Title: not starting after refitting new engine
Post by: chris p on June 04, 2006, 06:30:11 PM
have just completed an engine swap on a mates fd, have fuel in the tank water oil etc but no supply to the fuel pump, we can hear all the relays clicking in and the fuse looks ok but...no supply to the pump.
The pump works with 12v direct to it off the battery via a small bit of wire, does the fd have any sort of fuel cutout switches or anything else in the circuti to it ??? :3Confused

Check circuit opening relay & fuel pump relay and 20 amp fuel pump fuse

where bouts is the circuit opening relay ? we have swapped the fuel pump relay in the fuseboard with one from mine but no luck so far and as said ..the fuse is still ok :S

does it have an alarm ? if it does shut all doors, boot etc. and arm and disarm the alarm. The alarm on my 323 does this everytime the battery is disconnected !

no, we have traced the fault now to something in the fuel pump circuit. Basically if we put a direct feed to the pump it runs fine (slightly high revs though due to it having 12v and not the correct 9v on idle etc). Power can be traced from battery to fuse in  drivers footwell (fine and ok) to pump relay at front of bonnet (clicks in fine) to pump relay under bonnet near the battery (also fine) but has no supply at pump resistor under mastercylinder, however this is connected to three of the pins on the relay board ( the relay near battery) and has a continuity reading of 6 ohms but at the actual resistor it falls to 1.3 ohms. Where do we go from here ???

replace resistor.

we tried shorting that out but still didnt start ! would shorting it out not help ? plus there isnt a voltage there at all with the key turned to the last click before cranking the engine over

Get a ground to the fuel pump from anywhere, and get another piece of wire connect it to the blue & red wire terminal on the fuel pump relay to the positive terminal of the fuel pump, does this activate the pump ?
yes? if so
Try the same thing to the white and red wire terminal on the fuel pump.
If the fuel pump activates from the blue and red terminal but not from the white and red terminal replace the fuel pump relay.

If the fuel pump is not activated by either terminal go back one step and connect wire from fuel pump positive terminal to the solid blue wire terminal on the circuit opening relay. Does this activate the pump? if so replace either the fuel pump relay or check the blue and red wire from circuit opening relay to the fuel pump relay.
If it does not activate the pump, run a wire from 20 amp fuel pump fuse in drivers footwell to the positive terminal of the fuel pump and see if this activates the pump, if yes the fault is with your circuit opening relay, if it still doesn\'t activate the pump the fault is within your ignition switch and you can call me tomorrow and I\'ll tell you how to bypass it. If it still does not work you may have damaged one of two wires going to your ecu either the blue and white wire on the 22 pin connector to ecu, or the blue and brown wire going to the same 22 pin connector. If those wires are ok and not damaged then the fault is with ecu.
Hope it all makes sense off to bed now.

Ok we have been through the checklist,

If we runa wire to the pump from the fuse in the drivers footwell the pump works.

If we run a wire from the Black and blue wire on the circuit opening relay (ours in black and blue not red and blue) it doesnt work but it does if we run a wire from the red and white wire on the relay.

The wire from the circuit opening relay to the fuel pump relay (blue and black not blue and red ) is ok as i have done a continuity check on it and is fine. However a wire from the fuel pump relay on any pin to the pump again does not force it into action. We swapped the relay from my car for the fuel pump relay and still does not work (but both relays are fine on my car) so we are stumped !!

Any sort of wiring diagram available for this?
 :xconfused

Then it sounds like the ecu is not controlling the circuit opening relay and or the fuel pump relay, which is why when you test manually to a 12v feed that bypasses the intelligence of the ecu it works. Try the other ecu in the car and see if it works.

ok we seem to have found this finally (cheers again for the phone advice brian ) looks like a dodgy connector in the base of the circuit opening relay.

Red and white wire in base has 10v when ignition is on, when the relay is linked out (ie wire put from red & white wire connector to the blue and black wire , which i now know as the feed to the fuel pump relay) it works fine. However put the relay back in and nothing happens again....so using 4 bits of wire we extended the spade connectors in the circuit opening relay base to the relay which we had hold of and ....success !!!

Just gotta get some more connectors now and make it a permanent thing :)
