Title: welding?
Post by: ATD on May 22, 2006, 01:53:43 PM
Hi there

I need your advice guys.

My car has recently been subject to an engine boil! The mechanic fixing it for me has had sections of the middle and end cap welded as he couldnt find replacements. Is welding these parts normal procedure and will it withstand the stress?

Also does anyone know were I can buy an upgraded seal and tips kit from?

Many Thanks

I have a pic if it helps. Mail me on andrewheaney@fromadistance.co.uk so I can forward it to you, as I dont know to put it up here.

Im not 100% sure but done properly i dont see why a rotary engine cannot be welded, piston engines can be repaired in this way so i would have thought a rotary would...

Sacked this off as a bad idea. Bought engine with 20,000 miles on with 6 month guarantee. Be back on the road next week, hopefully.

Yeah, I\'m thick, then!   I wonder if my petrol cap needs welding?  Mind you, could be the valve caps, but mine are plastic - (plastic welding maybe?) or, the oil cap, or...radiator cap.......

is it a cap you wear on your head?

or maybe its an electronic cap, like capacitor?

I cant think of any other caps on this car.... but then I dont know much either, sooo...

its me, then.

I am thick!

Hi Martin
What Andrew is talking about are the middle and end plates.
His have worn aroung the seal and was going to have missing metal welded back on, like a filler.
Good question, badly expressed.
I wou;d be curious to know though.
If you used weld as a filler, as its a different material from the cast plates would it cause a problem with movement? It would also have to be nitrated?

Thanks Gary.

I was not comfortable with welding the \'plates\'!

Second hand engine with 20,000 miles on its way!

oh, Plates !!! You mean the side housings !!  The mechanic must be ****e, because you CAN get new ones from Mazda. Mind you, the post just says "my car", we have no idea what model, or what engine. Maybe its an R-100 !!!
