Title: Gauges
Post by: D1 WTF on May 18, 2006, 01:35:42 AM
i have completely standard gauges in my rex.  nothing after market at all.

What gauges do you think are necessary?, what gauges do you think it is good/advisable to have?

how easy is it to install after market gauges?( in the sense of wiring and plumbing)/ is it best left to the professionals  :2Rolleyes ?

also where do you think the best place to mount them is.  i want it to be neat and tidy.  you know, like factory fit type thing.  what have you done etc?

i quite like it when three gauges are mounted in the pannel above the glove box how is this done?

cheers   sam

This may help Sam, the standard temp guage only gives a reading when it\'s too late!

Water Temp cos the standard one is heavily centred biased.
Oil Pressure cos the standard one is crap!
Boost cos there isnt one and you wont know if you get boost creep!
Oil Temp so I know roughly whens a good time to give it the boot!

Those are what i am installing this weekend...

Water temp should be relaitvely easy...im doing the same as the how-to posted by bob....except im just going to remove the stat housing to drill/tap it.

Boost is really easy, should come straight off your map sensor?

Youll neeed some form of sandwich plate for the oil pressure gauge, on my teg i just put it on the oil filter thread...

at the mo im running

1 - Boost
2 - Oil Temp ( need plumbing in but the gauge is in )
3 - Oil Pressure ( need plumbing in but the gauge is in )
4 - Water Temp
5 - AFR
6 - Volts

that tells me pretty much what i need to know :D

although a wideband and EGT gauges would be very nice :D

just as reliable i think, plus i think a little more reliable. I have boost, water, oil pressure and exhaust temp gauges in the car. The only ones i look at is exhaust temp and oil pressure. Use the apexi to monitor the rest

i have an FC so i have

1 - boost - this ontop of the dash
2 - afr and volts - in the top heater vent
3 - oil temp and oil pressure and water temp under the radio

its not looking tooo bad now :)

once i go microtech - i can prob get shut of some of them :D

i would like the EGT really - but they are a bit on the ££££ side and then i would need somewhere to put it ??

Got Defi oil temp/boost as they are important to see clearly.
As mentioned The Apexi commander can show all of those mentioned-but it not very clear if bright sun etc-i wish they developed one with better luminensce quality!!

I have Defi Boost and Water Temp :) Nice, and they can dim when you switch the lights on so they\'re not in your face on an A-pillar mount.

I\'ve got: Boost in an RE:A steering columb pod and going to be fitting a water temp and oil pressure gauge in a custom pod (soon to be available with Gary from rotary art!!) which sits above the tweeter catral on top of the dash!!!

Do all the defi gauges need the link control unit to work or can you get one\'s which dont need it? If so where can you get these from?
