. I want to make sure I have all the bits I need to fit it before getting half way through the job and getting stuck! There was no wire connections with it so assume I will have to make up something to get the horn working - there is a little spade connector on the horn button. Can anyone tell me how many wires come through the centre of the boss and where they connect.
Also, Is disconnecting the battery enough before dealing with an airbag removal?
I can see this whole job blowing up in my face!!!
Thanks in advance for any help.
Martin
I can\'t speak for the u.k. but i know in some countries (nz/aus included) it is illegal to replace an airbag steering wheel with a non airbag one. might pay to get this checked out first.
From memory my momo had one wire for the horn.
Mind how you go with that Martin, i\'m told there is a backup battery for the airbag system somewhere, and it\'s not wize to prod around with a multytester

I unbolted the steering wheel from my U/K car several times over the years, all I used to do was disconnect the battery pump the brake pedal to loose all the power in the car then disconnect the bag via the nuts under the back off the wheel
You can remove the airbag, but you must also remove the bulb in the dash for the airbag check system otherwise it will fail at MOT time I believe.
Clive - Does the centre of the steering wheel with the airbag in just pull off after you undo the nuts?
I think as Clive has done this a few times it\'s obviously safe to do it as he has,
I think what spooked me about touching mine was the following reply from Chris, Mazda mech,
The airbag was fitted to the uk vehicles and I believe only the type X in the early import vehicles, this changed on the circa 96 variants.
The airbag systek carries out a series of self tests every time you switch on the ignition (checks resistances etc)
The system has a built in voltage storage, the theory being if you clip the side of the car and detach the battery you can still activate the airbag from its own source of power.
Once the battery is disconnected you should leave the system for something like 30 mins before carrying out any continuity checks on the system to prevent firing the bag, although if you are looking to diconnect a sensor in the engine bay you should be ok.
The orientation and mounting of the sensors is very important, as the way they operate is a steel ball being held by a magnet, on impact, the force is sufficient to dislodge the ball from the magnet which will then complete a circuit.
In the early days of airbags there were several cases of people/mechanic fatalities by miss trigering of airbags using test lamps incorrectly
I have a wiring diagram detailing the system that you can borrow if this helps.

Personally i am happy to have an airbag on mine and will not change the wheel because i also have cruise on it,
