Hello again, as some of you know I\'m still quite new to this forum and after recently buying a 3rd generation I was just wondering when I\'m likely to need a rebuild? The cars done 68k miles and I have tried to search for this but couldnt find anything directly relating to this question.
Also is it generally best to get the rebuild done before the engine goes properly or just wait till it goes bang?
Apologies if I sound a bit of a dik but I will confess I know jack s*ite when it comes to rotaries...
Anyway, thanks again for any advice you can offer
68k is well into rebuild mileage. Are you sure it hasnt been rebuilt? A compression test would help great deal to see if all is ok.
With regards to your second question it is best to get rebuilt before it goes "Bang". I found out the hard way when it did.
rebuilds @ 60k can be a bit of a myth although some members may disagree (some engines have gone pop after only a few thousand miles, mainly down to poor set up after a rebuild)
It all depends on previous servicing, how much abuse its had, what boost its been running at etc etc etc.
you\'ll see some from the USA racking over 120k before the need of a rebuild.
Best advice is a compression test on the rotor chambers and coolant pressure test. its not that expensive.
If you are rebuilding get some porting done, better to do it now rather than 6months down the line (you\'ll wish you had)
Ah yeh I heard its good to do the porting when its getting rebuilt - whats the way to go on the porting side? Shes also running on an hks racing suction kit at the moment - if that effects anything port wise? Tests have been done already and from what ive been told she is running decent enough - its in with a boost problem at the moment, a few hoses have perished and a solenoid diaphragm went on one of the turbos, but apart from that she is still running very well. I can get a rebuild done now for around £1800 all in or wait till it goes pop and im looking at the 3k mark, so its quite a difference. Think I will have to run her round for a few more k, then do it before she goes bang and once I\'m not quite as skint...!
If the car has been maintained 80k+ is not an issue, The main problem with these babies is regular maintenance and TLC, if that has not been done expect an early demise :(
If you have boost leaks ect from perrished pipes the car is getting to the age where bits start to die off.
My advice would be if you can afford it and you intend keeping her go for the rebuild now AND make sure who ever is doing the build uses good bits, cheap rebuilds are good if they are done with the right bits and not lots of second hand parts that will only last a few thousand miles. Expect a full gasket set, new apex seals, ect ect ask the questions first and if you do not know the builder get him to put it into a quote stating what he includes in the price, that way there will be no arguments if things do go wrong. [sounds like I am having a go at builders, I\'m not honest, just seen to many hard done by stories]
Porting ect should be talked about at the same time as the rebuild, all these upgrades are dependant on weather you want extra power and how much.
