Title: brakes painted red
Post by: michaelb on June 04, 2006, 04:10:54 PM
Hi All

I would like to paint my brakes (visible through my alloys) in red.

Has any one done it and where would one buy the right paint?

Regards,
Michaelb

Got mine from Halfrauds.

Its called Brake Caliper paint, there were 3 colours if I remember, silver, black or red.

Tips:
Allow a week for your car to be off the road while this is being done.
Jack the car up, remove wheel, make sure you use a wire brush and remove as much of the dust from the calipers where you are painting. I had a caliper kit from halfrauds (left from another project but thats a different story so I only used the cleaning solvent.) that had some solvent you put on first which helps break down the dirt first. Give yourself at least 15 to 30 mins cleaning the caliper with the brush. After brushing leave the car for about 30 mins and then its funtime.....painting !!

paint the caliper once, then go over it again, leave it overnight plus a day then put the wheel back on and move to the next wheel. You\'d be suprised how long it takes for this stuff to dry !!

It took me about a week but the results are great.
Cant beat red calipers on a black car !!!

Should look good on a white one too.

I did mine useing Hamerite. Red and white for the writing. Needed 2 coats for the red with a slight sanding between them to get rid of some of the runs. Then i carefully did the Mazda logo in white. Thought this would need 2 coats as well but looks fine after just the 1.

enamel paint works well as it sets harder with heat from brakes

gave mine 2 undercoats of grey after wire brushing - 15 minutes dry - then the gold, left about 2 hours to dry final coat, worth watching you put tyres back on same wheel they came off could have directional tyres on.whilst wheels off waiting for paint to dry worth cleaning inner of alloys and spraying them with anti brake dust

Thanks mate. Hamerite did take a while to dry so did it over 2 days. You could speed it up a bit by taking the car out for a drive and getting some heat in to the calipers to cure the paint but then you run the risk of getting dirt in the paint. The only bad point about using hamerite i found was that its very thick and when trying to do the small tricky bits you get small hair-like bits of paint which can get all over the place. I masked around the letters so as to not get the white on the red.
You can get Hamerite at any B&Q, Homebase... etc etc

Even with a red car i think you should go with red calipers. They just seem to look more sporty and functional somehow. But then thats just my oppinion :)

yup, thinking about it your prob right.
gold would hide the calpiers more,
green (yea was thinking about it) along with the rear towing eye
white would never stay white
red it is then

I did mine in silver with the mazda in red (i have a red car) i thought it looked quite good.
I have a set of porsche big reds to go on when i get the money together for the disks, not sure what colour to make them, think they might have to stay red.

That look pretty good and it goes with your alloys nicely

I have colour coded alloys ( white ) so I think red may go beter then silver

Hi All

I have painted my calipers red.  I went to B&Q got the paint and spent absolute hrs taking wheels off, rubbing with sand paper, painting…
No one told me it was such a hard work.  lol I am nacked !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some how the front ones look better and smother, maybe there is a lot more flat surface or I am paying the price for this: I could not take the back wheels off (tight screws) so I did it thru the alloys but it looks OK.
I will do a second coat another day

I will post a photo….

Thanks for all the advice

Michaelb
