Title: My rotary engine project
Post by: jamie_eaton on May 22, 2006, 10:08:37 AM
Hello guys i could do with some help here as i am coming close to my deadline.
I have been studying materials science for 4 years now as part of my job only 5 weeks left, thank god!!.
Wewas all given a project, since i thought i was going to be off from work for 3 months due to an operation i thought i could work from home, so i decided to do my project on the rotary engine.
The aspects i have to cover is the mettalurgical side of it, for example i am writing on the shell moulding and gas carburising process of the rotor housings.
Is there any other information out there, or does any one know where these housings are made?.
any help will be greatly appreciated!, thanks J

sounds like a toughy mate. What do you need to know? Manufacturing processes? material properties? TBH my knowledge is limited......

yeah its mainly information on the process of how the engine housing is made, and why that process is used, im begining to regret using this as my project as it is getting a little difficult.
i think i only have 2 weeks for it to be finished and handed in aswell!!

Basicly the Housings are cast Alloy then the Inside is coated in a type of chrome.

its a sheet metal insert thats cast in place when they make the housing they have a fancy acronym for it I think its SAW (sheetmetal insert somthing somthing LoL)

I\'ve seen some photos of a polished and acid etched housing and you can clearly see the saw toothed pattern where the sheet metal insert meets the rest of the casting.

The Chrome coating has alos got a lot of microscopic pores in it so it holds oil better.

I am fairly certain that mazda published a load of papers on alternative housing coatings around the time they were competing in Lemans as the 26B had cermet coating on the housings. (not the same stuff that those guys in america are recoating with apparently ... contrary to thier claims!!)

I don\'t know who the papers were published under ... probably the SAE, but it\'s also worth having a look at ASME as well

Hmm, shell moulding is probabaly referring to the casting process for the main bit of the housing, take a goole on investment casting or lost wax casting.
