Title: Weird turbo prob
Post by: chopper on May 14, 2006, 07:19:11 PM
As some of you know ive been having a strange (sometimes) boosting second turbo

It works sometimes, and sometimes it doesnt - like driving an NA when it doesnt :(

Well today i gave the car its first big run whilst in my possession, and found that when the second turbo does work it feels like its spooling, then not spooling then spooling again - really not smooth at all.

And when it doesnt work, when you come off the gas you can hear an very audilbe boooooooooooo noise - sorry cant describe it any better - its like a BOV, but instead of a woosh, its a low down wooooooooooooo sound.

Sometimes the turbo rips your arms off - like it should.

I really dont feel its a turbo gone bang, or falling apart - but i could be wrong. Could excessive play on the second turbo be causing this to happen ??

Any ideas would be greeatfully accepted. Ive just brought her, and when i got destroy from 60mph by a Seat Cupra R is was devestated

Cheers - MIke

The joys of twins, for the first issue loosing the secondary sounds like the flap on your wastegate is loose or the solenoids for wg control or a vac pipe inbetween. The wg controls the secondary turbo boost levels by venting off excess pressure so if it's on/off its sounds like one of the above.

For the second issue, with both primary and secondary then I would say a boost leak but deffo a problem with the primary. If the primary turbo doesn't get to 8psi then the sequential system cannot operate hence low boost to the secondary. Need to get a solid 10psi to the primary to even start looking at secondary issues.

Boost gauge and pattern is a good guide.

Sorry forgot to say i sometimes get 10-8-9 but sometimes its 6 on both. Oor maybe 10 psi then 6 on seccond. I know its not the turbos because there new with a rebuil engine 3 months ago.
