Title: Calling all mechanics (Non RX)
Post by: allstaruk on May 23, 2006, 03:15:27 PM
Hi

I have been trying to get a peugoet 106 running that I was given and I am well and truely stuck, it runs but is very underpowered and doesn\'t seem to rev as high as it should. I put a strobe on it and and the spark is very erratic.

I have checked the;

Plugs
Leads
Electronic Distributor
Crankshaft sensor

and they are all fine,

If and one has any ideas from the reidiculous to the sensble can you post them up as I have run out of things to test.

Please Help

Alan

Hit It With A Hammer And Call It A FRog, If That Dont Work Then Your Fducked

I\'ve kicked it, not quite got to the hammer stage although there is a skip on the other side of the rd I\'m tempted to get a few mates to help me lift it in.

an erratic spark don\'t sound too good, somethings not right there.
have you checked fuel, injectors (or carb) air filter isn\'t blocked.
can you turn the engine over by hand (with the plugs in) as low compression will give poor power
other than that i\'d be in the same boat as you - stumped

when you say it doesn\'t seem to rev very high - does it misfire or just run out of puff?

is it kangarooing when driving? Head gasket?

It drives quite smoothly when it runs just very underpowered its very unstable at idle though.

Its not the head gasket as I\'ve compression tested it.

I\'ve had similar experiences before (car runs fine but no top end, rough idle) and they were down to misaligned cam belts. On my old mazda 121 the belt was out by 2 teeth.. once it was fixed it was fine. It would be worth checking (assuming it\'s got a cam belt!)

mmmm cam timing sounds a possibility
ignition to far advanced or to far retarded? this would also give poor power, unwillingness to rev out at the top end

I thought is was the cam belt initially, but according to the haynes manual it is lined up, atleast you can lock the flywheel and camshaft into the correct timing holes in the block.

The ignitinon is adjusted by the ecu and it advances and retards just fine, I\'ve checked this with a strobe light so I know itw working.

We bought a Saxo 1.1i when they first came out. In its old age ( OK, about 5 years old) it started misbehaving. It turned out that the vacuum pipe between the manifold and the hot air diverter flap thingy on the airfilter was broken.

I can\'t see any problems with the pipes on the throttlebody but even so that wouldn\'t cause the erratic spark.

Is the erratic spark just because its lumpy at idle or is it erratic across the range?
Faulty knock sensor?
Is it in limp home mode. Try the old disconnect the battery overnight urban mith trick.
Its not the old clogged air filter? Seen that cause your symptoms. Try without for a few miles. might be coked up.
Do a compression check. If a valves bent or sticky you will have similar symptoms.
Erratic spark sounds most likely. You need a donor car to swap some things out with.
Good luck!

The erratic spark is accross the range, and its not in limp home mode neither is the ecu showing any fault codes, the air filter is clean and a compression test has proved the engine is fine, I have a donor car as my mums has the same engine.

I\'ve swapped;

Electronic Distributor unit
Crankshaft Sensor
Water Temp Sensor
Water Temp Switch

The plugs are brand new and the gap has been checked.

I have also used a meter and buzzed throught all the sensors to the ecu connector to make sure the wires are still intact.

you checked the coil?? i\'ve seen similar probs on non elec dizzys & it was the condensor.
Bad earth somewhere?
Blocked fuel filter wouldnt help.

maybe the problem was why it was given away to you? the previous owners might be able to shed some light on the problem

It was given to me because it wouldn\'t start and he couldn\'t be bothered to pay tohave it fixed, the coil is part of the electric dizzy and I have swapped this out and it makes no difference.

I can\'t find a bad earth but that doesn\'t mean there is one.

Haven\'t looked at the fuel system really as that would have nothing to do with an erratic spark.

Bit of a trek mate I\'m in farnham just the other side of guildford.

I thought it was the throttle position sensor at first and I tested it and it it did have a dead spot so I have changed it for a working one, so it shouldn\'t be that.
