Title: HELP PLEASE - Fresh Rebuild water in the oil
Post by: ccd9aci on May 20, 2006, 06:45:36 PM
Hi

Any help would be greatly appreciated

We have just done a fresh rebuild and have just put the engine back in the car.  We were filing up the radiator and the coolant is flowing out of the sump.

Any ideas??

Sorry wrong area - have reposted in correct one

I\'m sure this is a stupid suggestion, but have you checked the coolant plug just above the sump (passenger side) is in place?

yeah - I know it sounds stupid but it\'s more a case of somehow we\'ve managed to link the oil and water systems together.

Everything is connected outside the car the water is actually coming out of the sump.

It\'s sound  like "o" rings missing( 2  flat rings which mate between rotor housing/iron with 2 dowels .
Think hard! did you put it or not??

definitley put them in, and all the water jacket o rings - this is the second rebuild that we\'ve done, the first one was a Gen 3 though so the hoses are all different on this one

when we emptied the oil it wasnt like there was a bit of water in the sump, the sump was literally full of water and when you fill the radiator the water runs out of the sump like a direct feed so i don\'t think it\'s a o ring problem - thanks for the suggestion though

Cheers TRex I wish it was that simple

I\'m guessing that we must have put a water hose onto either on oil hose or an air hose - just cant think where we would have done it.  We\'ve thought about the o rings and the water jacket o rings but can\'t see how they would be letting that much water through - especially when we havent started it yet and it\'s not under pressure.  I\'m guessing we cant have put it on an oil hose - as they all have screw threads to fix them so we must have muddled an air hose with a water hose somewhere just not sure where there are two close together that we\'ve screwed up.

I presume you removed the Turbo oil and waters off the engine rather than off the Turbo its self? Possable to get them confused i supose??

also check you\'ve not conected any of the smaller Breather hoses onto any of the smaller water hose fittings.

How dramatic is it?? is it like pouring the water down the Oil filler?? or is it more gradual over time??

I can\'t see it being a Inner water seal?? but its possabe it could be an Outer thats moved when you\'ve assembled the engine, What did you use to hold the water seals in place?

If you think about it there is not many direct routes from the water to oil? I take it the Engine is in the car and built back up?? is it possable to remove the sump with it in situe? if so Have a look from where it comes from?? if it comes from between the plates and Housings its a dodgy Water seal if its from a Breather hole then you\'ve conected a pipe up wrong, from the Oil pump or oil return i\'d guess its the Turbo plumbed in wrong??

Cheers for all your help and suggestions.  Ripped the engine out again and the water was coming in through the water jacket gasket.  It was the front housing, so clamped the others together so didnt have to strip it all down again thank godness.  The O ring was severed.  Got it all back together again now after replacing the O ring and everything is running sweet.

Nice one!!! ;)

The water seal is quite easy to displace if you don\'t well stick them in, At least your all sorted now without any Major issues.

Well done. At least you didnt try and start it, that would have been a disaster. Did you put vaseline on those seals?  It helps keep them in place when you put the housings together.
