Decided to put some of my time off work to good use and decided to get busy with the spray cans. And here\'s the result.....

Gonna give it a good vac & valet the seats tomorrow.
Just need to get a new centre vent to tidy it up properly, though.
Gonna get a pillar pod soon, so I can move the boost guage, too.
Looks very nice mate! Good job!
Looking good, but doesnt that pipework for the boost gauge get in the way?
Fish
Dash looks SUPERB but WTF is that boost gauge all about, that looks terrible !!
I know. That\'s how it was when I got it. But I haven\'t changed anything cuz I\'m gonna put it in a pillar pod & then all the piping & wiring will be hidden away properly.
Looks really well in smoked silver, good job! Do you know the name of the colour you used? I\'m planning on undertaking the same job in the near future, did you use clear laquer on top?
CJ
I used Rover Gunmetal (the only time I\'ll have anything associated with Rover :rollin )
I used a clear plastic primer, then a few coats of regular grey primer, 4 coats of colour & 2 coats of clear laquer to finish it off.
Hardest part is sanding the rubbery coating off, but it\'s all worth it in the end.
noooooo i was gonna do mine rover gunmetal....i even got the paint!!!! Damn you!!!
Naaah..you\'re both copycats i tell ya :wiggle looks identical to mine except mine is vauxhall steel grey and looks an identical colour to the rover colour..good job mate :cool
:( Looks like ill have to choose another colour....would white be too much of an eyesore (white car)....
Good job by the way mate!
seriously i think this shade of colour looks best. I cant see what the problem is..so what if he has painted it the same as what you were going to, he has the same car, so are you gonna get something else??:Giggle I think white will look sh!te. The only 2 colours i like best for this job is gunmetal grey or gloss black.
hmmm....i do see wat you are saying....i dont want anything garish like red....hence why i chose gunmetal....yeah i may as well spray it gunmetal...
How many coats of lacquer did you both use? I was looking at using 2 coats of filler primer, 4 coats of colour and 4 lacquer....is that enough?
Blody hell is that the time...yawn...im knackered lol!
i did about 6 coats of grey plastic acrylic primer, 4 coats of steel grey and no laquer. I did\'nt laquer it because i did\'nt want the shine affect, also with past experience laquer tends to crack, peel and tarnish into a nicotine color after time just like the rubbery coating on the early fd\'s
also if your gonna do your own, then dont paint the instrument binaccle otherwise it will reflect like a biatch

Dont use white, the glare will be awful on your eyes on a long journey.. :cool
looks good mate, thats what colour i\'ve just done mine.
Looks well nice in gun metal :)
Looks nice!
How did you key the plastic for paint? Just sanded?
How did you remove the dash? :)
Ta, Paul.
I did a hell of a lot of sanding. Had to get that rubbery coating off, so it took some time.
Dash wasn\'t too hard to remove. A couple of choice swear words and it was out! :rollin
I followed these instructions that Archbish posted ages ago after doing a search for "Dash Removal"...... http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showpost.php?p=75152&postcount=2 (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showpost.php?p=75152&postcount=2)

Is the rubbery coating on all FD dashs? Mine (95) just looks and feels like standard tacky Jap plastic...
CJ
I believe it was something like 92-94, so you should be o.k. Just use some very fine wet & dry paper to remove any cleaning products & key it a little & you should be fine.
The rubberey coating is only on the early fd\'s. I think in 1994 on they stopped it and just used tacky textured looking plastic which your on about.
Hmmm. If it\'s textured, you\'ll probably need to sand it to a smooth finish. Although should still be fairly easy, just use 3 stages of wet & dry paper.
Blimey, didn\'t you fancy mazda silver ??? Looking very nice :p

Cool - almost done removing stuff to sand. One problem though - how did you remove the plastic driver side door cover, i can\'t figure it out and don\'t want to snap anything?
Cheers, Paul.
looks good m8 same colour as mine

Pretty easy, really. There\'s 3 screws around the edges of the door trim. Then you just need to pop out the screw cover inside the door handle & take the screw out of there, take the off 2 triangular covers above the panel (they just pop out). Then just lift the door panel upwards. All the screws that hold the part you wanna spray are on the rear of the door panel, so it\'s all plain sailing from there.
Super job there, love the colour and livens up the interior. I plan on doing mine too but having had the car off the road for about 3 weeks while I did the rats nest job I dont wanna rush and do this, just wanna drive it.
Quick question though, when you have rubbed it all down and resprayed it, will it scratch again or have you removed the rubbery coating ?
Quote from: gmogleQuick question though, when you have rubbed it all down and resprayed it, will it scratch again or have you removed the rubbery coating ?
you will need to take off all the rubbery coating or the paint will react and you will need to start again. plenty of laquer as well :cool
Yup. The rubbery coating takes some sanding to get off, but it\'s all worth it in the end. To avoid scratching, you wanna do 4 or 5 coats of colour and then 2 or 3 coats of laquer.
The main thing is not rushing it. It\'s always tempting to get all the coats of paint on as soon as possible, but it\'s worth taking time between coats for a better result.
Just started to spray mine now, but i\'m wondering whether or not to do the instrument binacle as ppl say it\'ll reflect onto the windscreen and distract from the road.
However, if i don\'t spray it, wont it look daft against the other painted parts?Anyone got a picture of an FD done this way?
Ta, Paul.
I didn\'t spray the shroud on mine. Simply because I\'ve heard it mentioned quite a few times about reflecting on the windscreen. It looks fine though. All the rest of the dash is black anyway, so it doesn\'t look out of place.

Good to hear! Got a piccy? :)
Ta, Paul.
edit: duh, i see you started the thread in the first place! Hmmm, i think i see the confusion - i thought ppl were talking about not spraying the whole instrument section, and you\'re talking about the steering wheel shroud?
No, no. I think I\'m on about the same part as you. The instrument shroud/hood. Just ran out & took a couple of pics on my phone for you......

Ahhh! I see - that still looks great!
Ta for the piccy!
Cheers, Paul.
No worries. Be sure to post pics when you\'re done.
I actually took pics through all the stages of painting, so might actually put something together with them all on as a sort of guide for those who still want to do it. Although it might be a bit boring just looking at some items standard, sanded, primered, top coat! :Giggle
like this one mmmmm quite dull thats why i left them off my thread
For anyone wondering, this is quite a big job. Getting the bits out of the car is the easy part, then you\'ve got to disassemble them further, separating all the dials from the plasic, *sand* them down. Take bloody ages.
So far its taken me half of saturday and most of sunday and i\'ve still got the instrument binnacle to do! :)
Cheers, Paul.
it does take a while. It took me a couple of days to do mine.If your standing around waiting for paint to dry or whatever, find other little bits to spray such as the rear strut brace, glovebox handle, center vent etc.. It is also worth taking the drivers side window switch apart and painting that..looks much better and is really easy.
