Title: What size of Drag Tyres are people using ???
Post by: shaunwil on May 30, 2006, 07:16:15 PM
After the good blast up the strip at the weekend i\'ve noticed that macky t\'s are now available in the uk :) What size tyres are people running with them ? I\'ve got a spare set of 16\'s and am looking at making use of the alloys !

Cheers in advance

I\'d be interested in this as well.  My traction issues were horendous at RS3 - I have a set of standard 16\'s that i\'m planning on putting on 2xslicks for dragging/track days and 2x normal tyres for track days

I had my tyres down to 14psi on sunday and was struggling for grip. Monday the grip was huge and the diff survived quite happy (got it all braced up) plus didn\'t launch higher than 4k.

Is it a given thing that if i swap to drag tyres i\'ll break my stock diff ?

Lowering pressure on radial tyres will be about as much use as a fart in a colander

Pretty much in the same way as a burnout on radials will lower your traction....

Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro : 26 x 10.5 x 15 (if you want to be street legal) On wider versions of these Street Eliminator cars are running down into the 8\'s

Perhaps a spool at the same time.

Speak to Lee @ LA Racing Parts they stock the MT Sportsman Pro\'s

What a load of bull.

I can post time slips to prove that lowering the pressure works with radials.

Shaun i think there is only one size that will fit on the stock rim. I can put you intouch with the right people to get them and give you real advice.
You have my email add

I launched at 4000 RPM with 16 psi tire presure and cut a 1.92 60ft on my first run.

big burn outs on road tires are a waste of time

I didn\'t do any monster burnouts. I just did small ones to get rid of all the stones off the inroad and the dust off the waiting line. I did notice alot of difference in grip between 32psi and 18, not much after.

Cheers Scot for the info :p

I\'ve spoken to lee to get a quote for some mickey t\'s in a given size with postage and they arn\'t too bad !

How many events will these last for ?? Or can you count the number of runs on two hands ?????

Cheers for all the info

I\'m posting from my experience crewing for a Super Pro ET Dragster and a couple of other pro cars; tyre pressure settings are critical with slicks but radials do not benefit from the same "wrinkle wall effect" hence lowering the pressure to say 11Lbs from 18 or 20 will give very little effect.  I\'ve run my own car on BFGoodrich T/A Drag Radials and MT Sportsman Pro\'s.  On the radials at a WRE Test Day we didn\'t notice any 60 foot differences between 22 and 14 PSI dropping in 2 PSI increments.  Taking 1.92 off a 60 foot time just by dropping radial tyre pressures seems a bit extreme, are there other factors that could have influenced it - how did you stage the car, was there any clutch slip on the first run, were both runs in the same lane on the same day, how was the ambient temp, etc etc...?

The benefit may come more from taking up some of the impact from the lunch allowing the car to react more effectivly rather than increasing the traction...

By no means am I an expert compared to those guys on Pro Mod teams but i\'ve raced in VWPro (FIA) and Quick (IDRC) classes.  Scott - what classes do you race in?

:god

Yeah I guess LA Racing parts wouldn\'t know anything about drag racing....

Anyways that\'s not really the point of this post...

I guess they only do one 16" size in the Sportsman Pro mostly because 16" is a weird rim size for a drag car.  Really it\'d be best if you could get a 15" set for the rear then you could choose from a wider variety...

I see what you are saying. But it does allow the tire to have a larger foot print.

runs were on the same track same day no other adjustments
