Title: intake temps
Post by: vxer on May 23, 2006, 07:53:11 PM
Hi there,

After fitting my PFC I can actually see my intake temps. Suffice to say, i\'m not impressed! They\'re around 40 degrees C after some reasonably hard road driving, and i\'ve seen 45.

I have the standard air box, and recently changed the filter for a K&N whilest retaining the stock airbox, but it made no difference.

What kind of air temps are you guys seeing on what setup?

Cheers, Paul.

Its not the airbox causing the problem, look at your (small) intercooler!

40-45c after fairly hard driving isnt that bad. With the stock rad/IC I saw temps going up into the 80\'s and 90\'s.

Depends alot on the front of your rx7 too, as if you have a decent nose the amount of air getting through will differ from car to car, also bigger intercooler or v-mount will obviously make a difference. Dont know what your car looks like so cant comment too much at mo  :D

Wow, ok... So, anything you can do without changing the stock intercooler?

TBH paul it will be a good idea to change it if you  wish to mod the car further. Take it easy when the temps rocket coz it will spell rotary Doom....... Nice white car like that need a FMIC.... shaunwill has a c west nose. he says it droped his temps no end.

If i\'m going to change the intercooler, i\'ll go for a charge cooler i think - should be much much more efficient for the size...

Just wondered if there was anything i could do to drop to say 30 degrees, instead of 40, then i\'d be happier!

Mine has a FMIC nice big aluminium rad and the c-west front nose, on the way back from work yesterday morning 13oC intake temps, on m-way in summer heat 27oC

I think as others have said if you are seeing 40-45oC driving hard it is ok but to lower them you need to upgrade a few things, the other option is water injection which is probably the cheapest option approx £400 install  ;)

My vote goes to water injection aswell, seems to be the way forward from what I can tell without all the hassle etc changing to an expensive FMIC.

TBH the reading from the air temp sensor is prone to heat soak as it is placed underneath the plenum. Most guys move this to the elbow where a more accurate reading of the air temp can be had. This stops false readings from heat soak when stuck in traffic.

Best mod in my opinion would be FMIC & WI.

Seems a little bit of a \'cheat\' to me; what happens when you run out of water?  :)

Cheers, Paul.

mmm, like that idea of moving the sensor.  Mine seems fine until I leave the car standing, then it rockets and never seems to settle down again.  And I have a lot of cooling - FMIC, Scoot Bonnet (loads of vents :cool ) and the RE-A bumper with the extra vent in it.

Mark - Same as what happens to mine at the moment, but after driving at a steady speed (say 50mph) for a couple of minutes they shoot right back down for me.

If I was to drive my car from cold and not get stuck in traffic and cruise till i got the car warmed up for WOT my temps will not go past 25 degrees which would indicate to me that my FMIC is doing a good job of keeping my intake temps cool!!  :cool

Erm, put more in? Thats like asking what happens when you run out of fuel  :Hammer

Mine does after a while, but not quite to the low level it was before.  Its when your waiting in line at the strip and its reading 45+ because of the soak   :Hammer

That\'s when WI comes in handy cos as soon as you are on boost and the water kicks in your temps come right down to normal ambient temps!!  :cool

Not really. If you have your car mapped for water injection and you run out of water, you will start to detonate = bad.

Ta, Paul.

edit: duh, run out of water not fuel!

This could argue all day over that coment. If you are paranoid about running out make some fail safes. Water injection with out propper tuning is a waste of power. I use a FMIC and Alch injection i can get my throttle body and plenim cold to touch. The only other way forward for me is no intercooler at all
