Title: New and need some info
Post by: chopper on May 12, 2006, 10:54:09 AM
Hi all im new on here - some of you may know me from UJCC and such. Basically ive been on a quest to find MY ultimate jap car - on the way ive had R32 GTR, couple of 300zx\'s, scoobies, ITR\'s etc - but i think ive found it with the fd3s

I dont know much about them other than the usual avaid flooding etc - but ive got a J plate Black TT. I dont know if its a type R, RB etc - wouldnt mind knowing how i find out.

Also the engine has had a recent rebuild (including all new air lines, fuel pipes etc) by Dragon Performance - (think it was late last year) it seems great in first gear but in second etc (when you floor it) it doesnt seem to pick up anywhere near as good as other cars ive had. Almost like the second turbo doesnt really give full potential. It may just be me as im not used to them

Its running apexi filters, blitz BOV, decat, and a VERY loud exhaust. Fuel consumption is hillarious but im not bothered about that. Everything else appears stock

So any info welcome :

What oil does it take? (diff and engine) - i heard they use alot
Any special coolant?
Whats the service intervals ?
Whats the model differences?
Im a bit skint now but ive heard power fc and mapping is the way to go to improve fuel consumption and performance ??

Like i say im a newbie to the car - but im absolutely loving it and wish id brought one years ago.

Thanks in advance - Mike

hey and welcome
have you got a boost gauge on there? if so whats the boost reading on your second turbo, because on the standard set up you should feel it pull hard on the second tub

as for servicing i change my oil every 3k
spark plugs will be every 6k
coolant i think green is ok (but will be put right)
as for oil there are many different opions but i use 10-40 gtx
now for model, have you got 2 oil coolers?
leather seats?
sunroof?
its most likely a type r or r2

welcome!
sounds like the second turbo isn\'t kicking in. You should feel a definite step up in power at 4,500rpm.. it would probably be worth taking it to your nearest rotary god (which I guess would be dragon for you?)
cheers

Hi welcome, make sure you only use mineral oil (like the gtx 10w 40 mentioned above) as synthetic stuff can cause problems i think.
Some people seem to have engines that do gobble oil and then some people don\'t need to top up at all between changes (3k miles) so just keep an eye on your dipstick and you\'ll be fine. If it is really drinking loads oil then ther\'s probably something wrong with it, massive oil consumption isn\'t really a natural trait of rotaries. :)

A Power fc is a very very sensible mod, it will increase your performance, and it will improve your fuel consumption too, but by that i mean your engine will easily consume huge amounts of fuel much more easily! lol!

I think I speak for most people when i say \'PICTURES PLEASE!\'

:)

Hi there and welcome to the club, you\'ve made a good choice in car. As the others have said it sounds like the turbos aren\'t boosting correctly, at 4,500rpm there should be a slight calm moment before the 2nd kicks in, it is very noticable. Taking it along to Dragon would probably be a good idea as they will be able to diagnose a problem quickly (could be just a hose that has blown off).
Definately recommend the Apexi pfc as it will help you gain some more power and will keep your engine within a safety zone to stop it detonating (you definately don\'t want to be paying for another rebuild).

As for the type you have let us see some photos and a bit more of the spec (age, what electrical goodies it has, twin oil coolers etc) and someone on here will be able to tell you I\'m sure.

All the best with it

Barry

So does type R mean lighter weight ? Like with the WRX. Or is it just a stock model code ?

Sorry about all the questions - and thanks for all you welcomes and replies

Also, i have been told to disconnect the air pump (the idle clutch driven one) as it takes air away from the induction. Principal sounds good. What about re routing it back infrom of the induction and reconecting it - so it runs all the time like a mini super charger ? Or is this a BAD idea

the air pump really only is there to precharge the CAT it will be puttin a resistance on the drive but its negliable, ive got rid of mine as its now a single tub and more space etc etc
