Title: clutch slipping but why?
Post by: richard cash on May 10, 2006, 10:57:49 PM
i tried launching my car today for the first time since being mapped. It had a brand new 6puck clutch from rx motors when they did the rebuild and its got an ACT extreme pressure plate and lightened flywheel.

The car just revved the bollocks off it but only went forward slowly, i just thought it maxed 1st as it did move, so i shifted into 2nd and it did the same thing. I had to take foot off accelerator and let revs stabalise then move off. If i just put my foot down from a rolling start then there is no problems in any gear.

is this the clutch slipping, actually since writing this i just thought it may be the wheels lighting up, could this be the case. Its about 460BHP single turbo but the wheels are newish 275\'s and the road was warm from being baked by the sun all day. Surely theres not that much power to spin the wheels in 2nd, it must be the clutch but why doesnt it happen when im driving and only at launch.

well lots of power and lots of grip which means its going to find the weakest link, Also may not have beded in properly??

This is going to sound dumb but did you take your foot off the peddle??

Different launch skills will make the clutch work diffferently.

Could also be getting too hot, Bit like brake fade.

you were probably launching with tooo high revs and spinning the wheels, sometimes you can be unaware you are spinning ur wheels, have a mate watch next time outside  when u try and launch.
I have the same clutch setup as you, with road tyres 3500 revs is about the limit to have a good launch take off any higher I just sit there spinning my wheels like an idiot in all three gears and not moving.

If it is slipping the clutch disc might have been put in the wrong way round so the pressure plate is not puttin enough pressure against the disc and flywheel, this has happened loads of times in different cars I have heard.

I have done 10000 miles with my ACT clutch setup with loads of drag  launches and it hasnt slipped once with my power

i think i was launching with about 5K revs like i used to in my MR2 tubby but im guessing thats too high from what your saying, lol. I just chose around that figure as i just thought it would be best to launch with a decent amount of boost. I was up against an evo RS, those lightweight ones and it had about 310brake so wanted to launch good, ****ed it up twice though and he slaughtered me. Onto the dual carridgeway he didnt have a chance when i popped it into 3rd and then 4th but his acceleration from 0-60 was blistering
