Title: Worth getting rid of the air pump??
Post by: gavink on May 19, 2006, 11:46:09 AM
Hi all..

Im at the stage with my FD that i need to book it in to get it mapped..Now ive removed the aircon compressor (and rad etc) and fitted the smaller belt but what i want to know is,is it worth removing the airpump and fitting the pully kit?
What are the benefits of taking the pump off?.Is it worth the £200 it would cost me to get the parts to do this?

I was in a similar position 18 months ago and thought "sod it", why pay £100,00+ for the pulley kit.  I just unplugged the airpump prior to having the PFC re-mapped by WGT to stop the silly mooing noise below 3000rpm.  You only really have to remove the airpump when you go single in my opinion.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Jon

Took my pump off and fitted a small belt. Took a while but I think it is 663 or 675mm long. Its running the water pump at less than standard tension with the standard pulleys. Works when wet also.
Ignore the hype and just buy a belt for £3. With the pump out the way you can route the intercooling pipework straight to the front and remove the plastic flatened pipe. (I used a samco Ø70 -90° bend).

It saves weight (10kg??) and inertia on the crank and friction on the belt. All good stuff.

Well there is\'nt any big advantage to removing it unless your having problems with it.

You don\'t realy want to take it off whilst your running a Cat as the air pump helps stop the cat from getting clogged as well as helping emitions.

I found when i first removed mine it effected the Idle a bit but this was soon sorted out when i fitted a PFC.

The Only real advantage is the Space it creates when you take it off, you get a bit more air round the Turbo\'s which can\'t be a bad thing. Its not realy heavy so its not a big weight reduction????

if you don\'t have a cat there is no need for it.... also its then an excuse for getting some new shiny pullies  :D
