Title: Turbo conversion - why?
Post by: Dr Gonzo on October 24, 2003, 08:57:09 AM
Ignorant newbie question....

I\'ve seen quite a few twin turbo gen 3\'s converted to a single so using my massive powers of deduction I\'m guessing there\'s a good reason for it!

Could anyone let me know what it is?

Thanks!

Richard

A number of reasons

1. Duals are a pain to up the power on
2. As they get older all the solenoids and stuff make them difficult to maintain.
3. A big shiny single gives great W**k value and is needed if you want over a certain power (say 350HP or so).

What you loose is the instant boost with duals that is so renowned for putting 3rd gens in the ditch in the wet at low speed and exchange it for a kick up the rear at the 4000RPM mark that still puts you in the ditch, but a bit further round the corner.

If you want I could start talking compressors graphs and relative efficiencies, but its friday :-)
