Title: starter
Post by: edward4 on October 26, 2003, 12:45:22 PM
Hi Y\'all!

Plaese help quick.
Just got back from a week in Gran Canaria, shit weather for over there but had loads of fun driving up the mountainous interior in a 1200cc clio. wishing I was in my FD all the way. Anyway tried to start my baby this morning. All I got was a whirring sound as if the starter is not engaging. All other electics seem fine. So, changed the battery thinking that it may be run down, same thing happened. Put the car in gear and turned key to see if the starter was engaging and the car moved on the starter indicating that it was engaged. But when I try i in neutral I get the same old noise.

Before I left for the week the car was fine. Only dodgy factor is that I asked my daughter to move the car a matter of feet while I was away.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong, would drag starting hurt?

Or suggest an electrician who knows whats what in north London, Essex.

hi

it sounds like you car is flooded. when rx-7\'s are moved or run for a short time i.e <5 mins they can flood, which means they wont start, which your niebour has done.

goto the sticky at the top of this section and it will tell you what to do.

hope this helps:D

Cheers for the reply richrx.
Yes there was a flood issue. because I tried to start the car several times it did have excess fuel in the engine. This was patently obvious when I got the missus to drag me down the street with her volvo.
Clouds of smoke and many nieghbours looking on tut-tutting. However, the car started immediately. Drove it for about 20 miles not really knowing what to expect, but it drove fine. returned home and gingerly switched off the ignition hoping that I\'d put extra zip back in the battery. Tried to start again.
This time nothing, no dash lights, nothing. Opened the bonnet and guess what?
The wacky looking clamp was completly off the positive battery terminal.
Dohh!
I gently tapped it on securely using a small piece of wood as a drift and a light spanner as the hammer. The clamp now securely on, I turn the key and Vroom! I\'m in business again.

So! to cut a long story short, check your battery terminals are secure.
Cheers and happy motoring
