Title: Carbon Bonnets?
Post by: Grizzly on June 03, 2006, 10:47:59 AM
I am toying with the Idea of fitting a Vented Bonnet to my FD as i\'m going with a V-Mount, Thing is i\'m a little Paraniod about the Fit.

I am thinking of Going for the Mazdaspeed one mainly becouse the gaps on the ones i\'ve seen have been good, But also i\'d like to use the OE catch but have been told that alot of MazdaSpeed bonnets don\'t have the bonnet catch on so would need Pins to hole it down. Does this sound about right?

Just out of Intrest what make is Considered the best Quality/Fit?

Cheers
Chris

I know Rotaryart do the scoot style, has sold a fair few over the last 3 years, think the fit is second to none and they are a vailable off the shelf :cheers

I can concur that the rotaryart scoot copy fits really well it isn\'t carbon though if thats what you are really after.

Is it true you need to use Pins with Carbon/Grp bonnets as the stock catch has been known to pull out?

Also do they put a Carbon Skin on the Alloy Bonnet frame or construct a complete new Bonnet?

They (being vented bonnets generally, not Gary\'s!) are usually a bit of carbon over a grp copy of the original frame. Fit (and quality of the grp/carbon finish) varies WILDLY (even with originals) and without pins they flap about rather scarily at speed :D I would say 50-75% of the ones I\'ve seen thru the garage are in the bad to really bad bracket. The one on my daily is particularly poor but it was on it when i got it and I dont have a stocker spare atm :o

In general would you say there is a Noticeable temp drop with a Vented bonnet? Or does it vary allot from the more Subtle bonnets (like a Mazdaspeed) to a more radical (like a Scoot)?

In the apllication you intend [\'V\' mount] I would have thought to get the full benifit of cooling the IC I would say you need one, I honestly dont know weather the more subtle bonnets are any better / worse than the wild.
If you could get hold of a second ali bonnet might be worth making your own vents to suit the V mount?
