Post by: chrisJDM on June 03, 2006, 10:23:49 AM
I heard a while back somewhere that the early model rx7s only had one oil cooler and it was only the higher model and later cars that had 2.  I have a 1992 (j Reg) FD with none of the extras.  Took off my front bumper yesterday and i have 2 oil coolers.  I will attach a pic to see if im not bein stupid lol

Twin oil coolers is a standard feature of all Type R models from 92 onwards I believe.  The Type S is the model that has the single oil cooler.  I have a 92 Type X (Sunroof, Cruise Control etc.) and that also has twin oil coolers.

How easy would it be to convert a single oil cooler setup to twin?  and would it be worth it?

Mine does say type rb special edition so the special edition bit might be why i have 2 coolers. From what i have been led to believe is that the type r came with bins instead of back seats.

As for converting it from 1 to 2 coolers i wouldnt know how hard it would be to do. I shouldnt think it would be too hard. Just make the piping longer and add the second cooler into it. I dont know how much benefit you would have from it though.

There are 2 versions of the Type R\'s (not including the RZ), The R1 and R2. Only the R2 had rear bins, the other has rear seats.

Quickest and esyest way to convert to twin coolers is: a) get a full set up off a type r that is being stripped (there seems to be a few unfortunatly!!) as all the oil feeds to the block are in the same place, its literaly another pipe bridging the 2 coolers from what I can see on mine!!! or b) mount another and instead of returning the outlet from the original to the block, send it to the second cooler, then pipe it back to the original return!!!

Is 2 coolers generally better ? What about a larger single one ?
